Leslie,

I just looked at one of the photos. The shutter speed is 1/8, way to slow to
stop action, and you had the camera at ISO 1600, f2.8.

So to actually get the speed up enough to stop action, you will probably need
one of the newer cameras that will go to ISO 6400 and a f1.8 or f1.4 lens.

It is a very good lens for low light and a bargain as well.
Get it. You'll (Yule) not regret it.

Here are two of the pix I did with no flash with a 28-75mm F 2.8 lens.

notice how the hands are blurred? I hand my hand propped up on a table when
I took these so i don't think it has anything to do with me moving while
taking the pix or anything. I'm just not sure what to do to get clear shots
with no flash in a nightclub show.

Most of the time the pictures take with no flash will take on a red look and
some part of the picture will be blurred. Like the guitarist hand will be
blurred out but the rest of him will look ok. I will have to post some
pictures to show you.

Leslie, I agree with the others, it's hard to beat and the price is low, so low
I doubt if it can be rented

Looks good Ed but do I have to look like something out of an online game to wear
it? I confess I'd love to afford a Thinktank belt, it gives some weather
protection. However I'm not proud so if you want to send me some I won't be
hurt! Better forget the Browning ;-)

I agree with Scott and I use this 50mm 1.8 in the situation with low light
eversince, and it worked well

Yes. Especially if you only have kit lenses. Instead of renting one though the
50 f1.8 only costs about $100. Why not buy one, they are about the least
expensive lens available.

I'd be interested to know what troubles you've been having? I did
pretty well at a shutter speed of 1/100 and iso 400 and 800 halloween
night .Both indoors and out.

I have a question on this lens. I was looking at renting this very lens for
a NYE club show my husband's band is having. Would this be a good lens to
use if I am not going to use a flash? A lot of bands do not want flash and I
just cannot seem to get my D50 to take good low light pictures with no
flash. I like to capture the stage light rather than the washed out flash
look I often get and I am not sure if I need a new camera with a much
higher ISO or if it is a lens issue.

Hi Tony,

I just Googled them. One site that popped up (Overstock dot com) has a
650-2600 mm zoom listed at $245.
-for-Nikon/3366452/product.html>

Try clicking on the illustration photo for that lens and note the
photographic quality (or lack thereof) in their catalog photo. I could
be misguided, but my hunch is that image may be similar to the quality
you should expect from the lens. On a Pentax forum I found comments
about using one of their lenses for target practice, and another about
one of their lenses with the aperture leaves being "oily".

The request went in as soon as I got home from the trip with you to th erange.
The D50 acted up a little, for the first time, and it has close to 50000 shutter
activations, so is due for replacement. Now just waiting to see if I get enough
to actually go get one.

Dear Santa,

This is all I want for Christmas...human operator not included of course.
If you tell me that batteries are not included I'll be somewhat
disappointed. But if you try to tell me that none of the actual hardware
is included you should watch your back.

P.S. Please make mine Nikon, Nikon, & Browning HP. Make this happen
and I'll put out the same 20 year old single malt "beverage" [wink wink]
again this year.

Ed,

I tried to watch a rerun of the service thursday, but could not keep my eyes dry
enough to do so.

OT-Longer reply headed your way direct.

I had a lot to do that day so I couldn't get overly involved. The
procession was expected to last three hours and actually lasted over
four. The had staged the 2000 emergency vehicles at the local Air Force
base. So I drove down to within a half mile of the McChord gate and
walked in to a suitable vantage point. While I took camera gear, my
purpose was more to participate with my hand over my heart. The full
spectacle of the event required a helicopter and a wide angle vide lens
to do it up right.

A sad event at a dreadful time of year. We lost four fine officers.
Nine children lost a parent in a few seconds of mayhem.

Ed,

Unfortunately I was at work on Tuesday. Got home at 4:45 and managed to watch
the last half hour, strating when they called in the flag detachment.

To you watch the processional?

If you follow the US National news you may have heard about four police
officers who were shot and killed ten days ago while meeting informally
in a coffee shop prior to going on shift. Those four officers belonged
to the roughly 100 man police force in the town where I live. The
memorial service took place yesterday. It drew an estimated 19,000
police officers and firemen from communities around the US and an
additional 1,000 Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Prior to the memorial service there was a motorcade procession that
consisted of an estimated 2000 police & fire vehicles. The turnout was
so massive that the motorcade took over four hours to complete. Despite
uncharacteristically cold weather, tens of thousands of citizens turned
out along the procession route to pay their respects.

Not surprisingly there were some very evocative images. Below are links
to some of those images of the memorial service and procession.

You can see what the camera settings were by looking for the "more info" link
while you are looking at the picture. The camera embeds this information about
how the photo was taken directly into the photo. Great tool for learning how
(and sometimes how not) to duplicate the effects you see in anyone's photos.
