BioWare Austin seeks candidates for the position of Database
Administrator. The Database Administrator will develop and maintain
database infrastructure components for online games. This job
requires a high level of expertise in administration, development,
backup, recovery, and tuning of database components. This position
requires both operational and development DBA capabilities. The
successful candidate must be able to plan, implement, and maintain DB
operational services as well as develop database architectural and
script based components. Oracle DBA, PL/SQL development, Unix
administration & scripting as it pertains to a DBA, and perl
scripting are the primary skill sets of this job, but other database
experience in open source databases such as Postgres, MySQL,
EnterpriseDB are required as well. Oracle experience in a production
environment and warehousing experience is required. The successful
candidate will contribute to the development of all technologies
related to database systems in a collaborative environment populated
by domain experts.

Key Responsibilities
• The DBA administers and maintains relational databases and
assists in the development and implementation of policies and
procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of company
databases.
• Performs database performance tuning, capacity planning,
replication, and other distributed data issues.
• Partners with developers on data modeling, logical and
physical schema design and SQL query tuning.
• Troubleshoots database related application problems and works
with Oracle tech support to resolve issues in a timely manner.
• Installs and maintains Oracle and other database products,
including patch application and upgrade of environments.
• Develops scripts to automate routine maintenance tasks as
appropriate.
• Maintains and develops database backup/recovery process using
RMAN for hot backups and disaster recovery.
• Implements changes to development, test, and production
environments.
• Completes complex assignments requiring technical knowledge
and experience to develop and implement creative solutions.
• Performs robust backup and recovery systems.
• Creates new database infrastructure components for online
games.
• Migrates database from EnterpriseDB to Oracle.
• Automates database monitoring solutions.
• Conducts warehouse based BI solutions and automated metrics
and reporting solutions for both game and business systems.



Experience and Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
• Minimum of 4 years experience in Relational Database
Administration in a production environment
• Database administration experience in an ASP model is
preferred, along with experience on mid to large-scale, distributed
web architectures utilizing ASP and/or CGI technologies
• Experience with "state of the art" application server
environments, and enterprise integration technologies is required
• Relational database administration experience is required (At
lease one of the following: SQL Server, Oracle, Informix)
• Production DBA experience as an operations DBA
• Expert with backup and recovery solutions including planning,
implementing and periodic evaluation of backup/recovery
(offline/online) strategies, RMAN, recovery catalog, fast recovery
strategies, and interfacing with third party products and hardware
• Expert with SQL level tuning, instance level tuning, storage
tuning and replication based solutions
• Significant knowledge of Oracle internals
• Solid understanding of capacity planning and traffic modeling
• Previous experience with conversions of Oracle to and from
open source offerings such as MySQL, Postgres, EnterpriseDB
• Experience with clustering technologies (shared & shared
nothing) and data modeling
• Replication experience; Custom solutions, Snapshot based,
Streams based, Multi-master
• Data ware house experience; Custom ETL solutions, Dimensional
modeling & star schemas
• Able to perform partitioning schemes & pruning, data cubes,
custom reporting solutions, PL/SQL & T-SQL program units, PL/SQL
optimization techniques, ADT & OO database object experience
• Multi-phase transaction processing
• Schema optimization techniques
• Oracle memory management techniques
• Shell Scripting in both bash & perl
• Linux monitoring and tuning techniques as they pertain to a
DBA
Pluses:
• Unix system administration knowledge
• Perl programming expertise
• Java
• Web experience
