UPDATE #5 ON JAPANESE REACTOR ACCIDENT
AND POSSIBLE WEST COAST USA FALLOUT

29 March 2011 - noontime

Over the last days our radiation recordings here at OBRL-Greensprings have been at normal levels.  No increases in background nor isolated bursts have been recorded.

The following letter on Radiation Measuring may be of general interest.

+++++++++

Dear D.,

If you want to detect specific radionuclides, then a "standard" thick-walled GM counter will not be of much help.  Especially those old "civil defense" units with yellow paint are worthless to detect anything except the most extremely high radiation.

What you need is a good broad-spectrum GM counter, something with a thin mica end-window, which will allow one to evaluate for increases in general background.  GM counters with thick metal walls are made primarily to detect hard gamma radiation -- those are not much help in this kind of work.  Alpha particles as from uranium or plutonium, can be stopped by a sheet of paper, while the weaker beta particles require nothing greater than a sheet of aluminum foil to be halted.  Stronger beta and gamma will be deeply penetrating, however.  So you really want to have a detector that gets all of these types of radiation.  Uranium and plutonium are alpha-emitters, for example.

However, if a few radionuclides are on the increase, as with iodine-131 or cesium-137 from an atomic accident, or the heavier-weight mixed-oxide (MOX) elements from the reactor core, then given how these get distributed and mixed into the atmosphere over great distances, more specialized equipment is necessary, as I discuss below.

Firstly, to repeat myself, the two citizen-run radiation monitoring websites I have recommended are organized by companies that sell exactly these kinds of more sensitive GM equipment.

And here is one run by the EPA:

And I will repeat myself in stating the belief that the very large distances across the Pacific Ocean, from Japan to North America, make any kind of strong radiation contamination very unlikely.  Not impossible, but unlikely.  For example, the distance from the Chernobyl nuclear accident site to those parts of Europe which suffered from contaminations is about 1/3 the distance or less, as from Japan to the West Coast of North America.  I do not wish to fully downplay the risks, but it is important to be realistic.  We are personally taking the milder iodide supplements here, "Kelp Caps" with 325 micro-grams of natural iodine, as a precaution, but continue drinking our well water.

We do use and sell the RadAlert 100, which is excellent for this kind of monitoring, but haven't had any stock available to sell since a few days after the start of this crisis.  The manufacturers are almost exclusively selling straight to Japan these days.  But it is worthwhile to shop around and see what is available.  We still have some books on the issue of atomic radiation exposure, under the left-side section on "Electrosmog and Nuclear Radiation Hazards".

To evaluate risk from radiation exposure, a good first step is to use such a sensitive mica end-window GM counter to monitor open-air readings, as well as readings at the soil surface, or on open surfaces, or in snow or rain-water samples.  That's fairly easy to do, and you just hold the detector close to the material or surface you wish to evaluate.  If you can hook it to a computer for data-acquisition, so much the better, and you can then watch a graphical display of radiation over days, to see if it is stable or increasing.   If your instrument has a continuous counting feature, you can also do longer time-counts, run a background check over 1 hour for example, with a second equal time-count while the device is placed over a water sample from your rain or snow, or with it resting on the soil surface.  Divided by 60, you can then compare the counts-per-minute from air-background with rains or soil conditions.  They should be approximately the same, though in some areas there is natural radioactive minerals in the soil, or as in some parts of the dry Western USA, residues of atomic fallout from the time of atmospheric bomb tests.  So one must be careful about just what is being measured on the soil surface.  It is therefore better to take a sample of rainwater which has never been in contact with the surface.

That's what we are doing here -- air, surface and snow-rain samples with a sensitive GM counter -- which so far have not shown any significant increases in general background radiation.   Such raw measuring with a sensitive GM counter is the first step in keeping alert to a problem.

The next steps are dependent upon what you find with the first step.

If you pick up even a doubling of background over a longer period -- say a rise from 20 to 40 cpm over more than a few hours -- that is not likely due to merely cosmic ray events, and should raise concerns and warrant continued monitoring.  If it persists, then other procedures, such as inquiring if other stations are getting something similar, is necessary.  Consult those monitoring maps I give above, for example.  That's where the radiation-mapping networks are very important.  One station might show a blip or burp of higher readings over a short time, but if it does not persist and is not reflected in a wider region, then it is unlikely to be due to larger environmental contamination.

If a thin-walled GM counter starts to show a continued high count, a typical analytical procedure is to use pumps to make 24-hour air samples, pulling a larger volume of air through a filter disk.  That will concentrate any small radioactive particles which might be diffusely spread in the air.  The filter disk is then subjected to evaluation on a sensitive GM counter.  If something of greater increase is found using that procedure, then the same filter-disk is subjected to further analysis with a pulse-height or spectrum analyzer to figure out the exact species of radionuclide giving the readings.  Concentrating water samples for possible radiation is a more difficult procedure, requiring firstly a larger sample of rainwater which is then concentrated by boiling or evaporation.  The devices I worked with years ago used a 1 meter glass tube, with the bottom composed of a metal tray which could be removed.  You filled the tube half-way with rainwater, subjected it to heating whereupon the water slowly simmered and evaporated away, leaving an evaporation residue in the metal pan at the bottom.  The metal pan is then subjected to separate evaluations just like the air-sample filter disk.

Unfortunately we don't have the equipment for those latter two steps -- neither the volume air-filter or water-evaporation sampling systems, nor the spectrum analyzer for specific radioisotopes.

However, since we are not detecting any higher levels from open air, surface or snow-water samples, those additional steps do not appear necessary, in my view.  (Not yet, anyhow.)  If we detect increased open-air or rainwater readings, we'd probably shift our work activities in that direction, and try to find the funds to obtain that kind of equipment.

I was in Pennsylvania in late October 1976 when Chinese atom bomb fallout hit the region, working at the Elsworth Baker Laboratory, then under the direction of Dr. Richard Blasband.  We measured about a 20% increase in readings in the open air, with a doubling of readings right at the level of the surface soil and grass. That was significant, and it reflected a lot of diffuse stuff settling down from the Chinese test.  Milk products were primarily affected, and were banned for a period.  To my knowledge, with respect to the Japanese reactor accident, this is happening today only in Japan, maybe in some outlying Islands or on the Chinese coast, but not to my knowledge anywhere in North America, far across the Pacific.

So I would agree with those who say people should take precautions in Japan, and that people in North America are, for the moment, not at risk.   But I disagree with any suggestion that "only" a "mere" doubling of general background would be insignificant, especially if this is persistent and found over a larger area.  Given the independent monitoring efforts, we have a double-check against whatever the government-run laboratories are stating.

For more info on that old Chinese fallout problem, as a comparison to the modern problem, see here:

Simpson R.E., Shuman, F.G.D., Baratta, E.J. and Tanner, J.T. (1981). Projected dose commitment from fallout contamination in milk resulting from the 1976 Chinese atmospheric nuclear weapons test. Health Physics. 40. pg. 741-744.

I hope this helps.

Please keep me informed if you do learn of any increased radiation levels in North America.  The reactors in Japan continue to belch out more radioactive debris, and so it could eventually have some consequential effects even on the other side of the Pacific.

Also note, nothing here addresses the important issue of oranur effects, which is a general irritation of the atmospheric life-energy which cannot be shielded, but which typically creates a variety of biological reactions, including blue-glowing or blue-haze anomalies in the atmosphere surrounding the accident sites.  This can occur even in the absence of particle-detections, though typically is most acute right near to where the accident or incident.  Underground a-bomb tests created something of a global oranur reaction, however.  It requires very specialized equipment to detect, and we probably are the only facility in the Western half of the USA to monitor for that, given the controversy which surrounds the subject.  But so far there is nothing unusual happening there either.  For example we were recording up to 4000 cpm from high sunspot activity back in the mid-2000s, but throughout the entire period since the Japanese reactor accident, the oranur readings have never gotten higher than 800 cpm.  Again, those are not standard radiation counts.
And it is not clear to us how these instruments would react if we do get a clear fallout incident.  I only mention it because several persons have asked about this.

For more information on the oranur subject, please read the section on "The Oranur Experiment" by Dr. Wilhelm Reich, in his book Selected Writings.  That book is available in the "Wilhelm Reich" section of our on-line bookstore, along with another report on the oranur subject: Unusual Long-Distance Atmospheric and Geophysical Effects from Underground Nuclear Bomb Tests and Nuclear Power Plant Accidents: Suppressed Scientific Evidence.  See the "Radiation Hazards" section.  The new 2010 edition of my Orgone Accumulator Handbook also has an expanded discussion on these issues.

Update #6 on the Japanese Atomic Reactor Accident at Fukushima.

1.  Over the last week, no significant increases in radiation have been detected in the atmosphere or snow-rain samples as measured at the OBRL facility near to Ashland, Oregon. At present there are no elevated readings to be observed at our location.  Real-time monitoring of background radiation levels continues, recorded to computer so as to review trends, showing an approximate 20 cpm, with isolated transients between 5 to 40 cpm.  This is well within normal ranges.

2.  Snow-melt and rainwater samples are now routinely being tested with both NaI scintillation and GM detectors, inside a lead shield.  On one occasion, an anomalous set of readings were recorded that probably were the consequence of Fukushima radiation.  As noted in the prior Update #3, on the 19th of March, snow-melt was measured from the previous day's precipitation using a precision Ludlum 2200 Ratemeter/Scaler with 2" mica end-window GM probe.  The readings over that snow-melt sample were at 66 cpm, approximately doubled from the background of 32 cpm.  This amount of radiation was of concern, though still very "low level", and also very temporary in occurrence.  It was associated with a strong oranur reaction locally, as felt by several persons.  However, both the high GM count and the oranur reaction dissipated away within an hour or two after the initial measurements.  At first it was considered this was the consequence of some short-lived isotopes, but now we feel it might have been an effect of accumulated radon daughters dissolved in the water, which when it warmed, out-gassed and so was more readily detected at that exact moment, but not later when diffused in the open air.  Once the water reaches a stable temperature, the outgassing halts and readings go down, to resemble background radiation levels.

The date of this incident matches approximately with the time when UC Berkeley lab detected the first arrival of I-131 and other isotopes in local rain.

They considered the amounts inconsequential, and while I would not yet become alarmed about it, it does confirm at least a very brief exposure at our facility near Ashland, Oregon to some of the trace residues from Fukushima.  If that kind of thing became chronic, it would be of concern, but this was not the case.  It appears this radiation event was a downstream effect from one or more reactor explosions in Fukushima, Japan on or before March 16th, a time when the jet-stream was oriented nearly exactly West-->East moving fast across the Pacific Ocean.  With a jet stream moving at 100 mph, over one day it would move 2400 miles, or 4800 miles in two days.  Even considering some lag time for materials to be slowly transported up to the altitude of the jet-stream, this could have brought such radioactive materials to our West Coast USA location in short order.

3. There are several new radiation-detection networks which can be consulted:

A.  Radiation Detection Network for Japan

B.  Geiger Counter Bulletin
Includes information on the Terrestrial and Atmospheric Radiation Awareness Network (TARA Net) as well as for rdtn.org.  This network appears to be just getting started.

C. Weather Online's Radiation Tracker
Look at the upper right side of this webpage for links to tracking maps, plotting the hypothetical spread of radiation from Fukushima east across the Pacific.  You can adjust this to review the situation for Japan, for the USA, or for the entire Northern Hemisphere, and also detailing various radionuclies.  Be sure to read the cautionary statements about these products.  Especially the map for xenon emissions would wrongly lead one to believe the "end of the world".   Keep in mind the color-coding or color-intensity markings on these maps are somewhat arbitrary, determined by the computer programmer.  My advice is to consider them as relevant only for wind-direction and atmospheric mixing, given how they are based upon atmospheric computer modelling.  Nobody is out there measuring radiation levels in the air, and there is no satellite sensor doing this either.  They merely assume so much radiation into the air at Fukushima, then make estimates or assumptions (guesses) on how that radiation mixes in the air, and from there where it will go depending upon prevailing winds.  They may or may not assume the loss of radioactivity due to raining-out in storms, for example.  This is a problem with computer models, as they only show what you program them to show.  Compare these to the probelm of how the fastest and most powerful computers on Earth have difficulty predicting weather more than three days out.  A good weather forecaster using "old fashioned" observation can do a good job two days out.  And your Grandpa with arthritis in his leg can frequently do just about as good as, or better than either one.

4.  The radiation tracking networks previously recommended still are working away, and are among the best resources.  Here:

So long as these citizen-run networks show low levels across all those stations, one should not get panicked, in spite of some of the rather wild claims which are circulating on the conspiracy websites (ie, the chameleon Alex Jones and crew).  If a significant number of them begin showing regional readings at or above ~100 cpm even over one single day, even for just a few stations in the same region, then you can worry plenty.  However, throughout this entire critical situation, so far the only places on the planet which have shown such a situation are in Japan or within a short distance surrounding it.  People are rationally expressing concerns about radiation accumulation in the water, soils or food chain in North America, and that might eventually turn out to be of long-term consideration.  But right now that is not the case, and there also is a considerable irresponsible alarmism at work, often created by some of the same conspiracy websites which claim the earthquakes were "caused by HAARP" and the "Evil USA" (and which before the earthquake-disaster were preoccupied with "911 trutherism", "chemtrails", "international cabals", "illuminati", etc.).  A bit of skepticism towards both government and anti-government, and a lot of self-education on the issues surrounding low- and high-level radiation exposure, would appear to be the most healthy and productive path.  The only conspiracy at work in this entire matter has been the irresponsibility of the nuclear power plant vendors and operators, who have a long history of documented deceit, accidents, disasters, and cover-ups.  And as we see in Japan itself, these same people are going be put under the spotlight for what happened.   It appears very unlikely any new nuclear power plants will be constructed on planet Earth for the next 50 years.

If you don't own a geiger counter, now would be a decent time to consider a purchase, as part of the self-education process, though be prepared to wait for weeks or months for delivery, given the current high demand for these products.

5.  Based upon the continuing nature of these possible risk-exposures, OBRL will soon be obtaining specialized radiation detection instrumentation -- a gamma-energy NaI-scintillation spectrum analyzer with computer display and appropriate software -- allowing for determinations of specific radioisotopes in water, air, or other material samples.  The cost of this equipment is about $7,000 and we are asking for donations to help recover the costs to our limited budget.  If you can assist, please use the OBRL donation page, which also carries our contact information:

Preface:  Everything I report in Part I of this Update report is predicated upon conventional radiation biophysics.  The issue of the Oranur Effect - of irritation of the life-energy field of the planet and of living organisms - is another matter entirely.  I will give some discussion on this towards the end, with recommended reading, in Part II.

Part I: Radiation Measures at the OBRL Facility

1.  Open Air Readings.

Since our last Update in early April, no significant increases in radiation have been detected in the atmosphere or snow-rain samples as measured at the OBRL facility near to Ashland, Oregon.  Over this full period, there have been no detectable increases in the open-air readings at our location.  Real-time monitoring of background radiation levels continues, using a Radalert 100 GM counter (sensitive to x-ray, alpha, beta and gamma).  Data are recorded to computer every minute, so as to review trends.  Over this full period, since before any arrival of Fukushima radiations, these open-air readings have shown an average of 18 cpm, with isolated transients between 5 to 35 cpm.  This is well within normal ranges, and typical of what we have recorded here over many years, even before the Fukushima accident.  Over the last several months, there have been no discernable changes in these open air readings, even as some isolated and brief radiation anomalies have occurred in rainwater samples.

Below is a representative graphic showing the output of the computer recording system (Logger Pro from Vernier.com) over a representative period of 280 hours in April.  (The four isolated vertical lines going from top to bottom are reset-recalibration periods, and can be ignored.)

The Radalert 100 unit is shown and described here:

2.  Precipitation Readings

As noted previously Snow-melt and rainwater samples are also being routinely being tested at our facility.  This is being done with both an NaI crystal scintillation detector, and a 2-inch diameter "pancake" type of GM detector.  These sensors are mounted inside a sealed cylindrical lead shield into which the sample being measured is also placed.  The lead shielding reduces natural background radiation levels inside, allowing any radiation contamination in the rain water or snow-melt to be more easily detected.  The detector probes are powered by two separate Ludlum 2200 Ratemeter-Scalers, which allow for precise detector settings and evaluations. Each evaluation run typically lasts for 60 minutes, one hour, with a second control run also inside the lead shield, but without the rain-snow sample under evaluation.

This image shows our two Ludlum ratemeters (at right) with NaI and GM probes attached but contained inside a heavy lead-plate shield (at left).

The image below shows the interior of the lead shield, which fully surrounds the samples being evaluated.  A glass pitri dish for holding the rain-snow samples can be seen at the bottom, just below the detector probes.

As noted in several prior Update notices posted to our weblog (see the list and links at the bottom of this Update), using this system we have occasionally seen small temporary increases in the radiation counts within rainwater or snow-melt.  A prior Update report discussed a temporary anomalously high reading on our GM detectors on March 18th.  Since then, we have recorded additional radiation anomalies in rain-snow samples which fell on April 2 (an 8% increase in the NaI scintillator) and April 16-17 (a 4% increase in GM counts, and 21% increase in NaI scintillations).   On other rain-snow events, for April 1, 3, 5, 8, 15, 17, 22, 23, 25-26, and 28-29, there have been no detectable increases above natural background.  For April, which is when we began making these rain-snow measures more systematically, this suggests about one storm system in ten was bringing a bit of the Fukushima radiation with it.

However, in both of the cases in April, the radiation in these samples rapidly dissipated after a few hours, indicating the probability of temporary radon emissions due to outgassing, as the water was moved from the chilly outdoor environment, into the warmer laboratory room.  This was also the case for rainwater collected on March 18th, as previously described in a prior Update (see Appended weblinks below).

While this certainly gives some cause for continued monitoring, as does the ongoing crisis in Fukushima itself, it is not by itself such a large quantity of radiation to warrant alarm.  Nevertheless and unfortunately, for this kind of rain-snow evaluations, we have no pre-Fukushima baseline of measurements by which to compare them.  And this kind of evaluation, using simple count-rate measures using GM and NaI scintillators inside a lead shield, gives us no information by which to identify specific radionuclides, if any, that might be found in the water.  I am only speculating that the effects were due to radon contamination, based upon their quick disappearance.  If the rain-snow samples had been contaminated with something like radioactive Cesium or Iodine, which are known to have been discharged from the Fukushima reactors during the explosions, the measured radiation levels would have persisted over many days (for Iodine 131) or many years (for Cesium species), and not for only a few hours.

However, we have better instrumentation on order, where specific radioisotopes can be determined, and so some of this uncertainty will be removed in our future evaluations.

3.  Tentative Conclusions.

What tentative conclusions can be drawn from this?

Obviously, the readings at our Ashland, Oregon mountain-top constitute only one location, and measured readings from other regions are necessary to truly know just how much of the radioactive discharges from Fukushima are reaching across the Pacific Ocean.  The prior Updates give several excellent radiation-monitoring weblinks, and so far they also show similar results to what I give above:  Only occasional, temporary bursts of detectable radiation, but nothing which is persisting or widespread.

There are isolated and scattered reports of slightly elevated radiation levels in rains and milk, but these are so far typically isolated examples which appear, and then disappear just as quickly.  Nobody in North America is, to my knowledge, as yet detecting consistent, persisting and significant radiation increases as found in rains, soils, or milk - and from that one may legitimately conclude vegetable material would be safe.  In Hawaii, there have been a few periods of with reproducible or repetitive higher readings, but even there, it has not yet provoked any official alarms.  The same is true in Europe, even further removed from Fukushima, from our information, even while some internet sources are raising concerns.  While I cannot hope to monitor all of what is said or claimed on internet, what I have seen so far appears to be the result of confusions about how much radiation constitutes "significant levels", at least from the conventional viewpoint of orthodox radiation biophysics.  The issue of short-term versus long-term exposure levels are most frequently mixed up, or ignored.

For example, this alarming report came from Natural News, claiming "Fukushima radiation taints US milk supplies at levels 300% higher than EPA maximums".

The headline was alarmist, however, suggesting milk supplies across the USA were at risk from radiation contamination.  But this claim could not be justified by the measured data they were referencing.   The actual data sheets posted on-line and which constitute the core of their concerns showed, overwhelmingly, the absence of detectable radiation.  "Non-Detect" - nothing was detected, was the predominant report for the various radiation-monitoring stations.   In a few cases, very low levels in the fractions of a pico-curie per liter of water or milk (pc/l) was detected.  Or in a few cases, whole pico-curie amounts, from 1 to 24 pc/l, were detected.  Those came from Hilo Hawaii gathered on April 4th, and later on April 13th, here:
The dates of those two events are close enough to the April 2nd and 16-17th radiation anomalies detected at our facility to suggest a possible connection, resultant from Fukushima discharges.

Also see here for rainwater samples over the same period.

These higher readings are understandable given Hawaii's geographical location half-way from the USA to Japan.   But in both cases, at our facility, and also for Hawaii, the levels were not alarmingly high, and did not persist, nor were reflected in larger regional measures.   For example, if one compares the 24 pc/l of a few isotopes measured in Hawaii, to the EPA's long-term exposure limit of 3 pc/l, then it does appear alarming - but the EPA figure only merits a strict attention if those Hawaii readings were to persist over a year or longer.  So far, there is no indication this is the case.   By comparison to the FDA's short-term exposure limit of 33,000 pc/l,  the measured 24 pc/l from Hilo Hawaii, appearing only on two samples over several months, seems less of a problem.  The Natural News editors appear to have confused the issue of short-term versus long-term exposures.  This problem aside, I still have a much better trust in the Natural News as an information source, than the FDA or AMA for my information on health issues.  As one of my professor friends put it, "there are fewer errors of basic assumption in the literature sold in the average health-food store, than in the literature of the average medical school library".

The main thing to keep in mind here, is the measured levels from Hilo Hawaii, which are the highest levels so far detected outside of Japan (that I know about) are less than 1/1000th of that short-term level.  If all those stations reporting "Non-detect" had instead registered some kind of readings for most of the given dates, even at very "low levels", then indeed we would indeed have a major crisis on our hands.  But that is not the case, except for the people living in Japan.  Japan recently upgraded its nuclear disaster to "Level 7", equal to that of Chernobyl, so they really do have a major radiological crisis to deal with.

4.  Some Comparisons to Consider

My experiences with the Chinese atomic bomb fallout which hit Pennsylvania are also relevant, as described in the Update #5 posting.  In that situation, radiation recorded at the soil surface and in rains was about double that found in the open-air background.  In that case, nearly every station in the region was detecting considerable radiation, a doubling of background counts which persisted over weeks, and sales of milk were banned.

So far, here in North America, and in Hawaii and Europe as well, we are not even close to that critical situation.

Consequently, based upon these facts about measured radiation, I must weigh in against the calls for panic, with some cautious skepticism about what is circulating on internet.  Distance from the Fukushima reactors allows for dissipation or dilution, as well as for decay of activity level over time, plus the raining-out of radioactive aerosols or gasses. The greater this distance, the less are the effects going to be.  People in Japan are the primary ones at risk.  The rest of us are wise to keep aware and alert, but panic seems unjustified and unnecessary.

Review this for additional comparisons from the classical perspective:

Part II:  Oranur Effects

If you don't know what this term oranur is, then it is suggested to obtain the book Selected Writings by Wilhelm Reich, and review the chapter-section on "The Oranur Experiment".  This experiment demonstrated how small amounts of atomic radiation, even when shielded behind thick lead, could trigger a tangible and visible reaction in the atmosphere, which could in turn elicit strong biological reactions to people so exposed.  In his experiment, Reich placed a small quantity of nuclear material (far less than even in a fraction of an atomic fuel rod) inside a strong orgone accumulator, against which the orgone energy field (or life-energy field) of his laboratory and region reacted powerfully.  The laboratory room glowed bluish, people got sick, lab animals died, the atmosphere turned greyish, and radiation detectors reacted erratically.

Oranur had two aspects, one of which could be deadly if strong enough, and another which in milder doses could trigger a "healing crisis" and had curative powers.  Reich's work on "oranur medicine" as he called it, had hardly begun at the time when the FDA began its persecution of him, with the book-burning and so forth.   But it was clear, oranur is related in some unclear way with the principles of hormesis - of possibly life-beneficial effects from low-level nuclear radiation.  In such circumstances, people are not benefiting from the atomic radiation itself, but rather from the reaction of the life-energy field of the room or hot spring "radon waters" to which they are exposed.  This principle is typically abused by advocates of atomic energy, to falsely claim that isotopic contamination and higher radiation levels have "no effect", and of course rational criticisms then come from environmentalists who can show the increased mortality from low level radiation - but they then may irrationally dismiss hormesis as a real thing.  Neither side wishes to address Reich's findings, unfortunately.

Hormesis is a real effect nontheless, and appears based upon the oranur effect discovered by Reich.  A similar set of principles may also be at work in homeopathic medicine.  In the revised 2010 edition of my Orgone Accumulator Handbook, I discuss these issues in some detail.  (It is available from Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk.)

This is not the place to give a full discussion on these important issues, but I would also reference the many articles published in our journal Pulse of the Planet, which address very real and observed oranur effects which afflicted the USA and other parts of the world during the period of underground nuclear bomb tests, and as following the big accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl.  The articles in our journal back-issues are among the most clear and well-documented collection to be found on this matter.  We recently made some of them available to the public, as a free PDF download:

Unusual Long-Distance Atmospheric and Biological Effects from Atomic Bomb Tests and Nuclear Power Plant Accidents:
http://www.orgonelab.org/UnusualNuclearEffects.pdf

Especially of interest are the eye-witness reports made by people around TMI during the accident there, of an intensive blue-glowing atmosphere (seen also at Chernobyl and Fukushima) which are in full agreement with the observations of Dr. Reich during the oranur experiment he conducted.

From this kind of evidence, even with low levels of marginally detectable atomic radiation as we are seeing in Hawaii and North America, we may anticipate some unknown level of increased atmospheric and biological agitation.  Certainly this already is the case in Japan near to Fukushima, but it is unclear how far and widespread this might go.  This would appear as a flaring up of skin conditions, the temporary appearance of old health issues, or a flaring of people's emotions.  It can also appear as a general increase in human energy level, along with other mild biological reactions or symptoms as detailed in the above PDF document.  With mild or severe oranur, some of these reactions will be irritating or life-negative in nature, while at lower intensities, some of the reactions may be life-positive.  We can speculate, for example, that the 1986 accident at Chernobyl put enough diluted oranur-irritating radiation into the atmosphere of that region such that, aside from the clear biological damages, it also stimulated a biological reactivity towards heightened activity and increased energy level.  And so within a few short years people had increasingly stood up to repressive communism, tore down the Berlin wall, threw out the Communist Party killers and reorganized their societies along more healthy directions.  Reich likened oranur to a raging lion, which then tries to smash out of whatever cages are thrust upon it. The normal quiet and relaxed, slow and mellow condition of the orgone continuum turns towards a frantic and highly irritated condition.

In the present circumstances, we cannot yet draw any parallels from the Fukushima catastrophe to the social reactions which developed in East Europe and Russia after Chernobyl.  Japan is already a very free society, so one does not anticipate rebellions against authoritarianism there.  However, this may eventually affect mainland China, a repressive and murderous communist dictatorship.  The current spate of rebellions against Muslim dictators was already going at least two months before the Fukushima accident, so that cannot be attributed to it.  And in any case, the Islamic uprisings are only partly freedom-directed. The major component of that social unrest is Emotional Plague plotters who wish merely to construct a better and even more constraining social cage, in keeping with radical Islamic demands.  It seems doomed to merely change the old dictators for newer, more dangerous ones.  "Meet the new boss, same as (or worse than) the old boss".  But we have also seen incredible atmospheric reactions which might be related to Fukushima: the massive drought-wildfires across Texas, and the geographically-connected historical outbreak of killer tornadoes in the USA, which wreaked havoc across large areas of the American South only a few days ago.  Even here, caution is necessary for our interpretations, given how wildfires and other very severe tornado outbreaks occurred as far as back as records have been kept, well before the era of atomic power or bomb-testing.  But these are interesting correlations, nonetheless.

Be aware also, Reich's experiments with laboratory mice charged up inside the orgone accumulator showed they withstood the toxic effects of atomic radiation better than control mice.  So if you are concerned about atomic radiation exposure, then moving towards a diet, lifestyle and environment of more healthy life-energy charge and quality is the best guarantor of health.  See Reich's books, and my Handbook for details.

Thanks, finally, to all those who sent informative articles, and contributed towards purchase of our forthcoming radiation-detection instrumentation.  We are still down about $5000 on that, for those who can afford to donate (see here).

New Articles on Orgonomic Science

A few months ago, an announcement went out for two of my recently-published articles on orgone biophysics, one being available as a free PDF download.  These included one item in Edge Science, a publication of the Society for Scientific Exploration, and was available as a free PDF download directly from their website.  The other was available with a subscription to the journal Subtle Energies, a peer-reviewed publication of the ISSSEEM organization.

My thanks once again to the editors of both those publications for their kind invitation to submit my work, as well as to Dr. Richard Blasband, who helped open doors in both cases.

Today, these articles are available for direct PDF-download:

EXPERIMENTAL CONFIRMATION OF THE REICH ORGONE
ACCUMULATOR THERMAL ANOMALY
Subtle Energies Vol.20, No.3, p.17-32
Abstract
Experimental investigations were undertaken by the author, of the thermal anomaly (To-T) inside the orgone energy accumulator (ORAC), a phenomenon firstly observed by the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich, who invented the ORAC device. This thermal anomaly, by the theory of Reich, is produced from the rarified motional-pulsating orgone energy continuum which is concentrated inside the ORAC, producing a frictional thermal heating of the air. Discussion is given on the experimental proofs standing behind Reich's theory and claims, drawing attention to similar concepts in the modern sciences. The orgone energy is similar in many respects to the older luminiferous cosmic ether in that it fills all space, but also fulfills the role of an atmospheric-biological life-energy, in that it is pulsatory and excitable, and charges living tissues. In the To-T experiment, air temperature was measured inside the upper part of a 10 cm cubical ORAC, and contrasted to the temperature within a thermally-balanced but non-orgone-accumulating Control enclosure, following the protocols of Reich. Exceptional care was taken in the construction of the apparatus and in control procedures, with instrumentation calibrated down to ~0.002°C. The experiment was undertaken in a well-ventilated but fully dark-shaded outdoor thermal shelter specially constructed for the evaluations. Under the optimal conditions for ORAC functioning (i.e., low humidity, light or no winds, clear skies), a cyclical positive thermal anomaly was systematically detected, with an average of +0.13°C differential in two 10-day experimental runs presented here, with maxima peaking daily around +0.5°C warmer than the Control, and minima at around -0.1°C. The experiments confirmed Reich's claims of a slight spontaneous heating effect inside the ORAC, which has no known energy source by classical "empty space" determinations.

Following the Red Thread of
Wilhelm Reich: A Personal Adventure
Edge Science 5, October-December 2010, p.11-16.
I read Dr. Wilhelm Reich's book, Selected Writings, when still an undergraduate student, and found it both exciting and stunning. I could hardly put it down. The book outlined an entire set of new discoveries, ranging from the biology of sexuality, to emotions and cancer, and hence into biophysics, atmospheric science, and cosmology. With amazement, I learned his books had been banned and burned, first in Europe, then later by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which also engineered Reich's death in prison. This only fed my curiosity.  Only scientists of historical significance suffered such a fate. His life-energy science, called orgonomy-after the orgone energy he discovered-offered so many hopeful developments for a suffering humanity. I could not rest easy without knowing for certain: Was it true? Or not? And so I followed the red thread Reich left behind, as in the myth of Ariadne in the Labyrinth, following wherever it led. ... (go to the weblink for the full article)

Two of my other publications will soon appear.  One is a chapter in a new book on Gravitation, edited by Prof. Hector Munera as a memoir to the late Nobel Prize winner Maurice Allais.  My contribution to that book details Prof. Dayton Miller's experimental work, and that of others detecting the cosmic ether of space, which was important to the physics theories and pendulum experiments of Dr. Allais.  Some may recall, one of Dr. Allais' articles appeared in the #5 issue of our own journal Pulse of the Planet.  Overall, the resurgence of interest in the cosmic ether of space by some elements of modern astrophysics, provides an important conceptual support to the findings of Reich, and to my own work generally.

Another large paper of mine also has cleared peer-review for a mainstream journal on the physical chemistry and biology of water, discussing the relationship of Reich's orgone energy discoveries to unresolved questions in biology and physics, on water structure and activation, as well as to related astrophysical questions on the "blueness" of cosmic space "dark matter" and related topics.

Both of these publications these will be announced with appropriate access or purchase links, once they become available.

All of these publications are appearing outside of the usual orgonomy journals, several are mainstream and peer-reviewed, and all were invited papers - meaning, the editors invited the submissions, based upon my prior publications and lectures.  This reflects a growing appreciation for serious orgonomic research within at least some branches of mainstream science, and a significant thawing-out of the prior situation (known from personal experience) where the mere mention of "Wilhelm Reich" or "orgone energy" as a citation within a scientific paper would doom it to immediate rejection.

Subject: Interesting New Science

In one of my earliest publications, I cited controversial works by Anderson and Spangler, and others, regarding anomalous variations in radioactive decay-rate "constants".  In the last few years, there have been many new findings published on this same phenomenon, showing correlated changes in nuclear decay processes with solar activity.  They are suggestive of changes in the background orgone energy ocean which triggers changes in both solar activity and nuclear decay rates.  Below are mentioned some other things, also newly published, suggesting associated gravitational aspects.  The cyclical variations also appear to have a correlation to the Reich cosmic superimposition and Piccardi chemical test variations, which are themselves related to spiral-form motion of the Earth through the cosmos.  The arguments are made by the classical scientists based upon Earth-Sun distances within the model of flat elliptical planetary orbits, but the perihelion-aphelion factors of Earth orbit (viewed two-dimensionally) does have an inseparable systematic correlation to the spiral-form motions as described by Reich and Piccardi.

Following below are download links and abstracts.

The last item below requires a subscription to get the original item, but I found these interesting PDF-Powerpoints by the various authors:

The first of these PDF-Powerpoint items has a reference page with additional active weblinks to download papers on the subject.

I should also mention, the orgone-charged neutron counter experiments underway here at OBRL, described occasionally in the various OBRL Newsletters, not only fully supports Reich, but also provides a line of argumentation for evidence on the mechanism of these decay-constant variations as noted in the different experiments.  The idea of the orgone accumulator trapping and increasing this same fundamental cosmic force which affects nuclear decay processes, is still quite a bit advanced beyond the classical thinking which notes the very real correlations, but attributes these quite substantial effects to contradictory neutrino effects, or to an ill-defined "quantum" something, to explain them.  The most obvious mechanism of these effects, of a determining ocean of energy similar to Reich's orgone, Piccardi's cosmic environmental factors, or Miller's ether-drift, is still something of a taboo.

Meanwhile, a new book edited by Hector Munera of the University of Bogota, Should the Laws of Gravitation Be Reconsidered carries additional papers on this subject, including anomalous pendulum experiments reminiscent of Reich (but which take entirely different approaches).  My paper on the Miller ether-drift experiments is also included.

All of these lines of classical science converge towards the same common point, that "empty space" has something of significant energy within it, which interacts with matter in a far more systematic manner than ill-defined neutrinos or quantum unrealities.  At some point, given the motional dynamics of the Earth-Sun system, there should be some consideration that these variations in radioactive decay, and of physical pendulum motions, like the variations of the "dark matter wind", are the product of variable speed of the Earth through the background of space, and the variable excitation or charge of this energy which develops as a consequence.  But a "cosmic background" composed of what, exactly?  That is where Reich's work, and the orgone energy, will become at issue for every rational natural scientist, assuming they have the opportunity to learn about Reich's prior experimental work, and don't kill it once more for another 100 years.

Thanks to Patrice Okouma for providing the weblinks below, and stimulating a discussion on the matter.

Analysis of Experiments Exhibiting Time-Varying Nuclear Decay Rates: Systematic Effects or New Physics?

Authors: Jere H. Jenkins, Ephraim Fischbach, Peter A. Sturrock, Daniel W. Mundy

Abstract: Since the 1930s, and with very few exceptions, it has been assumed that the process of radioactive decay is a random process, unaffected by the environment in which the decaying nucleus resides. There have been instances within the past few decades, however, where changes in the chemical environment or physical environment brought about small changes in the decay rates. But even in light of these instances, decaying nuclei that were undisturbed or un-"pressured" were thought to behave in the expected random way, subject to the normal decay probabilities which are specific to each nuclide. Moreover, any "non-random" behavior was assumed automatically to be the fault of the detection systems, the environment surrounding the detectors, or changes in the background radiation to which the detector was exposed. Recently, however, evidence has emerged from a variety of sources, including measurements taken by independent groups at Brookhaven National Laboratory, Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, and Purdue University, that indicate there may in fact be an influence that is altering nuclear decay rates, albeit at levels on the order of $10^{-3}$. In this paper, we will discuss some of these results, and examine the evidence pointing to the conclusion that the intrinsic decay process is being affected by a solar influence.

Further Evidence Suggestive of a Solar Influence on Nuclear Decay Rates

Authors: Peter A. Sturrock, Ephraim Fischbach, Jere H. Jenkins

Abstract: Recent analyses of nuclear decay data show evidence of variations suggestive of a solar influence. Analyses of datasets acquired at the Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and at the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) both show evidence of an annual periodicity and of periodicities with sidereal frequencies in the neighborhood of 12.25 year^{-1} (at a significance level that we have estimated to be 10^{-17}). It is notable that this implied rotation rate is lower than that attributed to the solar radiative zone, suggestive of a slowly rotating solar core. This leads us to hypothesize that there may be an "inner tachocline" separating the core from the radiative zone, analogous to the "outer tachocline" that separates the radiative zone from the convection zone. The Rieger periodicity (which has a period of about 154 days, corresponding to a frequency of 2.37 year^{-1}) may be attributed to an r-mode oscillation with spherical-harmonic indices l=3, m=1, located in the outer tachocline. This suggests that we may test the hypothesis of a solar influence on nuclear decay rates by searching BNL and PTB data for evidence of a "Rieger-like" r-mode oscillation, with l=3, m=1, in the inner tachocline. The appropriate search band for such an oscillation is estimated to be 2.00-2.28 year^{-1}. We find, in both datasets, strong evidence of a periodicity at 2.11 year^{-1}. We estimate that the probability of obtaining these results by chance is 10^{-12}.

For those following the ether-drift experiments, or other anomalies suggestive of an energy in cosmic space (such as anomalies in the behavior of pendulums as during solar or lunar eclipses), there is a new book available presenting important new information.

Should the Laws of Gravitation Be Reconsidered?
The Scientific Legacy of Maurice Allais.
Edited by Héctor A. Múnera

Papers include experimental works and discussions on various ether-drift experiments, including that of Dayton Miller, along with papers by Allais and others on systematic variations in the behavior of paraconical and stationary pendula. Other physical anomalies are detailed, such as within fiber-optic and radio-frequency interferometry, and other subjects not give the attention they deserve with mainstream scientific circles, though most all of the contributors are classically-trained natural scientists, professors and so forth. At nearly 450 pages with 33 separate contributions by nearly as many professional natural scientists (including one by yours truly), this work is one of the most powerful documentations of physical anomalies which indicate the existence of a cosmic ether in space, as has yet been published.

A full description and Table of Contents is given here:

Available from Amazon.com here:

The relevance to the work of Wilhelm Reich should be obvious here, given the similarities between the cosmic ether of space and the orgone energy.   While not exactingly identical, modern physics will have to return to some kind of older principle of energy-in-space before it could move towards an idea like the cosmic orgone (albeit the orgone energy also has living qualities not currently recognized in the context of any "dead" ether).

Subject: Outrageous New Smears Against Wilhelm Reich

Brit Author to Educate the Unwashed Peasants in New York City on June 27-28.

There is a new collection of smear-attacks against Wilhelm Reich, targeting his life, loves, biography, and experimental work, across the board, and using the worst of emotional plague tactics one could imagine.  Outright lies, lies of omission, sexual slander, you name it.

These assaults came to my attention in a recent book-review article in the on-line version of the Wall Street Journal, "Thinking Inside the Box: Why some of America's most prominent minds fell for the wildly eccentric ideas of Wilhelm Reich", by one Henry Allen. The article reviews the book "Adventures in the Orgasmatron: How the Sexual Revolution Came to America" by Christopher Turner

The Allen article dutifully reports on what's in the Turner book, as do the other reviews I mention below.  That web-article allows for reader comments, and I left one (#30) in the manner of a personal professional testimonial. I'd encourage everyone else who knows Reich's biography to also leave comments, after reading it.

I hesitate to even mention this review and the book, not wishing to draw attention to it.  But the book and additional reviews repeating its nasty smears and lies are cropping up (like mushrooms on horse manure) across internet and in print-media.  The Google search engine showed 30,000 links for the phrase "Adventures in the Orgasmatron" yesterday, but nearly 80,000 links today.  A few days back, the "Orgasmatron" book was ranked at around 200,000 in the Amazon selling list.  This AM it was at 123,000, and this PM it is now at 57,000.

This phenomenal growth has come from additional smear-article "reviews" which just appeared today in the print edition of the San Francisco Chronicle, and also on Slate.com, a popular news-commentary website.

The SF Chronicle "review" by one Michael Washburn is currently only in their print-paper edition, but will appear in their on-line edition on Tuesday, here:
From friends who have read the "review" it is pure smut, sexual slander and worse, all rolled into one ugly mud-merde-ball.

The Slate.com item by one Peter Kramer is already available:
"The Great Proselytizer of Orgasm:  A new book explores the highly peculiar legacy of Wilhelm Reich."
This one also contains the same smut and salacious sexual slander.

You can also leave comments on most all of these websites.

Christoper Turner, author of the Orgasmatron book and lead comedian for this troop of vicious clowns, is scheduled to come to New York City in the next day or two, flying over from his UK homeland to give public lectures among the American natives, to "educate" the unwashed peasants about his new slanders of WR.  His sponsors have even advertised the events, hoping it will bring them fame and glory as well.  So I hope everyone living in the NYC area who has a good feeling for Reich's work, who has benefited from Reich's discoveries either as professional or layperson, will go to these events and give Mr. Turner a nice warm welcome.  Let him know, openly and with full voice, just what you think of his new book!   Certainly he does not hold back on creative self-expression, so the favor ought to be returned.

If I didn't live on the West Coast, I would go myself.

New Articles and Book Chapter by James DeMeo, PhD

Several of my articles have recently been recently published, including within mainstream peer-reviewed science journals and books, on the subject of orgone biophysics or the cosmic ether of space.  Also a few popular-magazine articles, in Korean translations.

Here are the details and background info:

James DeMeo: "Water as a Resonant Medium for Unusual External Environmental Factors", Water: A Multidisciplinary Research Journal, p.1-47, 2011.
PDF download or on-line viewing available:
http://www.waterjournal.org/volume-3

This is a major new paper of nearly 50 pages, which integrates a lot of materials.  Notably the subject includes materials from Wilhlem Reich on orgone energy fields, Giorgio Piccardi on cosmic fluctuating phenomenon, Dayton Miller on the cosmic ether of space, with discussions also including the works of Viktor Schauberger, Frank Brown, Bjorn Nordenstrom and many others.  This publication came about when I was asked to make a submission on these subjects.

The scientists who compose the editorial board and working group behind this Water journal have detected what they call an "exclusion zone" energy field effect along the surfaces of cells and high dielectric materials, in which water structure is "spontaneously" organized to a high level.   However, they cannot say just what is causing the "water structuring".  Typical molecular interface theory suggests, by electrostatic forces primarily, layers of long-chain structured water molecules would be clinging to the outside surfaces of cellular membranes, on the order of maybe 100 molecules thick.  Instead, they are observing such layers of highly structured water in tens of thousands of molecules thick, so that they can be directly observed in a microscope.  The observations show, small particulates freely moving in the water refuse to migrate towards the edges of those membranes or surfaces, are are repulsed from this "exclusion zone".  There is a repulsive force, barring the intrusion of all particulate material, associated with an increased viscosity of the water in that zone where the exclusion of particles takes place.  Hence the term "exclusion zone" or "EZ water".

From this, one of the principal scientists involved in this work became interested in Wilhelm Reich's ideas of a life-energy field surrounding living creatures, and in my own work confirming Reich on these subjects.  A current research project underway at OBRL on water structure using spectrographic analysis also came to the attention of this working group.  I was asked to present a paper at their Fourth Annual Conference on the Physics, Chemistry and Biology of Water, in 2009 at Mount Snow in Vermont, an event which is described here:
and here:

Following this event, I was invited to provide a contribution to their journal, which was done.  The conference was filled with top scientists from universities and research establishments, from around the world, many of whom spontaneously expressed to me during the free discussion periods their admiration for Reich.  Though in a few cases, they also expressed a fear to be open about this among their colleagues.

Part of the reason why I go into these details is to correct the mis-impression that the work of Wilhelm Reich, and his ideas about orgone energy, have no standing or interest within the world of classical mainstream science.  This isn't true, and the above (and following) examples are only a few which could be made to reinforce this point.

Another paper of mine was invited to be included in a new collected work on the questions of cosmic ether and gravitational anomalies:

This is a fascinating new collection which includes papers on anomalous pendulum behavior and other physics experiments which are inexplicable from the viewpoint of both Einstein's relativity theory, and the "Big Bang" creationist theory so popular today - and which threatens to throw science back to the Middle Ages, when divine revelation, priests and the Book of Genesis were consulted about life and cosmology.

I can also announce the following paper published in 2010 is now available as a PDF download:

James DeMeo: "Experimental Confirmation of the Reich Orgone Accumulator Thermal Anomaly", Subtle Energies, 20(3):1-16, 2010.
PDF download available:
http://www.orgonelab.org/DeMeoToTSubtleEnergies.pdf

This paper gives a preliminary discussion of an automated and To-T experiment, with a very tight protocol for eliminating all known classical thermodynamic objections, and whereupon the thermal anomaly still persisted, verifying Reich on all the central points, but also showing new aspects which were previously not apparent.

And finally, a Korean popular magazine has translated (into Korean) and published some of my materials, including an interview which transpired during my presentation to a Conference on Space-Energy in 2010.

* Interview with James DeMeo (Korean), in Here Now Journal, 16-1, p.172-184, 2011.

* Selections from the Orgone Accumulator Handbook (Korean), in Here Now Journal, 16-2, p.144-156 and 16-3, p.73-86, 2011.

* "Saharasia" (Korean), in Here Now Journal, 16-2, p.70-97, 2011.

I cannot read Korean, but am told this journal can be obtained via the following website:

The malicious book of C. Turner continues to spread poison internationally, notably in many "book review" articles with the common theme of attacking the name and work of Wilhelm Reich.  I won't mention most of them, as it would only give additional publicity to what are fantastically wretched distortions and defamatory lies.  All are within the mainstream media.  But, most people with a brain have come to expect that sort of thing from the MSM, distortions and lies on a host of critical issues, which is why subscription numbers for most of them are falling like a rock.

Below is a letter I wrote to The Economist, following their unfortunate contribution to the public stoning.

Sex research in America
From here to eternity
When the United States thought sex was as dangerous as communism

...

To which, James DeMeo wrote in the comment section:
Jul 15th 2011 5:55 GMT
Mr. Turner's book is a profound distortion of the facts regarding Dr. Wilhelm Reich's ideas and discoveries. The "orgasmatron" title and naked woman book-cover should inform that it is un-serious tabloid Yellow Journalism. Turner's description of Reich as "arrogant, influential, tyrannical and abusive" and irresponsibly quoted in the Economist, is false on nearly every account, as is most else in the book. Turner had to rely upon gossip and rumor to make his case, and then censor out all contrary opinion as found openly detailed in authentic biographies such as Sharaf's "Fury on Earth". Compared to the explosive popularity of Kinsey, Reich was but a footnote. And indeed, Kinsey gave him only one footnote, dismissing Reich's emphasis for the necessity of tenderness and love to achieve a full orgasm, as for Kinsey, it was all a matter of hormonal fluid discharges, and it didn't matter too much about how that was accomplished. Kinsey was in fact the true author of the progressive sexual rebellion, though many distorted Reich's ideas to their own ends. Reich opposed the legal stranglehold the Church held over family law in his day, but also wrote about people's emotional misery, the multiple unplanned pregnancies, abandoned children, bad marriages, the need for contraception, equal rights for women, the importance of gentle childbirth and breastfeeding, and the cruelty of circumcision. He vehemently opposed pornography and pedophilia, and considered homosexuality to be a neurosis. The "progressives" oppose Reich, or care not, on most of that agenda. But what better way to destroy Reich's name and work, than by defaming him to have approved of exactly the pathology he opposed?

Reich was anti-pornography, so they call him a pornographer pushing "polymorphous perversity" (a la Marcuse). He was a Marxist in youth, joining the Communist Party, but the CP shortly threw him out, finding his pro-freedom ideas, and open criticisms of the CP leadership to be intolerable (he was then put on an NKVD death-list). Like so many modern conservatives who also started out as youthful Marxists, Reich became anti-communist after c.1932. But no matter, his critics will claim he was a Marxist-communist radical, member of the "Frankfurt group" (which he never belonged or contributed to), and blame him for the excesses of the 1960s. He was of Jewish background, and publicly exposed the sexual perversions of the Nazi leadership, getting on their death-lists - but some will hint, he might have also been Nazi-sympathetic (another lie). The psychoanalytic organizations threw him out for deviating from strict Freudianism around the same time they were asking Jewish members to resign, to better "get along" with Herr Hitler! "Reich is dangerous", "Reich is crazy", "Reich is a pervert", they whispered. Burn the Witch!

Also, Reich's orgone accumulator was never promoted as a "sex-box", a dirty-minded claim fabricated his 1950s detractors, incessantly repeated today. Factually, the accumulator is an authentic scientific discovery, of great importance for medicine and science, and his orgone energy phenomenon is somewhat analogous to the modern "intergalactic media" or "cosmic plasma" of modern astrophysics, except that Reich determined a way to concentrate it for study, within his accumulators. They are composed of specific ferromagnetic and high-dielectric materials layered in an exacting manner such that it resembles a "hollow capacitor" or a Faraday cage. It has clear biological influences as verified by controlled scientific experiments, showing for example it has health benefits, can boost plant growth by 40%, and extend the lifespan of cancer mice by from 50% to 300% of control groups.

Published studies as undertaken by professional scientists and physicians are easily available by internet search - "Saharasia", "The Orgone Accumulator Handbook", "Heretic's Notebook", "On Wilhelm Reich and Orgonomy" for example - but books supporting Reich never get such public reviews. Besides, look how better the mainstream sales go when tossing around Woody Allen's silly concoctions, and naked-women cartoons! Besides, Reich is dead and cannot sue for defamation!

Reich is the guy whom everyone loves to hate. The Communists and Nazis both wanted him dead. The Psychoanalysts and psychiatrists hated his guts. The FDA thugs - who today use SWAT teams to smash up vitamin pill doctors, homeopaths and raw-milk farmers - took up the persecution and then lied to the US Courts to get its way. McCarthy had nothing to do with it. His books were banned and literally burned in incinerators by the ton, and he was railroaded into prison. One might question, 60 years after his death, why all the "people who matter" (mostly media leftists) are obsessed to heap filth upon his grave, to dig up his bones for yet another round of public abuse.

What: "The True Story of a Court-Ordered Book Burning in America" presented by Kevin Hinchey, Asst. Director, Wilhelm Reich Museum http://www.wilhelmreichtrust.org/

When: 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 24, 2011

Where: Monroe Township Public Library, 4 Municipal Plaza, Monroe Twp., NJ  08831

Details:
Banned Books Week is an annual event sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment.  Held during the last week of September (September 24 - October 1, 2011), Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted banning of books across the United States.

In 1956, six tons of books and research journals by Wilhelm Reich, M.D., a prominent Austrian physician and scientist who had immigrated to America four days before the outbreak of WWII, were burned by order of a Federal Court injunction. In this lecture, Kevin Hinchey, Assistant Director of the Wilhelm Reich Museum, will trace the dramatic events that culminated in what was one of the most heinous examples of censorship in American history.

A graduate of Fairfield University and New York University Graduate Film School, Mr. Hinchey has worked as a film writer in New York and Los Angeles and as a film professor in Massachusetts and Connecticut.  He is a member of the Writers Guild of America (West).  Since 2002, he has been on the Board of Directors of The Wilhelm Reich Infant Trust in Rangeley, Maine which operates the Wilhelm Reich Museum (of which he serves as assistant director).   Mr. Hinchey has authored a screenplay for a feature film about Reich, and is currently writing the script for a full-length documentary film about Reich.

Free tickets for this lecture are available at the Welcome Desk.

Several subscribers to OBRL-News have asked why there have not been
any postings in the last months. The reason is simply, free time is
scarce at the moment, and this is typically the case over the Summer
months. For example, over just the last several months I organized a
weekend seminar at OBRL, and right now am in the middle of a series
of interesting experiments on orgone-charged water spectroscopy, and
an in-depth replication of Wilhelm Reich's electroscopical discharge
rate experiments, using automated equipment. Additional good
corroborations are being made of Reich's old findings, with many new
findings as well. Earlier this year, I published several major
papers (see prior OBRL-News discussions for details) and these have
stimulated much positive interest, and new scientific correspondence.
See here for the paper listings:
http://www.orgonelab.org/demeopubs.htm

Also I am preparing for a presentation at a mainstream science
conference, where orgone energy research will be openly discussed.
We have also recently completed the basic construction of a new
solar-heat/greenhouse system onto the south side of the OBRL
laboratory structure, to reduce the wintertime fuel costs, a task
that is nearly completed. All this, in addition to our usual tasks
of running the bookstore, preparing new publications, and gathering
dead wood from the property for our Winter wood stove fuel. And so on.

Sometime before the end of the year, a new OBRL Newsletter will be
developed to update all of our recent work activities with some
detail and photos. In the meantime, review the OBRL-Links page, to
get a sense of the kind of resources we typically consult, and where
the materials for those postings are typically found:

Dear friends and supporters of my work, and of the OBRL.

The last several months have been so busy as to make any kind of update postings quite impossible.  Soon, however, I will be sharing the following:

1.  A new OBRL Newsletter, sometime in early December, which will elaborate on all of the items mentioned below, plus more.  For those who are new to the subscriber lists, you can access the older OBRL Newsletters without charge from this weblink:

2.  A new YouTube video posting, detailing some of my work experimentally reproducing a few of the basic bion-biogenesis experiments of Wilhelm Reich.  Over the coming months, I will be posting up new YouTubes of my past lecture slide presentations, which carry a lot of new information on the progress of scientific work at OBRL.  Again, if you are new, check out our past YouTube videos and related favorites here:

3.  An update on several of my new publications, both scientific articles and books.  This one appears quite a favorite:
Click on the PDF symbol at that site for a full download copy of the article, easy to share.

4.  New experimental findings from OBRL, notably the discovery of an increase in the UV spectral absorption of water which is charged up inside an orgone accumulator.  This effect was tested out using new spectroscopical equipment and methods starting in mid-2011.  Little has been made public on this as yet, so watch for more info in the forthcoming OBRL Newsletter.

5. An update on the incredible new and vicious smear attacks against Wilhelm Reich's personal biography and research, as appearing in a new book and spate of copy-cat "review" articles repeating the lies and distortions contained within it, or amplifying upon them.  In addition, a malicious set of new smears came out on UK television, around the same time.  It appears to be an orchestrated attack on many levels.   And it all comes at the very same time as important new findings in experimental orgonomy are being published, detailing important new and novel verifications of Reich's orgone biophysical findings.  Here's one pre-publication review article you can download now, to get a sense of the problem:

6.  And finally, a little bit of shameless promotion:

This Christmas season, if you are looking for a relatively economical gift for your friends, relatives and especially younger students in your circle, it is suggested to give them books.  Specifically any of the important scientific works offered via the OBRL on-line bookstore, here:

My work Saharasia continues to stir up unrest among the politically corrected castrati, who act like barn-yard chickens gabbling their denial that anything exists outside the barn-yard.  And the new 2010 edition of The Orgone Accumulator Handbook is quite a bit expanded over the older version.  I've heard several in the FDA suffered heart-attacks upon reading it.  You may want to get both for yourself, in addition as gifts, if you haven't already.  And of course, there's always the original works of Reich, which lay the foundations for my own findings.  Just about everything offered at our on-line bookstore website is guaranteed to separate out the sheeps from the goats, and to make life more interesting, healthy, alive and vital.

Mention this email when purchasing and we'll knock off 5% of the total order.  For those who live outside of the USA, we now have overseas distributors for our titles, so please firstly check on them by doing an author-name search at your favorite local on-line bookstore, as that can save you a lot on shipping costs from the USA.

Good books for critical times, and with a lasting value.

Until Later....

WILHELM REICH'S BION-BIOGENESIS DISCOVERIES - EXPERIMENTAL VERIFICATION

---->www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PVnS72IIY8

This item duplicates one of my PowerPoint lecture presentations, as given to the Second International Symposium on Pleomorphic Microbes in Health and Disease, held in Ashland, Oregon in October of 2000.   It is being made available in the manner of public education, and a corrective against the spate of horrible mainstream media publications over the last months, lying about the biography and research findings of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich.  Several of my other PowerPoint lectures will be converted into YouTube presentations, in a similar manner over the coming months.

When viewed at the YouTube website, control features are provided to allow for 360p, 480p or 720p viewing. From experiences here, the 480p with an expanded viewing window seems best, as the 720p yields a jerky quality in some of the transitions and video sequences of moving microbes. If you have a very fast broadband connection, this problem might not be present.

Please share the above YouTube weblink. The video is also available for embedding into your own website by using the "Share" and then "Embed" buttons at the bottom of the YouTube-page viewing window.

Regarding the recent #24 issue of the OBRL Newsletter, just announced yesterday, a major error was noted this evening, in that we failed to include point No.7 in it.  That point was quite important, dealing with the recent spate of yellow-journalism smear attacks in the mainstream media against Dr. Reich and orgonomy.  The corrected version with that essential point was just posted to our internet server.  If you already downloaded it, please discard the version you now have, and download the new one, using the same weblinks as before.

ANNOUNCING

16-17 March 2012

Lecture and Seminar in Munich, Germany, on the subject of:

New Research Supporting
Wilhelm Reich's Scientific Discoveries

During the period from the 1920s through the 1950s, Dr. Wilhelm Reich followed a path of scientific discovery which remains of vital importance to the modern world. Protégé of Sigmund Freud, therapeutic innovator, social reformer and anti-fascist freedom fighter, researcher into the bioelectric nature of emotion and sexuality, investigator of cancer biophysics and the origins of life, discoverer of a specific life energy, the controversial orgone, and inventor of the orgone energy accumulator, developer of an apparatus to trigger rains in droughty or desert regions - Reich's findings attracted at least as much antipathy and irrational opposition as open inquiry. He was attacked with equal fury by the European Nazis and Communist Party, and later by American communists, psychiatrists and the US Food and Drug Administration; his books were banned and burned on both continents, and he died in prison. The popular mainstream media of Reich's day spread vicious slander and defamation about him, leading to the alarming and unethical measures of censorship and book-burning. A widespread public misrepresentation of his work continues today. Factually, Reich's findings have been repeatedly confirmed and validated by independent scientists and clinicians over the decades, with discoveries that threaten many modern-day theorems and protected enclaves within science and medicine.

Dr. James DeMeo is one of several American scientists who have personally made experimental investigations of Reich's work since 1970, with positive proofs for many of Reich's discoveries. He is author of many books and articles on the subject, to include Saharasia, The Orgone Accumulator Handbook, as editor of Heretic's Notebook and On Wilhelm Reich and Orgonomy, and co-editor of Nach Reich: Neue Forschungen zur Orgonomie.  DeMeo will present one evening lecture and two half-day seminars on these subjects.

James DeMeo formally studied the Earth, atmospheric, and environmental/social sciences at Florida International University and the University of Kansas, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1986. At KU, he openly undertook graduate-level natural scientific research specifically focused upon Wilhelm Reich's controversial discoveries, subjecting those ideas to rigorous testing with positive verification of the original findings. DeMeo has undertaken field research in the arid American Southwest, Egypt, Israel, sub-Saharan Eritrea, and Namibia, Africa.  DeMeo served on the Faculty of Geography at Illinois State University and the University of Miami. Aside from his research in orgonomy, DeMeo is known for his work on renewable energy systems (solar and wind power), historical and theoretical work on modern science controversies such as the issue of the cosmic ether-drift, the presence of an early peaceful period in human prehistory, and pre-Columbian contacts in the New World. He is a member of the Society for Scientific Exploration, Arid Lands Society, AAAS, Natural Philosophy Alliance, and International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine. He is Director of the Orgone Biophysical Research Lab (OBRL), which he founded in 1978, and which is today located at a high-altitude research facility in the Siskiyou Mountains near to Ashland, Oregon.

New Slander from an Old Emotional Pest

Most recently I posted out an announcement of my forthcoming lecture and seminar in Munich Germany.  A flyer announcing that event was circulated, which is still available and can be downloaded from here:
http://www.orgonelab.org/DeMeoMunich2012.pdf

Almost before the electrons had dissipated from the computer screens, Mr. Joel Carlinsky, a well-known troublemaker and emotional pest in the USA, began writing rants against myself and this event.  He recruited several persons to help spread his poison, including a Mr. Petros Evdokas of Cyprus.  They posted up a strange article to a German communist website wherein I was finger-pointed as a "neo-Nazi" as well as other unflattering things, but which I will not dignify by repeating here nor giving out the weblink.  My response as posted to that website, however, is given below.

The Munich event will proceed as usual, and we hope all people of good-will with legitimate interests in Wilhelm Reich's important discoveries will plan to attend.

In good will,

James DeMeo, PhD

Joel Carlinsky, Agent Provacateur and Liar
James DeMeo 12.01.2012 - 06:51

Assuming anybody wastes time to read Mr. Carlinsky's lies, as the target of his abuse, I should like to say the following:

1. I'm a life-long political moderate and old-fashioned liberal who loathes the Nazis and everything they stand for. One could search my writings forever and never find even one sentence that even remotely supports them, much less directly so. My websites, for the curious, are here:
 http://www.orgonelab.org
 http://www.saharasia.org

2. I am known in the USA as a supporter and scientific investigator of the writings and research of the late Dr. Wilhelm Reich, whom all educated people in Germany, especially those from the left, will know as having also been an anti-Nazi freedom fighter, who fled to the USA to escape European fascism. He wrote the important books "Mass Psychology of Fascism", "People in Trouble", "The Sexual Revolution", and so on. My own major book, "Saharasia" (you can get it from Amazon.de), is formulated in a similar direction, but with a global cross-cultural evaluation. It is decidedly pro-freedom, pro-woman, and pro-sexuality, and since it covers pre-historical and historical events prior to 1900, it does not deal with the Nazi fascists. Read it to learn more.

3. Mr. Carlinsky, meanwhile, has a long history of attacking and denigrating the work and person of Wilhelm Reich, and of myself especially. He appears to have some mental condition, a fixation about Reich which drives him to alternatively attack Reich and every scholar or scientist who takes Reich's work seriously, and then to misportray himself as a big supporter of Reich. He was imprisoned for burglary of the Wilhelm Reich Museum years ago, and made threats to burglarize the homes of people supporting Reich's work, or to kill them. He also has working relations with members of the American "skeptics clubs" who make war against every new idea, especially against natural healing methods, and so Carlinsky is basically supporting the same people who threw Reich into prison and burned his books in the USA. A full exposition of his angry and disruptive actions can be found here:

That is all I care to say about this creepy character, except to say also that his associates who try to hide themselves, such as Mr. Petros Evdokas of Cyprus who posted up this trashy slander and defamation for Mr. Carlinsky, are well known to us and will also be publicly exposed.

Subject: More Lies About Wilhelm Reich -- This time from the Right-Wing
greensprings...
Send Email Send Email

The following Comment Letter was sent to the online news outlets, Canada Free Press and The Examiner, in reply to a recent slander of Wilhelm Reich by conservative commentator Douglas Gibbs.  The article contains a small pile of quite malicious errors, mis-attributing to Reich the authorship of a book he did not write nor contribute to, claiming once again that he was "a member of the Frankfurt Group", and attributing to him an ugly little quotation which was so off from his thinking that it was fully impossible that he could have written it.  With a simple internet search, I actually found the original quote, repeated below, in the "Manifesto" of the insane Norwegian mass-murderer, Anders Breivik!  The article mis-attributes the words of an insane child-murderer to Wilhelm Reich, a man who devoted his life to defending children!

When informed of the problems in the article, both the author and the editors at these "alternative media" outlets just ignored my comments, either deleting or burying them into a comment section, and nothing was changed in the article itself, which continues now to be indexed and re-quoted by others.  I am therefore making the matter public, and encourage others who have the time to make their own efforts to write to those two media outlets, via the weblinks below, and to here:

It also underscores another issue I've spoken about previously, that the "alternatives media" (right-wing, left-wing, "populist" or whatever) has its own share of truth-benders, gossipers and angry scribblers, quite happy to lie and slander, and then try to cover-up when caught doing it, being no better in this regard than the "mainstream media".

Regarding the article "Political Correctness: Tool of Marxism" by Douglas Gibbs:
Quoting from the Norwegian Killer and Communist Party Hacks!
http://www.canadafreepress.com/index.php/article/44100
http://www.examiner.com/political-buzz-in-los-angeles/political-correctness-tool-of-marxism

This article is poorly-researched and carries many patently false claims about Wilhelm Reich.  Firstly, Reich is not the author of The Authoritarian Personality, which was written by Adorno, Frenkel-Brunswik, Levinson and Sanford, who were all liberal-left in sentiment.   And the quote Mr. Gibbs mis-attributes to Reich is equally false and quite malicious, having been written in fact by the insane Norwegian mass-murder killer-of-children, Anders Breivik!   Mr. Gibbs wrote:

To eliminate the non-Marxist political systems, Reich taught that "the patriarchal social structure would be replaced with matriarchy; the belief that men and women are different and properly have different roles would be replaced with androgyny; and the belief that heterosexuality is normal would be replaced with the belief that homosexuality is 'normal'."  (Breivik, 2082 A European Declaration of Independence, p.16)

Reich never said this, nor anything similar.  This was from Breivik, and if you don't care to download his entire 1500+ page madhouse screed from internet, the key quote is also part of a discussion posted up by at this blog page:
http://johnjenkinsnfdu.blogspot.com/2011/07/anders-behring-breivik-and.html

Reich was a young Marxist in the struggle against Hitlerism, but was expelled from the German Communist Party in 1932, for his criticisms of party leaders and their anti-freedom policies.  He was quickly put on an NKVD death list, already being on the Gestapo death-list.  Reich became an outspoken anti-communist after the 1930s and remained so until his death in 1957.  He was NEVER a member of the "Frankfurt Group" of Freudo-Marxists, who never had a good opinion of him.  They considered Reich to be a bad Marxist, notably for his rejection of  "class struggle" ideology (the proletariat, he argued, was just as neurotic and sexually impotent as the bourgeoisie).

Reich also had a decidedly heterosexual emphasis, arguing that a loving genital heterosexuality was the "gold standard" for human emotional and psychological health.  He defended the rights of young lovers (as with Romeo and Juliet) to have their romances, but also argued that children had to be protected from adult abusers and seducers.  He was critical of pornography, but for legalization of divorce, contraception and abortion, which were illegal in his day.  His clinical findings opposed the "raw discharge" theory of "anything goes" sexuality as promoted by Kinsey, and he argued that love was a critical ingredient for full sexual gratification.  He also argued for decriminalization of homosexuality, even while considering it neurotic.  For holding these views, both the Left and the Right tend to have big problems with Wilhelm Reich, both finding things to agree with, and disagree with.

It is one thing to make solid and historically accurate criticisms of Reich, based upon facts.  But Mr. Gibbs would quote from an insane killer who machine-guns children by the score, and put those dirty words into Reich's mouth!

Factually, the claims that Reich was some kind of communist pervert is a 1950s smear, fabricated and spread publicly in mainstream media articles and books during Reich's lifetime by the Communist Left.  In some kind of strange Orwellian twist, today those old slanders are being unearthed and quoted by the authoritarian religious Right, as if Communist truth-benders are suddenly "OK", if their lies can be put to good use against someone like Reich.  Details on that are too complex to present here, but there are full articles on this matter already posted to internet:

Please correct your ugly little error-filled article, and stop repeating disinformation which comes directly out of the Communist Party, or from insane mass-murderers.

Sincerely,

A new article was published in a major Italian medical journal critical of the "infectious HIV" theory of AIDS (yes, it is only a theory, and not a very good or accurate one), with the lead author being Dr. Peter Duesberg, of the Department of Cell Biology at UC Berkeley.

The paper carries the provocative and fully accurate title:

BACKGROUND

He is author of books and articles on the subject, to include Saharasia, The Orgone Accumulator Handbook, as editor of Heretic's Notebook and On Wilhelm Reich and Orgonomy, and co-editor of Nach Reich: Neue Forschungen zur Orgonomie.

He is a member of the  Society for Scientific Exploration, Arid Lands Society, AAAS, American Meteorological Society, Natural Philosophy Alliance, and International Society for the Study of Subtle Energy and Energy Medicine. He is Director of the Orgone Biophysical Research Lab (OBRL), which he founded in 1978, and which is today located at a high-altitude research facility in the Siskiyou Mountains near to Ashland, Oregon, USA.

Every so often, I remind the OBRL subscribers of my prior work on Saharasia, which has important relevance to the modern-day situation.  The world maps of human behavior developed and presented within the Saharasia book were the product of the largest-ever cross-cultural review of human family and sexual life around the world, in a systematic survey of over 1000 different world cultures.  It was a 7-year research project breaking new territory on comparative social anatomy.  And most importantly for today, as early as 1986 the major World Behavior Map produced within my Saharasia study, identified the global regions dominated by modern Islam as the most socially and political repressive, the most extreme patriarchal authoritarian, and most violent and war-like, as exist on our small planet.  To the newcomers on the OBRL subscriber list, and to the old subscribers, I once again re-state the need for these scientific facts about world behavior to gain a wider appreciation, in spite of their seriously "politically incorrect" nature.  The findings continue to be ignored, censored out of discussion, or malicously attacked by those on both the extreme Left and Right - which in some measure is a testimonial.  Saharasia is additionally a powerful scientific confirmation of Wilhelm Reich's theories on human behavior and sexuality, which are similarly ignored, censored and attacked.
Saharasia: The 4000 BCE Origins of Child Abuse, Sex-Repression, Warfare and Social Violence, In the Deserts of the Old World

Also today I wish to give a supporting announcement for a new website on Political Islam, and their specific Bulletin of the Oppression of Women, which basically is a narrative about the oppression of women in Islamic nations.  See the following websites.  They are yet another source of objective clarity about who is on the side of human freedom, who truly cares about the life and health needs of babies, children and youth, about who is on the side of love and life, of the young Romeos and Juliets of our sick world... and who is not.

Political Islam

The Bulletin of the Oppression of Women

They lack certain appreciations, for example of women's role in patriarchal authoritarian and violent societies, and how mothers and grandmothers are often the primary supporters of the very system which keeps them and their children down as slaves.  For an appreciation of that, see my Saharasia work above.

I suggest to review just the entries for February alone, and then ask, how much of that material appeared in your regular news source?  And if they are not including this material in their regular reporting, or if they are giving it political spin so as to apologize for it, or to shift away the blame onto someone else, then to ask:  Why? Whose side are they on? What are their goals?  And most importantly, Why might you continue to buy their rags, read their stuff, and rely upon them for information?

The other websites I have previously recommended are also still of excellent merit, a life-line to truth and fact in a world where both are cheapened and distorted with "agreeable and popular" lies.  Don't be fooled, educate yourself.
