ONLINE DIRECTOR
For more than 20 years, Rainforest Action Network (RAN) has campaigned
for the forests, their inhabitants and the natural systems that
sustain life. In coalition with indigenous communities and allies from
around the world, RAN uses non-violent direct action, grassroots
organizing, education, and strategic communications to challenge
corporations to stop destructive operations, respect human rights, and
adopt comprehensive policies that reduce their contributions to global
warming.
The Online Director will be a full-time strategist and senior-level
manager responsible for overseeing the creation and ongoing management
of a centralized online department at RAN. The director will lead our
effort to shape the organization’s online communications, advocacy and
fundraising strategies.
Core responsibilities include working with the online team and the
organization as a whole to develop and execute a comprehensive
strategic online plan, managing three online team members, and
participating in the overall leadership of the organization.
The Online Director is expected to oversee online campaigns with
social media components, the management of RAN's e-mail program,
online fundraising, advocacy and activism and the promotion of RAN's
brand and campaign-specific work online.
A successful candidate will have experience with effective online and
offline political or advocacy campaigns and understand the tools and
lessons necessary for both. They will be someone who understands
fundraising, grassroots organizing and advocacy and the goal of
connecting communities to action - both online and off. They see
technology as a creative tool for social change.
Responsibilities
  * Create a comprehensive online strategy for the organization
centered on quantitative goals for list growth, audience
responsiveness, and effective fundraising;
  * Develop strategies for maximizing RAN's use of a wide variety of
internet tools including: email lists, RAN sites, online advocacy,
social media, blogs, social networks, digital multimedia, search, and
online advertising;
  * Coordinate with RAN campaigns and development departments to
maximize the effectiveness of their work and integrate
campaign/fundraising goals into the overall online strategy;
  * Manage and supervise a team responsible for creating and
promoting RAN's online presence;
  * Develop mechanisms for reporting and sharing online results and
analysis of results to relevant staff and board members;
  * Provide ongoing opportunities for online communication skills
and strategy trainings to RAN staff;
  * Contribute to setting overall campaign and organizational
strategies in coordination with the senior management team;
  * Oversee the creation, editing, and management of all online,
multi-channel content;
  * Manage relationships with online service providers, vendors and
contractors;
  * Raise money for the online program through relationship-building
with foundations and major donors.
Qualifications
  * Minimum of four years experience in political or advocacy
campaigns, particularly web-based efforts;
  * Demonstrated ability to work in diverse teams, manage
staff/consultants and drive projects independently;
  * Experience creating and executing data-driven and goal-oriented
strategic online communication, engagement and fundraising plans;
  * Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise and compelling
prose, in the form of blog entries, op-eds, email alerts and/or
essays;
  * Demonstrated ability to generate creative, well-designed web or
mobile or social media content and help tell stories through pictures,
text, etc., online;
  * Experience using and administering Internet technologies such as
content management systems and eCRM; Drupal, Convio and DIA experience
a plus;
  * Excellent skills in Adobe Creative Suite, HTML, and CSS;
knowledge of server-side Web programming and LAMP system
administration preferred;
  * Some experience with producing or supervising the production of
viral videos and/or podcasting in the context of web content and/or
online campaign;
  * Desire to work in fast-paced, mission driven, learning
organization which also prioritizes having fun!

ONLINE ORGANIZER

education, and strategic communications to challenge corporations to
stop destructive operations, respect human rights, and adopt
comprehensive policies that reduce their contributions to global
warming.
The Grassroots Online Organizer will work closely with RAN’s
grassroots, campaigns, communications, and fundraising teams. This
position will be primarily responsible for developing and implementing
Internet campaign strategies to pressure environmentally negligent
corporations; build, diversify and manage RAN’s email activist lists;
and to raise funds online for our programs. Our ideal candidate will
be an organizer-at-heart that has a passion for environmental and
social justice and an intimate knowledge of contemporary Internet
organizing tools.
Specific Duties Include:
  * Managing RAN’s email activist lists (currently housed on the
GetActive/Convio platform) to ensure regular, quality communications
to activists;
  * Managing RAN’s blog and reaching out to other blogs and online
communities to promote RAN’s campaigns;
  * Recruiting new online activists to join RAN’s activist network
with the Grassroots Organizing Department;
  * Identifying and reaching out to diverse communities of online
activists, particularly those currently underserved;
  * Providing online resources to support grassroots activists in
taking offline action;
  * Creating Internet campaigns to help RAN transform the forest and
energy sectors;
  * Developing strategies to integrate online organizing with each
campaign initiative;
  * Training staff members on best practices for online organizing;
  * Working with the development team to create and implement
strategy to raise funds online through virtual marketing, online ads,
email appeals, and other methods;
  * Writing compelling email action alerts, web copy, and materials
for our campaigns;
  * Designing long-term Internet organizing strategies for the organization;
  * Maintaining the quality of data in RAN’s email activist database
and responding to emails from activists;
  * Establishing specific goals and benchmarks for online activist growth;
  * Running queries and analyzing reports to produce detailed,
easy-to-understand reports on recruitment, fundraising, and advocacy
campaigns;
  * Coordinating with RAN’s grassroots team to mobilize activists
using the Internet;
  * Participating in RAN’s staff meetings, organizational planning
and training sessions as necessary;
  * Contributing to RAN’s goals of become a more diverse and
anti-oppressive organization;
  * Sharing office responsibilities to maintain a healthy and safe
workplace. Qualifications:
  * A minimum of two years experience as a grassroots or online organizer;
  * Knowledge of the use of blogs, email, social networks, and other
tools for online organizing and fundraising;
  * Ability to multi-task and maintain a positive attitude;
  * Ability to communicate both on- and off-line with people from
diverse cultures and backgrounds;
  * Strong written communication skills and ability to operate under
tight deadlines;
  * Strong project management skills;
  * Knowledge of GetActive/Convio or similar system preferred;
  * Basic HTML preferred; other languages a plus;
  * Proven grasp of the use of advanced technology for grassroots
organizing and fundraising;
  * Knowledge of forest/energy issues a plus;
  * Interest in anti-oppression and diversity work a plus.
