The #2 issue of Offshoots of Orgonomy has just been posted to our website, available for free downloading as a 40.5 MB PDF.  This publication was produced by the late Lois Wyvell, Wilhelm Reich's personal secretary, who passed away in 2005.  The publication sold only a limited number of copies, and the remaining inventory sat in boxes in basement location for several years, before being rescued, cleaned up and offered again to the public.  A total of 15 issues were published, filled with interesting articles by both professionals and laypeople, students of orgonomy and "old hands" familiar with Reich's work over decades.

The first two issues, #1 and #2, sold out some time back, so both of those are now available for a free download at Natural Energy Works, the bookstore for OBRL. http://www.naturalenergyworks.net

Go to the above web-link, and scan down on the left-hand side list for Offshoots of Orgonomy.  Click on that link and it will take you to the Offshoots webpage, which lists the various issues along with their contents.  In addition to the free download, you can also purchase the remaining in-print back-issues, which are priced economically.

INSANE ISLAMIC APPEASEMENT!
Apologetics and Rationalizations for Sadistic Mutilations of Women's Genitalia, now in the USA.

Today a "nick", tomorrow (or today behind closed doors) the full mutilation.
What a stark and utter betrayal of children and women.

Nobody dares to say, the parents who do this to their daughters should be arrested and deported if they dare to perform the mutilations by sending the girls overseas.  Doctors who do it in the USA should also be arrested and lose their licenses.   Boston must not become Baghdad, Chicago become Cairo, etc.   And no, the AAP does not have "good intentions" here.  This is vicious MD sadism against girls and women, even if done by a female MD or "nurse".  It is, however, glossed over by smiles and excuses!  We are only trying to help the girls, to protect them, by cutting them on the most sensitive parts of their sexual organs with our knives!  See how kind and caring we are!   No. You are an ugly bunch of life-haters, making excuses for one of the more toxic aspects of Islam.

It is yet another and quite dirty incremental step towards Islamic totalitariansm within the USA, promulgated and masked by a corrupted and dangerous system of authoritarian and sadistic hospital-MDs.  Brought to you by the same fanatics who burned Wilhelm Reich's books.

Write to them, and tell them what you think:

And no, don't be polite on this one.  Give them hell.

And for heaven's sake, stop going to any doctor who does this filthy thing, or apologizes for it.

Outrageous.

Group Backs Ritual 'Nick' as Female Circumcision Option
By PAM BELLUCK

In a controversial change to a longstanding policy concerning the practice of female circumcision in some African and Asian cultures, the American Academy of Pediatrics is suggesting that American doctors be given permission to perform a ceremonial pinprick or "nick" on girls from these cultures if it would keep their families from sending them overseas for the full circumcision.
The academy's committee on bioethics, in a policy statement last week, said some pediatricians had suggested that current federal law, which "makes criminal any nonmedical procedure performed on the genitals" of a girl in the United States, has had the unintended consequence of driving some families to take their daughters to other countries to undergo mutilation.
"It might be more effective if federal and state laws enabled pediatricians to reach out to families by offering a ritual nick as a possible compromise to avoid greater harm," the group said.
But some opponents of female genital mutilation, or F.G.M., denounced the statement.
"I am sure the academy had only good intentions, but what their recommendation has done is only create confusion about whether F.G.M. is acceptable in any form, and it is the wrong step forward on how best to protect young women and girls," said Representative Joseph Crowley, Democrat of New York, who recently introduced a bill to toughen federal law by making it a crime to take a girl overseas to be circumcised. "F.G.M. serves no medical purpose, and it is rightfully banned in the U.S."
Georganne Chapin, executive director of an advocacy group called
Intact America, said she was "astonished that a group of intelligent people did not see the utter slippery slope that we put physicians on" with the new policy statement. "How much blood will parents be satisfied with?"
She added: "There are countries in the world that allow wife beating, slavery and child abuse, but we don't allow people to practice those customs in this country. We don't let people have slavery a little bit because they're going to do it anyway, or beat their wives a little bit because they're going to do it anyway."
A member of the academy's bioethics committee, Dr. Lainie Friedman Ross, associate director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago, said the panel's intent was to issue a "statement on safety in a culturally sensitive context."
Dr. Friedman Ross said that the committee members "oppose all types of female genital cutting that impose risks or physical or psychological harm," and consider the ritual nick "a last resort," but that the nick is "supposed to be as benign as getting a girl's ears pierced. It's taking a pin and creating a drop of blood."
She said the panel had heard anecdotes from worried doctors.
"If we just told parents, 'No, this is wrong,' our concern is they may take their daughters back to their home countries, where the procedure may be more extensive cutting and may even be done without
anesthesia, with unsterilized knives or even glass," she said. "A just-say-no policy may end up alienating these families, who are going to then find an alternative that will do more harm than good."
Currently, more than 130 million women and girls worldwide have undergone female genital cutting, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. It is mostly performed on girls younger than 15 in countries including Ethiopia, Sudan and Somalia. Consequences can include severe complications with
pregnancy, childbirth and sexual dysfunction.
The academy's statement acknowledged that opponents of the procedure, "including women from African countries, strongly oppose any compromise that would legitimize even the most minimal procedure."
Dr. Friedman Ross said, "If you medicalize it and say it's permissible, is there a possibility that some people will misunderstand it and go beyond a nick? Yes."
But she said the risk that people denied the ceremonial procedure, usually on the clitoris, would opt for the more harmful one was much more dangerous.
And the statement said that, "in some countries where FGC is common, some progress toward eradication or amelioration has been made by substituting ritual 'nicks' for more severe forms."

Intact America, one of the more active child-protection organizations, is taking on the AAP.  They previously did a good job getting signatures to petition the CDC to not advocate the official medical quackery of boy-mutilation as a method to "prevent AIDS".   Historically, boy-mutilation was originally proposed in the Americas as a measure to "prevent masturbation" and specifically the heinous disease known as "masturbatory insanity".  That was an officially-recognized disorder in the medical journals of the late 1800s, and the Christian or non-religious MDs of that day, just as today, fell under persuasion from Jewish doctors that it would be a good thing if everyone did it.  And so within 50 years or so, it exploded from a tiny percentage of immigrants, into a mainstream mutilation of nearly 80% of all men in the English-speaking world, where it had previously not existed.  Today, it is promoted, also without evidence, as a "hygenic" measure -- a ridiculous argument when one considers how most of the world's male population is intact, not mutilated, and is not suffering from epidemics of genital disease, including AIDS.  With hard work in public education by oppositional groups, the rates in the USA are today down to about 50% of all baby boys.  That's still 50% too high, and even Jewish activists have joined the anti-mutilation organizations, seeking to end them.

Intact-America is today taking on the AAP over its approval of girl-mutilation, something which the AAP did under pressure from largely-Muslim doctors servicing the Islamic communities, who either want to mutilate the genitals of girls, or who think they can reduce the more serious mutilations by doing smaller ones in the hospitals.  Muslims (and a few Coptic Christians) do these mutilations for basically the same religious-superstitions reasons as did the masturbation-anxious physicians of 100 years ago.  The AAP thinks a "small cut" will be sufficient to mollify misogynistic immigrants whose ideology views female sexual feeling as a dirty evil needing to be stamped out.  The goal of FGM always was, to wipe out the female sexual drive.  So this measure by the AAP, if it stands, will be used in opposition to existing laws which make FGM a criminal act.  In fact what will happen is, with the AAP approvals, Muslim doctors will begin doing it, and test cases will then go to the courts.  They will firstly do only the "little nick", and argue with smooth-talk, with arrogant proclamations that even if it is illegal they will "do it anyhow" so why not "keep it sanitary, in the hospitals", with PC victimhood and "religious freedom" language.  "The Jews are allowed to give the holy sacraments to their boy's penises, to cleanse them of The Devil of sexual feeling, so we should be allowed to bless our girls and rid them of The Devil of sexual feeling in the same manner" they will say.  And the courts will probably go along with it, striking down existing federal and state laws prohibiting the mutilations. and thinking it will remain "only a nick".  But from there, we will see special clinics devoted to Islamic FGM, just as exist within the Muslim world.  And the horrific nature of it will grow, with full clitoridectomies, as nobody in social services will be checking up on such girls.   And it will fit magnificently with veils, polygamy, child-marriages (old men to young girls), mosque-violence against infidels, and all the rest which life-hating PC ideology already tries to justify and defend.  It will then grow and spread, and only 20 years down the road when older women come forward will the NYT or other lib-newspapers write a hand-wringing articles about "how could this have developed?", ignoring their long-time role in Islamic apologetics.

Evidence from clinics in Africa already have shown how compromises on the mutilations allows them to grow and spread, while strict forbiddance with criminal penalties and loss-of-license for professionals who do them, works to reduce them in a dramatic manner.

This must be stopped before it emerges into daylight, after which it gets social oxygen and spreads.  The AAP needs to reverse this ill-considered approval of "the little nick", which will grow into full-scale FGM as seen elsewhere in the world.

Your signature would help.  See below.
You can add to or edit their form-letter as desired.  Professionals especially are encouraged, to take a stand, using your full names and credentials.

If this issue is important to you, to stop boy-mutilation and girl-mutilation, consider to get on the mailing list of this organization and spread the information through your own personal networks.

25,278 Petition Signatures Delivered To The CDC!
(in opposition to boy-mutilation as an "AIDS prevention" measure.)

But now America's baby girls are at risk!
Please  take action to protect them today.

In late April, I spoke via conference call with Dr. Peter Kilmarx, Chief of HIV/AIDS Prevention at the Centers for Disease Control, and several other officials from the CDC, to urge them to refrain from recommending routine circumcision for baby boys. I told them Intact America had a petition from thousands of you who felt the same way.
On May 6th, we followed up by sending 25,278 signatures to the CDC to drive home the message.
I want to thank you and the tens of thousands of intactivists who added your names to this petition calling for the protection of our baby boys.
It's not over between us and the CDC. We'll be in touch to let you know its response to our petition.
But our efforts can't end here.

A new threat has surfaced, and this time it's our baby girls who are at risk.

Late last month, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a new policy statement calling for a lift of the Federal ban outlawing all forms of female genital mutilation ("FGM") in the United States.
We are stunned by this affront to 30 years of global efforts to stop female genital cutting.
Please send a letter to the AAP demanding that it retract its dangerously misguided policy statement immediately and leave our baby girls intact!
Thank you again for all that you do to help keep America's babies intact.
Sincerely,

Georganne Chapin

Good news, and bad...  Little girls across the USA can breathe a little easier tonight.

Following a howl of protest from multiple persons and organizations, dozens of letters from every quarter, professionals, women's groups, private individuals, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) reversed and dropped its recent ill-conceived approval for female genital mutilation.  Here's a report:

Sometimes public criticism and protest works.  Now, if only little boys can be equally protected, with an end to this violent contempt for the penis and male sexuality.

The bad news:  Australia is considering an identical ruling to the AAP, to allow for "limited" female genital mutilation, which as discussed in prior postings will most certainly plant the seeds for more horrific mutilations later on.

A better solution would be to give a lengthy prison sentence and then deport any "Islamic cutter" -- the sadist-specialists who travel from home to home and perform this butchery -- and to likewise punish with jail terms and/or deport the fathers and mothers who do such a barbaric act, or any "health" professional who does so.  There is a need for muscle and teeth in laws for protection of children against razor wielding sadists, with or without the "seal of approval" of medical organizations or mosque-leaders.

Dear OBRL Quarterly subscribers.

I was recently asked why OBRL-Quarterly was quiet for the last several months.  The reason is, I've been finishing up two new publications, as identified below.

A new edition of the Orgone Accumulator Handbook will be available for shipping in about three weeks.  A second new book, detailing my early Kansas cloudbuster experiments at the University of Kansas, was also produced and is currently available.  Neither is being openly sold on the OBRL/NEW bookstore webpage, and can only be obtained through email special order, direct from me personally.  The cloudbusting book requires advanced approval before it can be purchased (see below).  At some later point, they both will become available through naturalenergyworks.net, though the cloudbuster book I will probably restrict in sales permanently (see my notes on that below).

For now, these are special offerings only to those who have maintained contact through the OBRL mailing lists.

Thanks and Best Wishes,

Foreword by Eva Reich, MD
Appendix document by Stefan Müschenich, MD

In the 1940s, the physician and natural scientist Dr. Wilhelm Reich discovered and documented a new form of energy which charged up living organisms, and also existed in the open atmosphere and in high vacuum. Reich's laboratory and clinical findings indicated this new energy, which he called the orgone, could be photographed and measured, and had powerful life-positive biological effects. Reich trained other scientists and physicians in his findings, and together they set about applying the inexpensive orgone treatment methods - using a device called the orgone energy accumulator - against various illness, including cancer, with remarkably good results. His published findings shocked the scientific world of his day, however, ultimately leading to numerous smear articles in the popular press, and trumped-up charges by a power-drunk Food and Drug Administration. The FDA "investigation" lead to a court trial of much greater significance than the better-known "Scopes Monkey Trial". Ignoring Reich's evidence and declaring "the orgone energy does not exist", US Courts ordered all books on the orgone subject to be literally "banned and burned". Reich was thrown into prison, where he died. His work was nearly forgotten except by a small group of supporters.

In this book, former university professor Dr. James DeMeo examines Reich's evidence and reports on his own observations and laboratory experiments, which have repeatedly confirmed the reality of the orgone phenomenon. Dr. DeMeo also recounts the observations and experiments of others, particularly physicians working in private European clinics where open use of Reich's controversial orgone energy accumulator proceeds today. The Orgone Accumulator Handbook gives a warning about low-level atomic and electromagnetic radiations, as from nuclear power plants, power-line fields and cell-phones, along with advice on measurement and protection against such toxic energy.  The book also gives a discussion on the subject of healing waters from natural hot springs, a form of energy medicine which once was widely used in North America before the rise of the authoritarian MD-hospital system and the powerful federal bureaucracy of the FDA.  Dr. DeMeo also gives detailed construction plans for people to build their own orgone energy blankets and accumulators, which are inexpensive and simple to construct, though requiring specific direction as to their materials and environments.

This is the Third Revised and Expanded 2010 Edition of the Orgone Accumulator Handbook, nearly 100 pages larger than prior editions and carrying a Foreword by the late Dr. Eva Reich (the daughter of Dr. Wilhelm Reich), along with many photos, diagrams and charts. It retains all the original construction plans, updated to address new issues about the best materials for orgone accumulator and blanket construction.  Two Appendix documents are also included, one which summarizes a double-blind and controlled clinical experiment proving the physiological effects of the orgone accumulator on volunteer subjects in a German university, and another which details the similarities of Reich's orgone energy to the cosmic ether and "dark matter" of modern physics. This new edition also includes a section providing New Evidence on the Persecution of Reich, along with a bibliography, index and many weblinks for added information.  It has many photos and materials extracted from Dr. DeMeo's research publications verifying the reality of the orgone energy, and is a "must have" for all those interested in the issue of life-energy, subtle-energy  or energy-medicine research.  This is an excellent introduction to a major scientific discovery, organized for the educated layperson but with sufficient detail and citations to stimulate the curiosity of the open-minded physician and scientist.

This new edition will be available for purchase through the international Ingram network starting after the end of August 2010, and therefore can be ordered from mainstream book networks worldwide.  However, it is NOT currently available from any website, and won't be for a few more weeks.  Available only from Dr. DeMeo using this email address:

This is a work of historical significance, an experimental study reproducing parts of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich's controversial atmospheric research, specifically the technique of Cosmic Orgone Engineering (or "cloudbusting"). This study took place in the late 1970s at the University of Kansas, Geography-Meteorology Department, as part of the author's graduate-level research, demonstrating changes in cloud cover and rainfall across the state of Kansas as the apparatus was operated. Reich's original findings had been dismissed as "impossible" by the scientific community of his day, stirring up such outrage that his writings were literally "banned and burned" by Federal bureaucrats, who also threw Reich into prison on fabricated charges, where he died in 1957. This particular study was the first university-level investigation into the most extreme of Reich's claims - of an atmospheric energy which could be affected by his cloudbuster invention to bring rains over widespread areas, even during droughts or in deserts. The study verified Reich's claims. This publication of the original study also includes a major separate work as an Appendix, Evidence for the Existence of a Principle of Atmospheric Continuity, which makes the argument for a renewed examination of the old cosmic-ether of space, as a parallel concept to Reich's orgone energy discovery. It also reviews similar inexplicable long-distance energetic phenomenon in the natural world which require a similar mechanism, such as solar-terrestrial phenomenon.

This new edition will be given a limited distribution only, to serious scholars and students with a good background in orgonomy who can show a need for it, available directly from Dr. DeMeo using this email address:

Dear OBRL-Quarterly Subscribers,

I've just posted a chapter section from the new 2010 edition of the Orgone Accumulator Handbook to a special internet page, entitled "New Evidence on the Persecution of Wilhelm Reich".  While the larger Handbook is available only by private ordering for awhile, as mentioned in a prior posting, I put this section of it to internet, given persisting and unwarranted claims in the USA and abroad which cast blame for the death of Reich where it least belongs, and ignores and evades it where it is most abundant. Here:

New Evidence on the Persecution of Wilhelm Reich

A downloadable PDF version is also available, here:

The article summarizes the growing evidence that Reich's major detractors were, just as Reich declared, Communist Party operatives and even members of Soviet/KGB-controlled spy rings, working clandestinely in the USA.  It also exposes efforts by the NKVD -- the early forerunner of the KGB -- to kill Reich in Oslo (but only succeeding in "disappearing" one of Reich's associates).  The European and Soviet Comintern (Communist International) inaccurately declared Reich to be one of the much-hated "Trotsky-ists", following the 1932 publication of his Mass Psychology of Fascism (which too many forget is equally critical of both Communist Red Fascism and Nazi Black Fascism).   The article exposes how the worst and most ugly smear articles attacking Reich in the 1940s and 1950s were penned by Comintern activists for publication in magazines run by KGB operatives, how the top FDA field inspector in charge of the Reich investigation was himself a probable Communist mole, who knew and worked with the same smear-article writers in Communist organizations years earlier.  The article also indicates how one of Reich's own attorneys was, unbeknownst to him, literally up to his eyeballs in Communist Party activities, with clear Soviet sympathies.

Also note, the web-based version of this article provides a PDF download link to the article by John Wilder "CSICOP, Time Magazine and Wilhelm Reich", as taken from Pulse of the Planet #5 (Heretic's Notebook).  You can also get it here:
Wilder also added a short Postscript to his article, which overall exposes the hard-left and even Stalinist backgrounds of many of the contemporary Reich-haters.

In short, the old idea that Reich was destroyed by "American right-wingers" and "Christian fanatics", "McCarthy-ites" and such, is shown to be false at its core -- though a fully fleshed-out detailing of these issues must wait for later.  The "bottom line" is, that Red Fascists (and not typically moderate conservatives, nor old-fashioned anti-socialist liberals) bear the primary responsibility for Reich's destruction, the same kind of people who continue trying to discredit Reich's research legacy and to destroy modern-day orgonomic research.  Their major social identifications are the left-oriented and mud-slinging "skeptic groups" and their socialist allies in authoritarian Big Medicine.  These are the same people today who promote "Big Brother" government in all its excesses, and who make open political alliances internationally with every other kind of Emotional Plague fascism as can be found:  Red, Black and Islamic.

Given the current unavailability of Jim Martin's excellent book, Wilhelm Reich and the Cold War -- which carries the bulk of the most conclusive evidence on the left-wing and even Comintern/KGB backgrounds of Reich's major detractors -- it seems important to get this kind of summary information out into the public.  Nearly all of Reich's 20th Century biographers were either self-identified liberals or left-wing in views, and even while admiring Reich for most of what he accomplished and wrote, as a group they tended to dismiss his assertion of a communist conspiracy with either disbelief, total silence on the subject, or outright contemptuous dismissal.  This could be excused ten years back, but no longer.

Anyhow, these articles are now available for free and open sharing internationally.  Hopefully they will stimulate rational open discussion on the matter.  Review them as you may, and spread the word.

Below is given a selection of quotes taken from various books and websites, not a comprehensive list by any measure, but indicative of what the Founding Fathers of Marxist Communist Collectivism were thinking and advocating. I've debated this material with several Marx-friendly associates and friends, and in every case they were adamant that Marx and Engels were good and decent sorts, while all blame for the horrors of the Russian Revolution, and later communist tyranny elsewhere, falls to the likes of Stalin and Mao Zedong. Certainly, those latter two dictators perfected the arts of communist slaughter. However, the quotes given below are prima facia evidence that both Marx and Engels knew very exactly that, in order for their communism to work, it had to be pushed into society with extreme violence, and also to undertake a "revolutionary holocaust" against the "racial trash" and "counter-revolutionary" peoples who would have the audacity to refuse the communist utopia.

Over the period from 1996 through 2003, OBRL hosted a series of summer laboratory seminars for professionals and students, on the subject of Wilhelm Reich's discovery of the bions, and his related findings on biogenesis, the cancer biopathy, and the Reich blood test.   The seminars provided laboratory demonstrations reproducing many of Reich's findings and concepts, and allowed photographic documentation of many of the central phenomenon.  The seminars were team-taught by different groups of orgonomic professionals, to include Dr. Richard Blasband, Dr. Stephen Nagy, Dr. Bernard Grad, and Dr. James DeMeo.  Many of Reich's central experiments  -  such as the spontaneous organization of protozoans from disintegrating moss and grass, Reich's incandescence experiments with iron-filings, charcoal and sand, Experiment 6 and Experiment 20, as well as the Reich blood test -  were repeatedly reproduced and demonstrated.

At one point, Dr. DeMeo gave a separate presentation on the kinds of observations routinely made at these seminars, with slides, to the Second International Symposium on Pleomorphism held in Ashland, Oregon.   His article on this subject "Bion-Biogenesis Research and Seminars at OBRL: Progress Report", appeared in the #5 issue of the OBRL journal Pulse of the Planet, along with related bion-biogenesis articles authored by Dr. Grad and Mr. Maxwell Snyder, along with another on the related bion-like sanal particle discoveries of Bong-Han Kim, as authored by two South Korean professors.  Copies of that #5 issue of Pulse -  which was also sold as a book with the title Heretic's Notebook: Emotions, Protocells, Ether-Drift and Cosmic Life Energy, with New Research Supporting Wilhelm Reich -  are still available for purchase from here:
(listed on the left-hand side - full Table of Contents provided)

This publication stimulated a great interest in the subject of Reich's discoveries, and has been distributed internationally.  Most recently, several persons asked when it might be possible to view the original color photomicrographs of bionous materials as made during those seminars, and which appeared in DeMeo's article mostly as only black-and-white images.  It was therefore decided to make the "Bion-Biogenesis Research..." article available to the public as a free PDF download.  Here:

"Bion-Biogenesis Research and Seminars at OBRL: Progress Report" with color images, by James DeMeo, PhD   Download as PDF 1mb.

This same article is also now available as a Turkish translation, OBRL'de Biyon-Biyogenez Arastžrmalarž ve Seminerler: Ilerleme Raporu, made by Mr. Serdar Çetin of Turkey, available here:  Download as PDF 1mb.
Our thanks to Mr. Çetin for volunteering to do the translation.

The attached photo shows growing bions made from iron dust at 5000x magnification.  They were created by heating the original iron dust to red-hot incandescence, then plunging into a sterile KCl solution (0.1 N).  The solution was autoclaved, and photographed here after 3 months of incubation.  See p.103 of the article.

At a later point, it is hoped to place a more complete set of slides from Dr. DeMeo's larger presentation to the Second International Symposium on Pleomorphism onto a video.  Watch for future announcements.

Here is a nice picture of the Moon, just entering totality during the recent Lunar eclipse which began on the night of 20 December, and reached its peak darkness in the early AM of the 21st.  The entire Moon is inside the Earth's shadow, but with a slight bluish tone apparent on the receding limb, still getting a bit of diffuse sunlight exposure.  This blueness of the Moon's limb is most apparent on the diminishing sunlit parts during a Lunar eclipse, especially just before it goes fully dark, when the thin Lunar plasma atmosphere is subjected to only a small amount of light exposure and excitation from the Sun.   The photo is of course a time-exposure of nearly a half-minute, which helps to intensify the colors.  At this time of the photograph, the disk of the Moon could hardly be seen with the naked eye.

If you have trouble viewing the above photo try here.

For a larger image, click on the picture, or try here.

For color-comparison to a more typical but impressive Harvest Full Moon picture, click here.

Here's what NASA says about the color of the Moon during Lunar eclipses, which apparently should be shielded from any bluish frequencies:

White light from the Sun is a mixture of all the colors of the rainbow. When a ray of "white" sunlight passes at grazing incidence through Earth's atmosphere, molecules and aerosols in the air scatter blue light in all directions (this is why the sky is blue). The remaining reddish light is bent (refracted) into Earth's umbral shadow zone, giving the eclipsed Moon a coppery glow.
http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2003/12may_lunareclipse/

You've heard the phrase "Blue Moon", or "once in a Blue Moon" to signify a very rare event... and indeed the "blueness" of the thin and rarified ionized-plasma and electrostatically-charged Lunar atmosphere is typically something not routinely observed.   Frequently, atmospheric dusts or fire-smoke will also yield up a blue coloration to the moon, but that is not what is happening in the case of the blue-edge effect during a Lunar eclipse, as shown in the above photo.  (See my discussion on other blue-glowing Lunar anomalies here.)  This phenomenon is not given much attention by mainstream astronomy, as it appears to be an anomaly.  And it isn't going to be easily observed or photographed unless one actually looks for it, makes an effort to try and photograph it.  One's telescope lenses and imaging cameras must also be designed for full and natural color rendition.

The shot was made using a Meade 16" LX200R telescope with 24 second exposure, using a Kodak 4 mp digital camera, as taken through a Meade 4000 Super-Plössel 56mm eyepiece.  The image was captured just before midnight at the OBRL Greensprings Observatory, at 4200' elevation, east of Ashland in Southern Oregon, USA.   It would have been of sharper focus and better color rendition except for a thin layer of cloud-haze at the time.

Subject: Japanese Earthquake Disaster and Radiation Concerns
greensprings...
Send Email Send Email

Everyone probably knows about the terrible earthquake and tsunami catastrophe in Japan.
The attending damage to their atomic reactors appears to have pushed at least one or two into a critical situation with heavy radiation releases.  They are being described by news reports with the word "melt-down", so the issue of radiation clouds moving across the Pacific is of issue.  Government agencies are typically down-playing everything.  (See weblink below)

There are citizen's networks which have independent monitoring of specific atomic reactors in the USA (Three Mile Island for example), and a few of them are listed here:

At OBRL we have several GM apparatus constantly running, monitoring background radiation as well as special ones monitoring oranur effects inside an accumulator -- we will report if anything anomalous shows up in the readings. Our high-altitude location makes us a prime location for monitoring of this event, should the worst come true.

If a radiation release makes it to the West Coast USA, the oranur reactions will create drought, as was noted in the 1990s following Chinese and French atom-bomb testing.  Details on those observations are found in back issues of our journal, Pulse of the Planet.  However, since we had a major climate shift back towards cold-wet conditions starting around 2000, the anticipated oranur reactions this time around may show functionally different reactions.  We will see.

I am proposing that anyone on the OBRL-News lists who is engaged in similar background radiation monitoring, or who knows of other radiation-monitoring networks, private or government, to share whatever information they have.  Pertinent and helpful information could then be posted to the larger OBRL subscriber network.

Especially any news reports of heavy blue glows over the Japanese atomic plants, or massive bird die-offs or disappearances should be shared, as that is a good indication of extreme oranur conditions.  This happened at both Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, as noted in the published articles in our Pulse.

These earthquakes were preceded by a large outburst of solar activity, of several large sunspot groups -- the first in many months -- plus solar flares.  This triggered off at least two major volcanic eruptions, in Hawaii and Indonesia.  Geomagnetic activity was particularly high, with strong aurora reactions, 24 hours before the earthquake in Japan.

This has to be the worst natural disaster in my lifetime.

Our deepest sympathies and hopes for recovery go out to the Japanese people.

Following on the Japanese earthquake-tsunami disaster and subsequent atomic power plant malfunctions.

1.  It does appear that one or more of the Japanese reactors have suffered at least a partial core meltdown, with significant radiation releases locally.  News reports abound on this, and I cannot counsel which ones are more or less correct or accurate.

2.  The German website Der Spiegel has an excellent graphic animation which plots the spread of the radiation plume around the region of Japan:

Unfortunately, it does not show what's happening farther off to the east, over the Pacific and beyond.  But there is a special dust-aerosol satellite sensor which allows one to plot the wind directions from the east coast of Asia to points well outside of Japanese regions.  It is here:

Unfortunately, this is a very low-resolution map, and while it shows the general pattern of atmospheric aerosols moving east from Japan are headed to the West Coast of North America, this is hardly better than what we know generally from typical mid-latitude wind patterns.  According to my own time-plots, the atmosphere which was over Japan at the time of the accidents should be arriving on the West Coast some time from late tonight (14 March) and over the next days.

3.  What will this mean?  So far, there is no clear reason to panic, and certainly the large distances will mean most of the air will have been well mixed or subjected to rains during the trip across the Pacific.  I expect whatever radiation arriving on the West Coast will be extremely dilute and perhaps not even up to levels detectable by ordinary radiation counting instruments.  But as noted in our last Bulletin, we have several top-quality radiation-measuring instruments recording the atmosphere at our location around-the-clock, and will send out a notice if any abnormally high levels are detected.

There also is a citizen's radiation monitoring network which can be consulted, here:

It has one station in Vancouver, Canada, another near to Hanford Washington, and a third near to San Francisco.  Our station in southern Oregon fills a gap, but we have no way to integrate our readings into any real-time display for internet.  It is still better than nothing.

Governments and universities also have their own monitoring stations, but whatever they report to the Federal authorities is subjected to political data fudging, as documented in the book "Deadly Deceit: Low-Level Radiation, High-Level Cover-Up" by Gould and Goldman, which revealed how measured data on high radiation exposures close to nuclear power plants was being literally erased by federal authorities before being made public.  Official government policies have always favored atomic power, so it is always best to have an independent evaluation of the situation.

Over the last 50 hours, our sensitive GM counter which detects alpha, beta, gamma and x-ray has yielded around 18-20 cpm average.  That is natural background.  If it stays that way, then one only has to be worried about possible long-term accumulations of isotopes which can get into the food-chain, and about which we cannot advise as yet because it is not certain such a problem will develop, and in any case it requires a much more elaborate method to track and monitor.  But it is not a bad idea to get some frozen or even (yuck) canned vegetables into storage in case by tomorrow we find the situation is worse than expected.

4.  We have got some good tips on the use of iodine compounds by which to take in advance of a high radiation situation.  Basically these recommendations are to take potassium iodide supplements, or a few drops daily of a Lugol or saturated iodine solution -- but these are not the same as disinfectant iodine, so please consult knowing people at your local health-food store or pharmacy for advice on that.

5.  As to the issue of oranur and orgone accumulators, of course in a radiation event you want to keep them sheltered from outdoor dusts and contaminated air even moreso than usual.  Wipe inside and out with water, sponge-cleaning and such.  Tips on this are given in full in my Orgone Accumulator Handbook.  Try to get the new 2010 edition if you can.

Reich showed that radiation poisoning could be mitigated against by having a strong and healthy life-energy situation.  Lab mice in his oranur experiment lived longer if subjected to orgone-accumulator charging before radiation exposure, as opposed to after-the-fact.  So the trick is, whatever are your usual health-building steps, including the accumulator, do more of them now and it will help your overall resistance should the worst come later on.

More later,
Best wishes to all,

James DeMeo, PhD
Director of OBRL

UPDATE on Reactor Accident in Japan and
Possible USA Rad-Fallout

01:00 hrs 16 March 2010, Wednesday early AM.

The news out of Japan continues to be horrible, and you can consult various websites for information on that.  I find the Drudge Report to be most balanced, in presenting weblinks from both government and non-government sources:

Right now they have various reports on the situation in Japan, plus conflicting opinions from all around about whether or not to dose up on potassium iodide or other iodine supplements.  Make your own decision -- we have the stuff here, and as a precaution are taking small doses.  There's lots of info on internet about that, so inform yourself.  We won't enter into that discussion.

What about measured radiation levels?

Firstly, a prior Bulletin gave a wrong web address for a citizen's radiation monitoring network webpage.  Here is the correct one:

Here is another website from the Austrian Zentral Anstalt für Meteorologie und Geodynamik, a weather-forecasting group which provides a world-map developed from computer model forecasts, for the hypothetical global movement of Cesium 137 contamination from a point-source in NE Japan.

Caution is advised on how to interpret this map!  It does not present directly-measured data on radiation in the atmosphere.  It is a computer model which assumes a certain amount of radioactive contamination being emitted in NE Japan, and then uses existing meteorological data to plot where the hypothetical amounts of assumed nuclear radiation would be blown.  Now, this is a reasonable procedure, but assumes quite a lot, notably that they really know how much atomic radiation was injected into the atmosphere, and at what levels in the atmosphere, and that the radioactive material is persisting in the atmosphere and not being significantly diluted or rained out, or falling out by gravity.  So it needs some verification by actual measurements of radiation "on the ground" or in sampling aircraft.

We can nevertheless view this map as a cautionary indicator, that the atmosphere over NE Japan at the time of the accident is now making its way into the USA West Coast.  But so far, we have no indications from measurements here, nor at the above noted Radiation Network, that there are actually higher counts of radiation above normal background being detected.  We have only a few sampling stations to go on.  If someone hears of higher radiation counts, actual measurements from reliable sources, then please share the info.

Radiation levels here in Southern Oregon at our facility remain at background levels only -- counts around 20 cpm, which is nothing out of the ordinary.

Our OR-charged geiger counters, which detect the oranur-effects noted by Reich (which is a different component of atomic radiation, of an entirely different nature, and cannot be shielded) are also showing nothing extraordinary, as compared to what they were yielding during the weeks before the Japanese accident.

If this situation changes, a report will go out immediately.

Thanks to all who shared information for this report.  Please continue to send in your suggestions.

UPDATE on Japanese Reactor Accident
and West Coast USA Radiation
22:27 hrs - 16 March 2011

A recent news item indicates the plume of radiation from the Japanese reactor accident will enter the US West Coast on Friday, 18 March.

The NY Times also provides an independent weather forecast interactive that plots the movement of the presumed radioactive clouds.

This interactive is approximately the same time-line as provided in the weblink given yesterday from an Austrian meteorological website:

Yesterday when this was posted, I failed to notice the end-point of their animation also ends on 18 March, Friday.  So it was an error to say the cloud was already approaching the coast.  As of noontime today, Wednesday 16 March, the cloud was just passing north of Hawaii.

The intensity of the radiation in both of these interactive graphics is based upon many assumptions, so we really won't know what's going to happen until some "ground truth" observation and measurements are made, directly into the cloud area.  One hopes the US Government would make such measurements soon, and honestly report the results to the public.  One article suggests this is going to happen.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110316/ap_on_re_us/us_west_coast_radiation_monitors

Unfortunately, we still have the specter of prior public lying by officials of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Environmental Protection Agency, just as in the CDC, Big Medicine, and a dozen other government bureaucracies and private Mega-Corporate entities, regarding nuclear power plant accidents and other critical issues in the USA.  Nobody ever got fired for any of that, and the same people are still around, running the show.  Consequently, it is not surprising to read there are conflicting recommendations from both public and private sources on whether or not people on the West Coast are at risk, should take precautions, whether or not one should take iodide compounds, etc.  It beggars belief that government agencies or the military would not have already sent aircraft into these radiation clouds to sample them, determine their levels of radiation and toxicity, etc., but so far I have heard nothing being reported on the subject.

The bottom line appears to be, you are on your own, or reliant upon only private citizen's networks to give independent analysis of the situation.

Thankfully we now have two independent citizen monitoring networks for radiation detection and reporting. One I have already posted a notice about:

This next one, however, is newly reported only now:

Taken together, these two reporting networks provide reports from seven different stations on the West Coast USA, with another located in Southwestern Canada.

So, bookmark these and pay attention starting on late Thursday (tomorrow) or early Friday.

UPDATE #3 ON JAPANESE REACTOR ACCIDENT
AND POSSIBLE WEST COAST USA FALLOUT

NOTE: 3:30 PM 19 March -- we are now picking up what appears to be significant radiation in recent snowfall.  An analysis of this is underway, but this is new information that should be considered against what is written below, which was before these newer measurements were made.  More info shortly in another report.

+++++++++

11:30 hrs 19 March 2011, Saturday Morning

According to the two citizen's networks independently monitoring nuclear radiation, there is nothing above normal going on related to the Japanese reactor accidents.

According to our GM detectors here at the OBRL Greensprings location, in SW Oregon at 4300' elevation -- which are not integrated into those networks (our internet-connection is too haphazard) -- only background counts have been recorded over the full period of monitoring, starting more than a week ago.

The continued low readings from two independent sources is good news, though we must be alert for potential increases over the next week, as the atmosphere on the West Coast today is only that which was over Japan at the start of their terrible crisis with the earthquake and tsunami.  Several of their reactors went critical over the following week, and so that atmosphere has not yet arrived to the West Coast.

As noted previously, the Pacific Ocean is very large, and the discharges of radioactive smokes and gasses in Japan were almost entirely confined into the lower atmosphere, the troposphere.  This means, that air will be subjected to a lot of stormy weather and scrubbing as it moves across the Pacific.  With luck, the worst of it will have rained out long before that atmosphere arrives into North America.

The major loss of live is still the terrible earthquake and tsunami which took so many lives in Japan.   And the worst of the atomic radiation effects are so far confined to Japan, hitting them badly, and may continue doing so over months or years.  That point should not be lost.

Another point that should not be lost, in the current efforts in some political quarters to apologize for and defend nuclear power plants, with the goal to construct more of them in the USA and elsewhere, is the long history of lying, cover-ups, suppression and fudging of data, and other forms of deception by the nuclear industry and its claimed-scientific defenders.  A lot of these problems were predicted and avoidable.   See here:

A similar or even longer list of problems and cover-ups could be made for American or European atomic reactors.  Should a strong earthquake occur near to any other atomic plant, in North America or Europe, expect similar problems -- which is a good enough reason why they ought not to have been built in the first place.  If you have an earthquake and explosion at a coal or oil-fired power facility, you have to repair things, but this business of evacuating giant areas and repair-crews going on suicide missions and such, it makes even more outrageous the efforts by some to pooh-pooh the dangers of these fantastically-complicated and constantly breaking-down atomic monstrosities.

I would remind everyone that back issues of our journal Pulse of the Planet carried multiple articles on unusual atmospheric and biological reactions at other atomic power accidents, such as near Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, and also following atomic bomb tests.  The articles of Mitzuru Katagiri, for example.  If you are interested in the subject of oranur effects from atomic reactions -- which unlike the particles detected by GM counters, cannot be shielded -- then you should get those for review.  They are available here:

We also have a special photocopy reprint available which gathers those reports into one single publication:

UNUSUAL LONG-DISTANCE ATMOSPHERIC AND GEOPHYSICAL EFFECTS FROM UNDERGROUND NUCLEAR BOMB TESTS AND NUCLEAR POWER PLANT ACCIDENTS: Suppressed Scientific Evidence.
Reprints of scholarly articles and reports from back issues of Pulse of the Planet journal, by Katagiri, Whiteford, Kato, DeMeo and Nagy, addressing this important issue.  Documents the reality of what Reich called "oranur" as observed by eye-witnesses to nuclear accidents, as well as phenomena which can only be explained by the existence of a radiation-irritated atmospheric/planetary energy continuum.  An essential tool for anyone concerned about nuclear issues.

UPDATE #3 ON JAPANESE REACTOR ACCIDENT
AND POSSIBLE WEST COAST USA FALLOUT

NOTE: Midnight 19 March: Earlier today we measured radiation levels from a snow sample collected on 18 March, which showed more than double what was recorded for normal background. The readings for both the snow sample and the background were compiled from several long run averages, which suggested a significant elevated level of radiation. However, the sample rapidly lost its radioactivity, returning to background levels within a few hours, which is a confusing anomaly. Evaluations made on samples of snow falling today, 19 March, do not show elevated readings, so we must chalk this up to being anomalous and unexplained.

UPDATE #4 ON JAPANESE REACTOR ACCIDENT
AND POSSIBLE WEST COAST USA FALLOUT

24 March 2011 - noontime

Over the last days our radiation recordings here at OBRL-Greensprings have been at normal levels.  No increases in background nor isolated bursts have been recorded.  The burst recorded on 18-19 March has not been repeated.

Meanwhile, we found another radiation monitoring network, this time from the EPA:

The recordings noted for Eureka, California are representative of what we have been getting:

You will note there are long stretches of normal low background, punctuated by small bursts every so often.  Those can be from nuclear contamination, but in most cases are probably from cosmic-ray events.   The findings on this offical web source parallel the two citizen-monitored sources, which I'll repeat again, here:

We are also in contact with a few independent laboratories in the West, making their own measurements of background radiation and rainwater or snow samples.  So far everyone we know is reporting only normal background with the occasional small bursts of activity.

Monitoring continues, and will continue so long as the crisis in Japan warrants.

If we do not send out additional notices, it means the situation is normal.

Thanks for your interest.

UPDATE #5 ON JAPANESE REACTOR ACCIDENT
AND POSSIBLE WEST COAST USA FALLOUT

29 March 2011 - noontime

Over the last days our radiation recordings here at OBRL-Greensprings have been at normal levels.  No increases in background nor isolated bursts have been recorded.

The following letter on Radiation Measuring may be of general interest.

+++++++++

Dear D.,

If you want to detect specific radionuclides, then a "standard" thick-walled GM counter will not be of much help.  Especially those old "civil defense" units with yellow paint are worthless to detect anything except the most extremely high radiation.

What you need is a good broad-spectrum GM counter, something with a thin mica end-window, which will allow one to evaluate for increases in general background.  GM counters with thick metal walls are made primarily to detect hard gamma radiation -- those are not much help in this kind of work.  Alpha particles as from uranium or plutonium, can be stopped by a sheet of paper, while the weaker beta particles require nothing greater than a sheet of aluminum foil to be halted.  Stronger beta and gamma will be deeply penetrating, however.  So you really want to have a detector that gets all of these types of radiation.  Uranium and plutonium are alpha-emitters, for example.

However, if a few radionuclides are on the increase, as with iodine-131 or cesium-137 from an atomic accident, or the heavier-weight mixed-oxide (MOX) elements from the reactor core, then given how these get distributed and mixed into the atmosphere over great distances, more specialized equipment is necessary, as I discuss below.

Firstly, to repeat myself, the two citizen-run radiation monitoring websites I have recommended are organized by companies that sell exactly these kinds of more sensitive GM equipment.

And here is one run by the EPA:

And I will repeat myself in stating the belief that the very large distances across the Pacific Ocean, from Japan to North America, make any kind of strong radiation contamination very unlikely.  Not impossible, but unlikely.  For example, the distance from the Chernobyl nuclear accident site to those parts of Europe which suffered from contaminations is about 1/3 the distance or less, as from Japan to the West Coast of North America.  I do not wish to fully downplay the risks, but it is important to be realistic.  We are personally taking the milder iodide supplements here, "Kelp Caps" with 325 micro-grams of natural iodine, as a precaution, but continue drinking our well water.

We do use and sell the RadAlert 100, which is excellent for this kind of monitoring, but haven't had any stock available to sell since a few days after the start of this crisis.  The manufacturers are almost exclusively selling straight to Japan these days.  But it is worthwhile to shop around and see what is available.  We still have some books on the issue of atomic radiation exposure, under the left-side section on "Electrosmog and Nuclear Radiation Hazards".

To evaluate risk from radiation exposure, a good first step is to use such a sensitive mica end-window GM counter to monitor open-air readings, as well as readings at the soil surface, or on open surfaces, or in snow or rain-water samples.  That's fairly easy to do, and you just hold the detector close to the material or surface you wish to evaluate.  If you can hook it to a computer for data-acquisition, so much the better, and you can then watch a graphical display of radiation over days, to see if it is stable or increasing.   If your instrument has a continuous counting feature, you can also do longer time-counts, run a background check over 1 hour for example, with a second equal time-count while the device is placed over a water sample from your rain or snow, or with it resting on the soil surface.  Divided by 60, you can then compare the counts-per-minute from air-background with rains or soil conditions.  They should be approximately the same, though in some areas there is natural radioactive minerals in the soil, or as in some parts of the dry Western USA, residues of atomic fallout from the time of atmospheric bomb tests.  So one must be careful about just what is being measured on the soil surface.  It is therefore better to take a sample of rainwater which has never been in contact with the surface.

That's what we are doing here -- air, surface and snow-rain samples with a sensitive GM counter -- which so far have not shown any significant increases in general background radiation.   Such raw measuring with a sensitive GM counter is the first step in keeping alert to a problem.

The next steps are dependent upon what you find with the first step.

If you pick up even a doubling of background over a longer period -- say a rise from 20 to 40 cpm over more than a few hours -- that is not likely due to merely cosmic ray events, and should raise concerns and warrant continued monitoring.  If it persists, then other procedures, such as inquiring if other stations are getting something similar, is necessary.  Consult those monitoring maps I give above, for example.  That's where the radiation-mapping networks are very important.  One station might show a blip or burp of higher readings over a short time, but if it does not persist and is not reflected in a wider region, then it is unlikely to be due to larger environmental contamination.

If a thin-walled GM counter starts to show a continued high count, a typical analytical procedure is to use pumps to make 24-hour air samples, pulling a larger volume of air through a filter disk.  That will concentrate any small radioactive particles which might be diffusely spread in the air.  The filter disk is then subjected to evaluation on a sensitive GM counter.  If something of greater increase is found using that procedure, then the same filter-disk is subjected to further analysis with a pulse-height or spectrum analyzer to figure out the exact species of radionuclide giving the readings.  Concentrating water samples for possible radiation is a more difficult procedure, requiring firstly a larger sample of rainwater which is then concentrated by boiling or evaporation.  The devices I worked with years ago used a 1 meter glass tube, with the bottom composed of a metal tray which could be removed.  You filled the tube half-way with rainwater, subjected it to heating whereupon the water slowly simmered and evaporated away, leaving an evaporation residue in the metal pan at the bottom.  The metal pan is then subjected to separate evaluations just like the air-sample filter disk.

Unfortunately we don't have the equipment for those latter two steps -- neither the volume air-filter or water-evaporation sampling systems, nor the spectrum analyzer for specific radioisotopes.

However, since we are not detecting any higher levels from open air, surface or snow-water samples, those additional steps do not appear necessary, in my view.  (Not yet, anyhow.)  If we detect increased open-air or rainwater readings, we'd probably shift our work activities in that direction, and try to find the funds to obtain that kind of equipment.

I was in Pennsylvania in late October 1976 when Chinese atom bomb fallout hit the region, working at the Elsworth Baker Laboratory, then under the direction of Dr. Richard Blasband.  We measured about a 20% increase in readings in the open air, with a doubling of readings right at the level of the surface soil and grass. That was significant, and it reflected a lot of diffuse stuff settling down from the Chinese test.  Milk products were primarily affected, and were banned for a period.  To my knowledge, with respect to the Japanese reactor accident, this is happening today only in Japan, maybe in some outlying Islands or on the Chinese coast, but not to my knowledge anywhere in North America, far across the Pacific.

So I would agree with those who say people should take precautions in Japan, and that people in North America are, for the moment, not at risk.   But I disagree with any suggestion that "only" a "mere" doubling of general background would be insignificant, especially if this is persistent and found over a larger area.  Given the independent monitoring efforts, we have a double-check against whatever the government-run laboratories are stating.

For more info on that old Chinese fallout problem, as a comparison to the modern problem, see here:

Simpson R.E., Shuman, F.G.D., Baratta, E.J. and Tanner, J.T. (1981). Projected dose commitment from fallout contamination in milk resulting from the 1976 Chinese atmospheric nuclear weapons test. Health Physics. 40. pg. 741-744.

I hope this helps.

Please keep me informed if you do learn of any increased radiation levels in North America.  The reactors in Japan continue to belch out more radioactive debris, and so it could eventually have some consequential effects even on the other side of the Pacific.

Also note, nothing here addresses the important issue of oranur effects, which is a general irritation of the atmospheric life-energy which cannot be shielded, but which typically creates a variety of biological reactions, including blue-glowing or blue-haze anomalies in the atmosphere surrounding the accident sites.  This can occur even in the absence of particle-detections, though typically is most acute right near to where the accident or incident.  Underground a-bomb tests created something of a global oranur reaction, however.  It requires very specialized equipment to detect, and we probably are the only facility in the Western half of the USA to monitor for that, given the controversy which surrounds the subject.  But so far there is nothing unusual happening there either.  For example we were recording up to 4000 cpm from high sunspot activity back in the mid-2000s, but throughout the entire period since the Japanese reactor accident, the oranur readings have never gotten higher than 800 cpm.  Again, those are not standard radiation counts.
And it is not clear to us how these instruments would react if we do get a clear fallout incident.  I only mention it because several persons have asked about this.

For more information on the oranur subject, please read the section on "The Oranur Experiment" by Dr. Wilhelm Reich, in his book Selected Writings.  That book is available in the "Wilhelm Reich" section of our on-line bookstore, along with another report on the oranur subject: Unusual Long-Distance Atmospheric and Geophysical Effects from Underground Nuclear Bomb Tests and Nuclear Power Plant Accidents: Suppressed Scientific Evidence.  See the "Radiation Hazards" section.  The new 2010 edition of my Orgone Accumulator Handbook also has an expanded discussion on these issues.

Update #6 on the Japanese Atomic Reactor Accident at Fukushima.

1.  Over the last week, no significant increases in radiation have been detected in the atmosphere or snow-rain samples as measured at the OBRL facility near to Ashland, Oregon. At present there are no elevated readings to be observed at our location.  Real-time monitoring of background radiation levels continues, recorded to computer so as to review trends, showing an approximate 20 cpm, with isolated transients between 5 to 40 cpm.  This is well within normal ranges.

2.  Snow-melt and rainwater samples are now routinely being tested with both NaI scintillation and GM detectors, inside a lead shield.  On one occasion, an anomalous set of readings were recorded that probably were the consequence of Fukushima radiation.  As noted in the prior Update #3, on the 19th of March, snow-melt was measured from the previous day's precipitation using a precision Ludlum 2200 Ratemeter/Scaler with 2" mica end-window GM probe.  The readings over that snow-melt sample were at 66 cpm, approximately doubled from the background of 32 cpm.  This amount of radiation was of concern, though still very "low level", and also very temporary in occurrence.  It was associated with a strong oranur reaction locally, as felt by several persons.  However, both the high GM count and the oranur reaction dissipated away within an hour or two after the initial measurements.  At first it was considered this was the consequence of some short-lived isotopes, but now we feel it might have been an effect of accumulated radon daughters dissolved in the water, which when it warmed, out-gassed and so was more readily detected at that exact moment, but not later when diffused in the open air.  Once the water reaches a stable temperature, the outgassing halts and readings go down, to resemble background radiation levels.

The date of this incident matches approximately with the time when UC Berkeley lab detected the first arrival of I-131 and other isotopes in local rain.

They considered the amounts inconsequential, and while I would not yet become alarmed about it, it does confirm at least a very brief exposure at our facility near Ashland, Oregon to some of the trace residues from Fukushima.  If that kind of thing became chronic, it would be of concern, but this was not the case.  It appears this radiation event was a downstream effect from one or more reactor explosions in Fukushima, Japan on or before March 16th, a time when the jet-stream was oriented nearly exactly West-->East moving fast across the Pacific Ocean.  With a jet stream moving at 100 mph, over one day it would move 2400 miles, or 4800 miles in two days.  Even considering some lag time for materials to be slowly transported up to the altitude of the jet-stream, this could have brought such radioactive materials to our West Coast USA location in short order.

3. There are several new radiation-detection networks which can be consulted:

A.  Radiation Detection Network for Japan

B.  Geiger Counter Bulletin
Includes information on the Terrestrial and Atmospheric Radiation Awareness Network (TARA Net) as well as for rdtn.org.  This network appears to be just getting started.

C. Weather Online's Radiation Tracker
Look at the upper right side of this webpage for links to tracking maps, plotting the hypothetical spread of radiation from Fukushima east across the Pacific.  You can adjust this to review the situation for Japan, for the USA, or for the entire Northern Hemisphere, and also detailing various radionuclies.  Be sure to read the cautionary statements about these products.  Especially the map for xenon emissions would wrongly lead one to believe the "end of the world".   Keep in mind the color-coding or color-intensity markings on these maps are somewhat arbitrary, determined by the computer programmer.  My advice is to consider them as relevant only for wind-direction and atmospheric mixing, given how they are based upon atmospheric computer modelling.  Nobody is out there measuring radiation levels in the air, and there is no satellite sensor doing this either.  They merely assume so much radiation into the air at Fukushima, then make estimates or assumptions (guesses) on how that radiation mixes in the air, and from there where it will go depending upon prevailing winds.  They may or may not assume the loss of radioactivity due to raining-out in storms, for example.  This is a problem with computer models, as they only show what you program them to show.  Compare these to the probelm of how the fastest and most powerful computers on Earth have difficulty predicting weather more than three days out.  A good weather forecaster using "old fashioned" observation can do a good job two days out.  And your Grandpa with arthritis in his leg can frequently do just about as good as, or better than either one.

4.  The radiation tracking networks previously recommended still are working away, and are among the best resources.  Here:

So long as these citizen-run networks show low levels across all those stations, one should not get panicked, in spite of some of the rather wild claims which are circulating on the conspiracy websites (ie, the chameleon Alex Jones and crew).  If a significant number of them begin showing regional readings at or above ~100 cpm even over one single day, even for just a few stations in the same region, then you can worry plenty.  However, throughout this entire critical situation, so far the only places on the planet which have shown such a situation are in Japan or within a short distance surrounding it.  People are rationally expressing concerns about radiation accumulation in the water, soils or food chain in North America, and that might eventually turn out to be of long-term consideration.  But right now that is not the case, and there also is a considerable irresponsible alarmism at work, often created by some of the same conspiracy websites which claim the earthquakes were "caused by HAARP" and the "Evil USA" (and which before the earthquake-disaster were preoccupied with "911 trutherism", "chemtrails", "international cabals", "illuminati", etc.).  A bit of skepticism towards both government and anti-government, and a lot of self-education on the issues surrounding low- and high-level radiation exposure, would appear to be the most healthy and productive path.  The only conspiracy at work in this entire matter has been the irresponsibility of the nuclear power plant vendors and operators, who have a long history of documented deceit, accidents, disasters, and cover-ups.  And as we see in Japan itself, these same people are going be put under the spotlight for what happened.   It appears very unlikely any new nuclear power plants will be constructed on planet Earth for the next 50 years.

If you don't own a geiger counter, now would be a decent time to consider a purchase, as part of the self-education process, though be prepared to wait for weeks or months for delivery, given the current high demand for these products.

5.  Based upon the continuing nature of these possible risk-exposures, OBRL will soon be obtaining specialized radiation detection instrumentation -- a gamma-energy NaI-scintillation spectrum analyzer with computer display and appropriate software -- allowing for determinations of specific radioisotopes in water, air, or other material samples.  The cost of this equipment is about $7,000 and we are asking for donations to help recover the costs to our limited budget.  If you can assist, please use the OBRL donation page, which also carries our contact information:
