On my 8800, I always use the max (i.e. 8MP), though I rarely make use of the quality, and it does make storage a problem. But you never know when you will want to see a fine detail, and seeing as there is no storage issue when out and about now, I don't compromise.

New rumors are out about a new Coolpix camera the P6000. With a whooping 13.5 megapixels. I like to shoot in higher modes and in RAW mode on my 8700 because it does have some advantages. Really only when I plan to printer larger pictures. But it seems that the megapixels really don't add up to better pictures when your typically printing in smaller fromats or displaying on the screen. The large megapixels I can see being used by professionals. Yet its almost seems backwards when the new P6000 (may or may not) have 13.5 megpixels when more serious cameras like the D40 and D60 have smaller sizes for a max.I mostly set mine to 5 megapixels, or 3. What size does everyone else typically use? And if larger, to what purpose?http://gizmodo.com/5022715/nikon-coolpix-p6000-gets-leaked-rumored-to-deliver-an-absurd-135-megapixels
