Civic Ventures, an innovative and influential national nonprofit working to

an exceptional individual with superb managerial and technical Web-based skills
to head up a three-person Web department responsible for the organization�s
multiple public and internal Web sites.
�
Background
�
Civic Ventures is launching a multi-year campaign to establish encore careers as
the biggest change in the American workforce since the women's movement. The
organization is creating new opportunities for the growing movement of people
who want to combine continued income with the personal fulfillment of giving
back. Civic Ventures staff members of all ages are using skills honed in the
nonprofit world, social media, journalism and other fields to build new social
networks that translate the desire for encore careers into action. The
organization's strategic plan calls for strong branding, interactive online
campaigns, thought leadership, policy advocacy and the creation of new pathways
that make encore careers possible.

Director of Web Services
�
The Director of Web Services works with the organization�s senior management
team to leverage social networks and information technology to advance the
organization�s strategy and support its projects.
�
The Director of Web Services builds and leads a high-performance Web team that
integrates existing and emerging technologies and best practices to create a
vibrant and compelling online presence. The director coordinates feature and
function launches and upgrades, as well as periodic overhauls and redesigns, for
the organization�s Web sites, compelling user experience and high-quality
presentation.
�
The successful candidate will have strong project management and personnel
skills. With superb technical and design skills, he or she will be able to
conceptualize, plan and help execute content and design changes under tight
deadlines and to the highest standards of quality.
�
The person hired for this position must be able to work well in an environment

humility. The position reports to a Vice President and manages two employees as
well as consultants and subcontractors on a per-project basis.

Civic Ventures maintains business offices in San Francisco, Boston and
Washington, D.C. �This position is full time and based in San Francisco.
�
Key Responsibilities
�
Strategy, Planning & Coordination � 35%
�������� Coordinates and manages the organization�s Web sites
in an innovative and professional manner in furtherance of the organization�s
mission. Provides creative and technical direction for all Web-related projects
�������� Works closely with the senior management team in
identifying and applying Web technologies that are most suitable for the
development of projects/programs; gathers and organizes specifications and
requirements; establishes project timelines and deliverables
�������� Coordinates the development of new Web features and
functionalities in line with the organization�s agenda
�������� Develops and implements best practices for online user
experience. Identifies and introduces tools, processes and methodologies to
measure, analyze and improve the online experience
�������� Works with the communications staff and other project
leaders on Web and email marketing efforts to increase membership, promote
participation, drive traffic and� �increase awareness. Manages
cost-effective and measurable online advertising and marketing campaigns,
including RSS, Care2, Google Adwords, etc.
�
Design & Development � 35%
�������� Creates the information architecture, wire frames, and
Web prototypes for future programs and initiatives
�������� Designs and develops user interfaces and user
experience
�������� Conceives and directs new media initiatives including
regular online promotional and analytical features using creative multimedia
storytelling technologies such as streaming audio/video segments, podcasts,
social networking, contests, petitions, etc.
�������� Serves as a �go to� resource on design issues for
the organization�s various Websites and Web-based applications
* Oversees maintenance and development of a mixed Content Management System
that integrates open-source Drupal and custom-built ColdFusion-based
Webtools.� Plans migration to a unified Content Management System across all
Websites
�
Reporting & Analytics � 20%:
�������� Monitors, measures and optimizes Web site performance
using Google Analytics and other tools. Analyzes, identifies and proposes
improvements to the user experience
�������� Reports to the Vice President and COO on active
projects and lessons learned from past online initiatives
�
Team Management & Administrative �10%:
�������� Supervises two staff: Web Designer and Webmaster.
Establishes priorities for the Web team, develops production and development
schedules, delegates work within the team
* Coordinates efforts with the staff members responsible for internal
information management and databases to ensure integration with on-line
databases both in the short and long term
* Manages relations with key vendors for online communications and oversees the
use of tools they provide

Qualifications and Experience
�
The Director of Web Services will possess first-rate project and personnel
management skills and experience along with strong technical and creative
skills.This position will report directly to the Vice President and Director of
Encore.org and requires a driven and creative individual who enjoys
collaborative problem solving in a small team environment.
�
The ideal person for this position will offer most of the qualities listed
below. He or she will demonstrate:

* Demonstrated track record of conceptualizing, designing, facilitating and
maintaining reliable, scalable and extensible Web sites and applications
* Agility in development and an ability to manage rapidly growing high traffic
and high availability Web services
* Proven ability to lead on technical issues and to harness team strengths to
solve problems
* Ability to work in varying strategic and tactical situations and be
comfortable handling both high-level design and implementation details
* Solid experience in user-centered design (UCD) process andfamiliarity with
emerging Web technologies including social media optimization
* Hands-on technical and creative leadership, and participation in all aspects
of the design and development process
* Ability to code semantically and optimize code for SEO
�������� Proficiency with Photoshop and a sophisticated design
sensibility
�������� Familiarity with cross-platform (PC/Mac) and
cross-browser (IE6+7, Firefox, Safari and Opera) coding, compatibility issues
and bugs
�������� Ability to facilitate and drive a fast-paced
development environment with an open and fun attitude
�������� Flexibility and ability to adapt to unique situations
and projects
�������� Desire to learn, inspire and innovate
* Self-motivation, perseverance and ability to thrive under deadline pressure
* BS/MS in HCI, Computer Science or relevant discipline and experience

The ideal candidate will also have at least 10 years of professional experience
designing and coding consumer-facing Web sites.
