Opportunity:
As the Lead Engineer you will lead the effort to architect, develop,
deploy, test, and monitor a cost-effective and sustainable platform
for micro-volunteerism (no pressure :). Strong organizational skills,
incredible technical expertise, and ridiculous attention to detail are
key in this mission critical role. The Extraordinaries is transforming
the way people engage causes and organizations they support, and we're
looking for an Inspired Lead Engineer who wants to help build a
platform for massive social good.
Responsibilities you'll enjoy:
As the Lead Engineer you will have high-level responsibility for the
design, development, and deployment of the system that supports The
Extraordinaries platform. You will work closely with Ben, our CTO, and
have the counsel of industry-leading advisers to lead the technical
team and build out low cost, scalable, loosely-coupled resources that
will support The Extraordinaries' service. Expertise in project
management, capacity planning, and experience in scalable deployments
are key for success in this role.
Areas of focus include:
* Overarching system design / architecture - using PHP (Zend)
* Disaster recovery
* Security
* Scalability
* API design
* Define and document Systems roadmaps to support Product Development Roadmaps
* Research, identify, test, certify, and select technology
products/services required for solution delivery
* Maximize the performance, uptime, and supportability
* Keep up to date with the latest research in architecture and 3rd
party services (such as AWS)
* Monitor, maintain, and update system software
* Monitor system performance
* Create documentation and processes for other technical team members
Skills we're looking for:
* Minimum 5 years programming experience in PHP
* Minimum 2 years managing a team of developers
* Intimate knowledge of platform/server and optimization
* MySQL optimization
* Excellent oral communication, written communication, and interpersonal skills
* Ability to work collaboratively with mobile software and
platform/web engineers
* Ability to scope technical requirements
* Ability to scope timeline and deliverables using an Agile-based approach
* Participation in open source projects a plus
* Experience developing/supporting APIs a plus
* Belief that coding is a craft
* Solid understand of technologies in the following areas:
  * Open source stacks
  * Excellent scripting & shell skills
  * Systems troubleshooting tools
  * Systems monitoring tools
  * Network services, access, and security
  * Amazon Web Services is a plus
Approach you'll need:
* You have to work effectively with small teams and with external
parties from time to time (afterall...we're a startup!)
* Limited supervision but close collaboration is required; you should
be able to operate, drive results, and set priorities independently
* The ideal candidate will be a proactive contributor and subject
matter expert (ie you blog, or contribute to open source projects,
etc.)
* Ability to work in an Agile/XP coding environment (iterate, test,
optimize, iterate!)

* We're located in near Sutter/Kearny in downtown SF, and for this
position need you to be on-site (we're just a few blocks from BART!)
* We're not a non-profit, but we're not a for-profit either; we're
structured as a social-business streamlined for execution (looking for
upside? let's talk...)
* Position is contract-to-hire; we'll bring you on board in a
part-time capacity, and if everything is working out we'll be
(incredibly) excited to extend an offer
* Compensation for the full-time position will be a market-level
salary with full benefits, an upside plan, and that indescribable
