Is there going to be a pre-RASC diner tomorrow? I always enjoy the good company
and food.

I won't be attending the RASC meeting tomorrow or the OAFs dinner. Which is
probably why I forgot to setup the dinner poll.

I suggest someone, who is going, declare tyrant mode and pick a restaurant.

So far only 4 people voted. I will close the poll at 2:00pm tomorrow. If it

The Canada Science and Technology Museum in partnership with the Royal
Astronomical Society of Canada invite you to the Public Science Talk: In Search
of Time Connect with experts at the intersection of science and society,
technology and culture at the Canada Science and Technology Museum as science
journalist Dan Falk explores some of the most intriguing aspects of time.

Friday, February 5, 2010
8:00 p.m.
Canada Science and Technology Museum
1867 St Laurent Blvd
Ottawa, Ontario

Presentation by Dan Falk, Canadian science journalist, broadcaster, and author

Time is at once intimately familiar and yet deeply mysterious. It is intangible:
we say it flows like a river — yet when we try to examine that flow, the river
seems reduced to a mirage. No wonder philosophers, poets, and scientists from
Aristotle to Einstein as well as present-day scientists have grappled with the
enigma of time for centuries. In his latest book, In Search of Time: Journeys
Along a Curious Dimension (McClelland & Stewart, 2008), science journalist Dan
Falk explores some of the most intriguing aspects of time. During his
illustrated talk, he shows how our ancestors first learned to measure time, how
Newton and Leibniz argued over its nature, how Einstein linked time and space,
and provides a brief look at the physics of time travel and the paradoxes it
presents.

Dan Falk has written about science for The Globe and Mail, The Toronto Star, The
Walrus, SkyNews, Astronomy, Sky & Telescope, and New Scientist, and has been a
regular contributor to the CBC Radio program Ideas. His awards include Gold and
Silver Medals for Radio Programming from the New York Festivals, and the Science
Writing Award in Physics and Astronomy from the American Institute of Physics.
His first book, Universe on a T-Shirt: The Quest for the Theory of Everything,
won the 2002 Science in Society Journalism Award from the Canadian Science
Writers' Association. He lives in Toronto, and is a member of the Royal
Astronomical Society of Canada – Toronto Centre.

Présentation Dan Falk, Auteur, communicateur et journaliste scientifique
canadien

Dans son dernier ouvrage, In Search of Time: Journeys along a

Mail, Toronto Star, The Walrus, SkyNews, Astronomy, Sky & Telescope et New
Radio.
Physics and Astronomy de l'American Institute of Physics. Son premier livre,
Universe on a T-Shirt, The Quest for the Theory of Everything (version française

Yup. A professional videographer records all the meetings (except in a few
cases where a presenter asks not to be recorded, for copyright reasons) and they
are eventually made available in the Centre library on DVD.

If I actually get to WSP, i'll gracefully accept the "Bastard Award". But
right now i'm stuck in a motel in Harrisville, PA in a blizzard. Driving
even more that 30km per hour is extreemly difficult and we've change course
a couple of times to avoid slopes becase the van simply cant get up them
(too slippery).

Hi Attilla,

Sorry to hear that you are stuck in PA. Ginny and I left 2 days early when we
heard the weather
forecast. We managed bare pavement the entire trip. Be very careful on those
interstates.

Ginny and I are now in a resort in Marathon in the Florida Keys. It was sunny
and hot all day and
although we had some rain this evening it was still 24C.

Hopefully we will get some clear skies next week.

Have a great day.

There were 5 OAFs who showed up to the pre-RASC diner. We had a small round
table that made it possible for everyone to be involved in the same
conversation. It was a very interesting evening.
I think that Liang's is quieter than most pubs and it has several round
tables (some that can seat 12) that can improve the dynamic of our
interactions.

Observing configuration: 8"F6 Dob with terminal block, connecting to heater wire
and resistors on finder/telrad, to 'yellow battery' perched on the wood stump
for chopping wood . The Lepus observing session is, as Sue French pointed out
something to do 'as quick as a bunny'.

So I commend to you Sue French's chapter on Leaping into Lepus p. 51 Celestial
Sampler. I remember now that she had a t-shirt with rabbits, and she keeps them
as pets. (Starfest 2 years ago)

Using 8" F6 with a *single* zoom 24mm to 8mm can do M79 with some mag, and a
nice but un-associated cluster: NGC 2017 . I like this link on it:
http://www.jupiter-jp.net/ike/English/description/N2017.htm
Colours are nice. She also mentions IC 416 PN and R lep (Hind's crimson) which
apparently is also starting to rise in brightness.TODO- when the wind dies down
a bit : Even though it was -10, the constant north wind is not fun. The coyotes
whine died down in the face of it.

So Hows it going at WSP? Attilla did you make it on time? Weather been

I found through the Starmaster yahoo group posting a wonderful bunch of
observing guides!
Each one is complete with finder charts at various scales for each object
as well as POSS photos! Very complete and easy to use. The new
interesting one is the rose catalog of compact galaxy clusters, very

Thanks for the lead, Mike. They look interesting. I think I might
try for some of those galaxy groups.

Hi Mike,

Attilla and Ingrid did make it on time but drove all night
to do so. They left yesterday and might have run into the
Georgia storm so I hope they made it safely home.

We have had two good nights but one was pretty windy.

Ginny and I were returning from Marathon last night when we
drove into a monsoon rain on the 7-mile bridge. I could
hardly see the end of my car. As a joke I told her that I
was going to pull off the road until it stopped. She didn't
think much of my joke.

Tonight it is clear right now but with clouds on the horizon
and gusty winds.

Wish us luck.
Bob

Were in North Carolina now driving north. We've had sever
thunderstorms with 100km/hr winds in Florida. No snowstorm -- yet.

Yes, we made it on time by driving all night saturday though sunday.
Ingrid did most of the driving. I'm not sure it was worth it. I was
suffering from sleep deficit the following week. WSP was cold and
windy. I don't recally Starfest ever being so cold. The combination of
cold and sleep deprivation meant I couldnt observe all night the one
fully clear night.

However I did have a great time observing though Normand Fulum's 16".
His 16" at WSP is easily good or better than my 25" at Starfest.
Bastard!

2010 WSP was less fun than previous trips. But it's still a
must-go-at-least-once experience.

Howdy,

Seeing was reasonable on Thursday night so I took some mars images. Here is a
rotation animation:
http://www.paquettefamily.ca/astro/20100211_mars_color_animated.gif

And a single frame:
http://www.paquettefamily.ca/astro/20100211_mars_color_3.jpg

These are "just out of the oven" so I may tweak the processing some more before
I declare it done. It is a lot of work.

The images were taken with CDK12.5, 5x barlow, and Lumenera usb video camera.
The channels were LRGB, with L=IR. Acquisition was with LuCam Recorder and
processing was with Registax and Photoshop.

Cheers,

Andre

Hello Oafs,

I took advantage of the "reasonable" seeing of Feb 12 to take a few images of
Mars. Getting very few opportunities this apparition. Anyway, I put some
images together for this animation:
