Fast lenses can also help.
Last year I had a graduation shoot (Woodside Priory, Woodside CA), and
after the event the headmaster personally/privately thanked me for not
using any speedlights (which would have disrupted the ceremonies since
I was given a front-row seat).
Available lighting was only that from skylights, windows and candles.
I used a Nikkor 50 mm f/1.4 for all the indoor shots at ISO 200 (and,
later, ISO 400 as the afternoon progressed); it worked perfectly, and
the only "processing" I did was some cropping for the prints. And,
yes, I did set a custom white-balance per pre-ceremony tests.
My D70/D70s continue to impress! (I had both with me "to be safe" :-)
