Hi Joe and all,

If the skies clear up tomorrow night, how about heading out to Bootland after
the gabfest is done? We'd have plenty time to drive there, setup as the moonset
is not
till 1:33am. That will give us at least 2 hours of dark skies. It will be
cooler and
less problem for the mosquitoes.

I'll keep checking the forecast.

- Pierre

Hi Pierre,

If the weather is good, I am game for Bootland farm Friday night. We could
do some planetary observing before the moon sets.

I am still trying to make up for last year.

How have your lightning pictures turned out? They looked great on your
camera screen. Next time, I'll give it a try.

Joe

Hi Joe,

The lightning shots turned out great! I was quite pleased with the result, I'll
post
some tonight.

I guess that astronomy and weather goes along together just fine.... cause
we're always studying the weather to find out if the sky will clear :0)
Severe weather is fun too (at least it is for me)! But if anyone tries a little
stormchasing, please be real careful out there!! (Before I went out the other
night, I
made sure that Boundary road was to be on the edge of the storm - not in the
middle of it! Even then, I got a little nervous to leave the Portaball all
setup in an open field).

I agree with you Pierre. I love a good storm. I was out last night with my video
camera when the storm came by Embrun. I got 30 mins of really intense lightning.
I tried with my digital camera to get some lightning shots but I I'm not sure
what settings to use. At one point the lightning must have came pretty close to
the house because the power went out for a second?? Does anybody know if
possible it hit close when the power goes out like that really quick and comes
back on???

Hi Chris,

It probably hit quite close... The way to know is the delay between the
lightning and
thunder. If the clap of thunder was near-simultaneous when you saw the bolt,
then I would say it was definitely too close for comfort!!!

I just did a quick google search and came up with the following:

"Sound travels through air at "the speed of sound." Officially, the
speed of sound is 331.3 meters per second (1,087 feet per second) in
dry air at 0 degrees Celsius (32 degrees Fahrenheit). At a
temperature like 28 degrees C (82 degrees F), the speed is 346 meters
per second.

As you can see, the speed of sound changes depending on the
temperature and the humidity; but if you want a round number, then
something like 350 meters per second and 1,200 feet per second are
reasonable numbers to use. So sound travels 1 kilometer in roughly 3
seconds and 1 mile in roughly 5 seconds.

When you see the flash of a lightning bolt, you can start counting
seconds and then divide to see how far away the lightning struck. If
it takes 10 seconds for the thunder to roll in, the lightning struck
about 2 miles or 3 kilometers away. "

So, if you hear the thunder 3 seconds or less after the bolt.....you
might consider seeking shelter!! ;-)

Thanks for the info Jamie,

I keep forgetting to add that vital information! I own a Sky-Watcher
114mm Reflector.

another question about EPs. I saw a meade barlow and from what I
heard this is a good make/brand. my question is this: does it make
much sence to have a good barlow with a not so good EP and vice
versa, or should you have roughly the same quality EP and barlow?

Would a good barlow make your EPs better (if used together of course)
or is everything depended on the EP?

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Just thought I'd add a few comments. In general it's hard to go too
wrong when choosing EPs when starting out. Used astro items retain a
fair value if you decide to sell them. Also amateur astronomers
generally take good care of their stuff so I wouldn't be afraid of
buying used EPs etc either.

Also the difference between "good" EPs and others is often very
subtle. Unless you've been observing a long time you may not notice
a lot of difference. You may be very happy with "cheap" EPs and I
can tell you there are a lot of low cost items EPs etc of very good
quality coming out of Taiwan/China. In fact Meade, Celestron, etc
outsource most of their manufacturing these days and it's
practically all getting made there anyway. If I were you, I'd stick
with the EPs which came with your scope which will likely be pretty
good basic plossl types anyway. But as you get out with the group
learn about the different types and maybe borrow some from other
members. If you try an EP you really like, and the price is right by
all means buy it! But use the ones you have and get a little
experience so you can tell whether upgrading will be worth it or not.

A barlow is often useful and an inexpensive way of doubling your EP
collection. Most basic ones are 2x magnification and have two
elements. It might be worthwhile buying a three element barlow and
getting one which is at least claiming to be "multi-coated" or
better yet "fully multi-coated". This will be more useful to you if
you decide to upgrade EPs later and would probably retain it's value
a bit better and be easier to sell. You asked about a Meade barlow.
It's not enough to know that it's a Meade. They make a lot of
excellent stuff but also have some pretty cheap junk for beginner
scopes. You need to know if it's 2 or 3 element and whether it's
multicoated or not.

You might even consider buying instead of a 2x barlow a 1.6x barlow
for your scope. These are a little harder to find though. I'm
guessing you have a 10mm and maybe 25mm EPs now. If you get a 2x
barlow, the 10mm becomes a 5mm which is probably too much power for
your scope most of the time. Also the 25mm becomes a 12.5 mm which
is pretty close to the 10mm you already have. If you get a 1.6x
barlow the 10mm becomes more like a 7mm and the 25 mm more like an
16mm which will give you a better selection in magnifications.

Hello Chris,

Greg had some excellent points. Just keep in mind; you can never go
wrong with buying good quality optical components; they keep their
resale value.

Every telescope simply collects light and then focuses it down and
presents it to your eye (or for astrophotography, the
camera/imager). The various optical components that the light passes
through or is reflected off of before the image gets to your eye such
as lenses, mirrors, barlows, field flatteners, focal reducers and
eyepieces etc. simply shape and size the light image for
presentation.

Due to the fact that the light source we are looking at is so far
away and so faint, the raw light that enters the telescope is
precious. Good quality optical elements will preserve that precious
light for presentation and poor quality optical elements will waste
the precious light by scattering it around before it gets to your
eye. A good quality barlow will not make an poor quality eyepiece
better; however it will present a better view compared to using a
poor quality barlow.

Eyepieces are an important component of the telescope optical path;
they are chosen by the observer and the choices are vast. The tricky
bit is for the observer to choose the best ones that suit the
telescope and observer and then get them at the best price possible
(not a small feat).

For a novice on a budget, it is best to purchase a couple of decent
solid performers like the Plössl eyepieces and a good quality 2x
barlow; this will get you going. When your out with us observing,
check out the views through other telescopes and see what eyepieces
and other accessories people are using; you will be the ultimate
judge on what is best for you, your telescope and your budget.
Getting there is all part of the fun and education; with OAOG, you
make a bunch of friends on the way.

Cheers, Ken

another question about EPs.

Thanks,

Chris

Hi Chris,

I'm still tending my wounds (skeeter bites) after my short visit there
on Tuesday night. If you haven't given blood lately and have some
nuclear powered repellent the satellite picture is looking better than
the CSC says. Myself, I'm staying in tonight and getting ready for
tomorrow and Saturday. Later.

I'd consider it, for a few hours at best ( I have to work tomorrow).
I don't have the combo for the gate, mind you.

I know what you mean Greg, in late April I managed to get a good night
out visiting my parents near Cornwall. They live in the country and
have a nice dark sky. Unfortunately the dark sky comes with some
mutant mosquitos, I swear their on roids. Damn bite marks stayed with
me for almost a month.

Anyway I was hoping to configure the PEC on my mount but it looks like
it might have to wait till the weekend from the looks of it.

If anyone has a spare illuminated reticle for sale
please let me know.

Chris

I walked the dog at around 10 and noticed that the sky was pretty good. The
transparency was poor but the seeing was a bit above average. There was only
a slight twinkling of the stars. In less than 12 minutes, I set up my 85mm,
f7 refractor and put up a table in my driveway. It was the only place I
could get a clear view of the moon and Jupiter.
Ken added a bar to a Telrad base that I had purchased so that I could use
the Telrad on my refractor and Mak. The setup worked very well and was a big
improvement to the Starbeam finder that was originally installed on my
refractor. Thanks Ken.
I tested my upgraded binoviewers with the amplifier/corrector, with a 2x
Barlow, with the amplifier/corrector in the 2x Barlow and with the
amplifier/corrector in a 3x Barlow. It boosted the power of my 32mm eyepiece
pairs 2x, 3.2x, 5x, and 7.2x so that my eyepiece pairs acted as if they were
16mm, 10mm, 6.4mm, and 4.4mm. My focuser had enough range to handle each
configuration. I do not think that I will have to purchase another pair of
eyepieces. The power range on my refractor was 38x to 136x.
I observed the moon. The views were breathing taking. Using both eyes did
render the view more three dimensional. I could sense the depth of the
creators and the height of the mountains. I also could sense the curvature
of the moon. Its edges appeared to curve away.
I then went to Jupiter. The four moons appeared to float in space and be at
different distances. The perspective was there. The actual view of Jupiter
was good, but I have seen better in my scope. Again a spectacular view!
After about one observing, I quit.
I was so enthralled with my three dimensional views that I need a Scotch to
settle down.
I am sure that I will be doing more observing from my home over the summer.

Hi all,

Just checked the latest weather and doesn't look like the skies will clear until
Monday evening at the earliest.

Drats... I was looking forward to some dark skies late at night.
Better luck next time...

See you tonight at the gabfest.

- Pierre

Hi All,

Sheila and I have been busy for a while and not always been able to attend
the get-together's regularly. That may have just gotten worse or better with
a priority adjustment. :-)

Sheila gave birth to our daughter Holly Jean Ross on Monday at 10:35am.
Despite being 11 days late, she weighed in at a dainty 7 pounds 3 ounces.

Some pictures are available here:

For any who might be interested, I've decided to give up my ETX125 so it is
posted in the fore sale section of the yahoogroup. It should be a really
good price for a super-portable scope with lots of features. Don't fret for
me, I have an 8" LXR200 that I'll be picking up shortly. sorry for the
clouds.

Andrew

Howdy,

I've just posted my Coronado PST for sale. 585$ gets you a premium
Coronado PST h-Alpha telescope. Does NOT come with the Pelican carry
case, just the standard box.

It's got to go to make way for another astro toy...stay tuned for more
details.
