Hi Folks,
I'm so excited to find this list--I'd really love to find someone with some
experience/understanding of XML/webservice/open data standards for this
position---it'd add so much to the quality of this project. Please feel free to
forward the posting. While I know most of you on this list are beyond the
internship phase of your career, I'd love to have a recomendation from you of
someone more junior.
Best,
Sarah Schacht

Government Transparency Research Internship
About Knowledge As Power
Knowledge As Power (KAP), a 501c3 organization based in Seattle, Washington, is
currently seeking an educational
events intern for Summer quarter, 2009. KAP's mission is to help citizens become
informed and effective in the
legislative process, and we achieve this mission by providing online legislation
tracking and communications services.
Internship Summary
The research interns will work together to research how governments across the
United States produce, manage, and
distribute legislative information. By researching online and contacting city,
county, and state governments directly, they
will catalog their research and produce short summaries for each government.
Interns will be trained and given guidance
on research and reporting. At the end of the internship, the interns will be
very knowledgeable about how various
governments run and governmental compliance with FIOA.
In addition to researching, interns will occasionally assist at KAP outreach
events (at a few concerts,
community events, etc.), talking with the public about KAP's services. Outreach
events are fun, interactive opportunities
to represent KAP at public events. The internship begins in early July, 2009 and
will be completed by early September, 2009.
While most of the internship work can be completed at home, a couple of short
trips may be required within Washington State
for this internship position, with approved travel expenses covered by KAP.
Skills & Requirements
Applicants should have an educational or work background in public policy and
research. General knowledge of the legislative process
and policy are ideal. Ability to complete organized research, use Excel or
Numbers spreadsheets and produce short reports is required.
Successful applicants will be driven, able to work without direct supervision,
outgoing, personable, comfortable working with diverse
communities, and bring creativity to their work.
Application Process
Please provide your resume with examples of research skills you have honed.
Please detail any policy
or legislative process experience you have. Examples of your work (a one-page
writing sample, research paper, etc.) are welcome.
Please list three references from university or employment. Knowledge As Power
is an equal-opportunity employer and
encourages applicants with diverse backgrounds and skill-sets to apply.
Interviews will begin on a rolling basis, hiring will
take place by early July, 2009. Please send applications to Sarah Schacht, KAP's
