Creative Director

The George Lucas Educational Foundation seeks a creative director to
oversee the branding of all Edutopia platforms, including
Edutopia.org, Edutopia magazine, and marketing/membership collateral.
The successful candidate will provide a holistic vision for the
Foundation's branding, leading a redesign of Edutopia.org, Edutopia
magazine, and all marketing products to bring a consistent look and
feel to Edutopia across platforms. This full-time position reports to
the editorial director and works in our offices near San Rafael.

Responsibilities:

Sets and directs the visual direction for the Foundation's Edutopia
brand across all platforms.
Provides brand expertise and leadership in guiding staff and designers
for new and existing content and services.
Leads the redesign of Edutopia.org and ongoing refreshes.
Produces a redesigned magazine-page layout, interface design,
illustrations, and photographs for assigned articles and Web teases,
integrated with the Web design to create a consistent look and feel.
Develops style guidelines to ensure that designs and artwork meet
established standards when working with photographers, designers, and
artists.
Recruits top-notch photographers and illustrators. Assigns and
commissions art, developing original concepts for illustrations,
photography, and infographics for the Web site, magazine, and
marketing materials. Oversees photo research and selection of stock
art.
Works with editorial, technical, and production teams to ensure the
timely delivery of design, from concept to completion, at the highest
possible quality.
Collaborates with marketing/membership staff to update brand
guidelines for internal and external media. Creates media and
advertising designs for print and online materials.
Partners with the Web team to conduct panel testing and surveys.
Manages freelancers, contractors, and art budget; manages all
design-related independent-contractor contracts and invoices, and
ensures that all contracts are valid.
Works on multiple projects simultaneously.
Participates in additional Foundation projects as needed.

Experience, Skills, and Education:

Ten years of experience as an art/creative director, with at least 3-5
years of hands-on magazine experience.
Professional Web-design experience with an understanding of
HTML/CSS/Flash; coding proficiency not necessary.
Great communication skills. Enjoys collaboration and teamwork; works
with all levels of employees, engages in all content, and is able to
present design vision and philosophy. Strong typography and design
sense.
Ability to think clearly and contribute to editorial discussions and
strategy during the design process.
Fluent working knowledge of InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and PowerPoint.
Detail oriented, and able to juggle multiple tasks and conflicting
deadlines at once.
Solid management skills.
A strong personal or professional interest in bettering public education.
Bachelor's degree in graphic design or a related field, or equivalent
training and experience.

improve K-12 education. Its media formats document and disseminate
stories integrating creative uses of technology with effective
teaching and learning. The Foundation's audience includes educators,
parents, school board members, university faculty, community-based
organizations, and the business community -- all groups working to
create better schools for the 21st century.
