The Bay Area Video Coalition, or BAVC (pronounced “bay-vac”), is a
nonprofit media arts center that was founded in 1976 by a coalition of
media makers and activists who wanted to find alternative, civic-minded
applications for a new technology – PortaPak video. Our continuing
mission is to inspire social change by enabling the sharing of diverse
stories through art, education and technology.
The Director of
Technology is a leader within the organization and is charged with the
visioning, implementation, and evaluation of all technology at BAVC.
The Director of Technology serves on the organization’s management team
and works closely with BAVC’s Executive Director and Program Directors
to assess organizational and programmatic needs related to BAVC’s
service and business environment, identify technology options, and
implement solutions. The Director is also responsible for sharing
BAVC’s technology strategy with the Board of Directors.
The
position reports to the Executive Director on a day-to-day basis, and
manages the organization’s technical staff. Candidates should be
hands-on leaders who demonstrate the skills necessary to manage a
variety of complex infrastructure upgrades as well as basic systems
administration including data systems maintenance, network security and
technical support. This is not a manage-from-the-desk position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
*Oversee organization’s technology infrastructure
*Devise
technology solutions that support organizational vision/goals, and lead
the implementation of these solutions across the organization. Efforts
may include further integration of e-commerce functionality at
bavc.org; customization of Salesforce to serve internal and external
business requirements; working with Preservation and Next Generation
(youth) program staff to develop systems that support each program’s
goals for preservation and dissemination; and developing, in
collaboration with Training and Resources staff, an online training
content/delivery system.
*Supervise a team of staff and contractors to achieve organizational objectives
*Manage relationships with strategic vendors and other third-party firms,
including negotiating contracts, leases and services
*Work with program directors and BAVC technical staff to develop an annual
technology plan
*Contribute to the ongoing vitality and relevance of BAVC
*Support healthy, productive work environment by committing to open
collaboration, communication and accountability
*Participate in the BAVC external presence by attending events, blogging, and
thinking of ways to market the organization.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Required:
*Expertise in software, hardware, networking, digital media and web technologies
*Expertise
in heterogeneous technology environments. Ideally, applicant can use
and support the following operating systems: Apple OS X 10.4-10.5,
Apple OS X Server 10.4-10.5, CentOS 5 (RHEL5), Windows XP, Windows
Vista, Windows Server 2003, Windows NTTechnical
*Experience with virtualization tools; i.e. VMWare Server, Parallels Server
*Ability to configure, support, and backup the above systems
*Familiarity with Force10 Networks FIOS (preferred) or Cisco IOS
*Familiarity with VLAN’d networks; i.e. basic firewall rules authoring,
network transfer across VLANs
*Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, management and
external partners
*Ability to quickly learn, understand and evaluate new technologies
*Experience creating and managing technical budgets, anticipating accurate
revenue and forecasting anticipated expenses
*Three years of supervisory management of a technical staff
*Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Preferred:
*Experience architecting and implementing technology plan projects for IT, media
and R&D
*Familiarity with nonprofit operations
*Video, audio and broadcast expertise
*Experience with Salesforce.com administration
*Experience with high-bandwidth data usage; i.e. fiber optics, Internet2,
National Lambda Rail, etc.
*Expertise in SAN technologies
*Experience with Kerio Mailserver, Apache 2, Joomla 1.0/1.5, MySQL 5, Apple Open
*Directory, OpenLDAP, Kerberos, Samba, SQL Server, Lithium
*Experience implementing IP based phone systems
*Familiarity with digital libraries/archives and industry metadata projects such
as PBCore and Dublin Core
