Hi.

I'm using Xbox 360 as a mediaplayer from TwonkyMedia v3.1 from ts-101
v1.2.1. This TwonkyMedia version has some problems with Xbox (can't
list images and videos.. music works fine :) ) and after reading
hundreds of postsi think that new beta non public version of the
firmware 1.3.0 has the latest TwonkyMedia version that i read that
works fine with XBOX. i can't find this beta version anyware..

So i realy need latest Qnap ts-101 beta firmware version (1.3.0 ?).
where can i get it? Can anyone send me this version?

Thanks in advance..

I had a TS-101 that did this to me when I first got it. Upgraded the
firmware and it made things a little better. In the end I took it to
bits and founf the IDE connector was not secure on the HDD. Reseated it
and since (touchwood) it has been without problem.

In addition if the HD1 has screwed up once I'd want to buy another disk
and replace it

Hi there,

I just experienced my first hang-up of my TS-201:
Symptoms:

Ping working
Twonky partially working: Browsing was OK, streaming failed.
Web-Interface dead
LED of HD1 permanentely on
power-down using the button not working
Share-access not working

It really looks like the HD-interface was screwed up.
At the moment this was happening the TS was finally idle.

I had to powercycle the 201. Now HD1 is identified as corrupt (who
wonders), but RAID1 is working as expected and HD1 is currently rebuild.

Did anyone else experience this jet ?

If you are using 1.3.0, you can telnet directly to the administrator
log in (telnet my.ts101.web.addr 13131). If using 1.2.1 you can
generate the MD5 checksum (note all letters must be entered in upper
case) to enable the telnet port (see the wiki).

Alternatively you can use something called PHPTerm (once again Andrew
sorted this first). It can be found at http://phpterm.sourceforge.net/

Basically you download the tar file using Firefox or equivalent (Not
internet explore - it screws the file!) and open using either winzip
or 7zip (if you are on windows) or on linux / cygwin
>> tar -xvjf phpterm-0.3.0.tar.bz2

Open the phpterm.php file, and add a username / password combination
(Dont use your admin password as the files are not secure!)
// example below...
// $password = array('user' => 'passwd');
$password = array('ts101' => 'opents');

Save the file, and copy phpterm.php, phpterm.css and menu.js into your
QWeb directory. Next point to it in your web browser...
my.ts101.web.addr/phpterm.php

This should open a simple console window which has guest priviledges;
and you can look in your system - e.g. with cat /proc/pci - this
lists the PCI devices present in the system. You should see either
e1000#0 (Intel 8250) or something like RTL (Reallink).

Alternatively issue the ifconfig -a command to see your network
connections - once again e1000#0 means Intel, RTL is Reallink.

Checking the presence of the JTAG connection basically requires
opening the box and looking for a 2x7 set of through pads... but is
not strictly necessary. Just assume that there is no JTAG...

As some of you are aware, there are a couple of TS-101 PCB
variations... some with Intel 8250EM ethernet chipsets (2 PCB
variations) and others with the Realtek 8110 (same as TS-201).

The Intel versions appear to be early board designs; the Realtek the
more recent. However it would be interesting to find out how many of
the earlier Intel boards were released. Hence the poll...

As an asside; the MAC address for the Intel boards is stored in the
/dev/mtdblock6 partition and NOT an EEPROM - although space exists for
a 93C46 (top left of chip, marked as TP5). The Realtek boards have
this EEPROM installed, and it is initialised by U-Boot.

This is a pity as it means early boards are limited in their design
features for U-Boot - for which Andrew is producing excellant work.

The QNAP guys had at one point apparently been working with Synology... and
I suspect that once one system is designed; others are reverse engineered
and adapted with newer components; rather than someone sitting back and
saying - hey - how can we design this properly?

Although the components may be expensive - and aging fast - the company
philosophy is probably - lets get something out as fast as we can, doing the
same as our competitor only... faster or with SATA support (Kurobox vs Qnap)
or updated firmware. Even the U-boot stuff is done quickly as a hack - using
known sandpoint configurations.

Perhaps one day some nice design sole will provide a Power NAS solution
smaller than QNAP with lots of nice updatable features ;-)

Correct.

The MPC82xx, and MPC83xx family at this time does not support
64 bit PCI-X, or 8x PCIe. Though the MPC85xx/86xx does. Freescale
may add PCIe to the next generation MPC83xx controllers next
year. We'll have to see (crossing my fingers).

The ironic part is that in looking at the bill of materials for the
TS-101/201, its fairly clear to me that they are very expensive
to make given the aging processor technology they used. Having
designed the Sun Ray while I was still with Sun Microsystems, I
can tell you these designs aren't very sophisticated or as
integrated as they could have been. In fact, they are quite
crude.

Had Qnap used the MPC8343 for example, they could have greatly
increased their integration, performance, and greatly lowered
their manufacturing costs.

The design similarities between the four known MPC8241 NAS designs
I've looked at is striking. The Iomega Storecenter, Qnap TS-201/101,
Planex NAS, and Kurio box are all relatively the same design with
few minor differences. This would point to a common reference
design being used, provided by the processor supplier Freescale.

However Freescale doesn't offer anything closely resembling these
designs, so it must be either a common OEM, or consultant that
design it. And perhaps licensed it out.

Truth be known, the choice of the MPC8241 was a poor one in my
opinion. Freescale has far better offerings to choose from. Its
a shame they didn't see fit to use them.

Unfortunately this (response of Paul) is probably the best at the moment.
QRaid is a modified version of rsync; and there are known issues with rsync,
small memory formats, and large drives. Specifically, there are recommended
command line parameters not issued by the QRaid functions within the
firmware.

Rebuilding the GPL code (if possible) would enable these things to be
changed; similarly using a new boot environment (e.g. Debian Kernel) may
allow things to be improved.

As Andrew pointed out - there is NO way to implement a hardware SATA raid
controller. The only possible solution would be to find a mini-pci device
which can be fitted into a (to be fitted) mini pci slot. But for most people
this is too technical.

Talking with the protium guys - any new SATA II controller needs the PCIe or
PCI-X bus - which is not available with the MPC8241 chipset. There may be
new chips in the future from Freescale which support other SATA controllers
- but not in the Turbostation 201/101 life time... and probably even then
too expensive for a simple NAS.

In terms of other nice NAS boxes - have a little look at
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/11/29/review_shuttle_xpc_x100/ and
http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/11/30/diskless_linux_web_pcs/ - some of
which could have little hard disks added. Just a pity they are expensive,
and proprietory!

I don't believe that this has been done yet.

Interestingly QNAP could probably provide this but haven't chosen to
do so. If you browse to:

http://MyQnapTS:6000/cgi-bin/network/network.cgi?func=nfs_main

You get a page that allows you to enable NFS.

Unfortunately I think it tries to run /etc/init.d/nfs which doesn't
exist (along with some other supporting files).

We can only hope someone takes up the challenge or that QNAP decide
to include it in a future update.

Thanks. I gave up with QRAID and took the external SATA disk and

Unfortunately the Sil 3512 controller used in the TS-101/TS-201
doesn't support hardware RAID.

QNAP seem to implement RAID with a custom driver running behind
the /dev/qraid1 device. Unfortunately I don't think the source code
for this is in their GPL download, so just how it works (or doesn't
work) is a bit of a mystery!

I have just uploaded a U-Boot patch to the files area and provided some
updates on its use at:

http://scratchpad.wikia.com/wiki/Open_Turbostation:Boot_Loader

This patch provides a hopefully safe way of adding network support to
the Turbostation TS-101 boot loader without actually having to replace
it. After installing it should be possible to boot TFTP and NFS hosted
images across the network.

At the moment the number of people using this patch is 1 - me. So it
works, but it is always possible I have made an unintendended typo
somewhere in the instructions.

It can probably be adapted for the TS-201, but I don't have one to play
with.

Hi all,

Thought I would pop across from the Slimserver forum to see what was
happening.

The QNAP TS-101 has a feature called QRAID which is supposed to allow
RAID-1 (Mirroring) between the internal harddisk and external disk.
However, it seems to have a few issues:

- The external disk seems to have to be significantly larger than the
internal. I have a Maxtor 160GB internal and 200GB External but this
ran out of space. Anyone know why?

- QRAID sync is very slow on initial setup >24 hours in my case before
it then failed.

- I see that quite a few SATA chips support hardware RAID is this
possible with the TS-101 rather than software?

We've got our new wiki up for the open source version of
our port to the Iomega Turbostation. The turbostation design
is very similar to the Qnap in that it's 8241 based. The key
difference is the IDE controller on the Iomega is not SATA.

We plan to migrate this to the Qnap TS-201, would anyone be
interested in helping? Right now the source and binary isn't
currently up, but it will be in the next week or so. We are

Currently the best solution is to use a hack from Progressive AV in
the UK... they will shortly 'sell' an install package for around 39
euro (last I heard). It generally is well supported; and it is
designed for the audiophile rather than PC hacker. I.e. push a button
and go.

There is of course no reason why you cannot develop the same thing
yourself. As an example, the Slimserver on Synology stuff is freely
available (search SSoDS) and perhaps someone here will develop it as
well. You will need to set up a cross compiler first though...

Well it has been a long couple of weeks; and a few new people have
joined which is nice. So what news.... (no particular order)...

Open Turbostation
=================
Qnap have been contacted (via a distributor) regarding their official
policy of the 'Open Turbostation' concept. Apparently they have
previously discussed in-house ideas of opening the turbostation to the
community; but not yet made any formal decisions. We are hoping that
they say yes....

But a load of the GPL downloads including U-Boot stuff have
disappeared from their ftp.qnap.com.tw website :( They still serve the
new beta firmware release (1.3.0, maybe 1.3.1) which includes updated
twonky drivers etc. However it is unclear whether they have removed
the root access facility via the telnet prompt.

Memory upgrades
===============
Upgrading the TS101 for more memory appears to require using a
different version of U-Boot. Principally, in the sandpoint8245.h and
.c files there are #define configurations for how many memory banks
are populated. I hope to get my cross compiler working properly this
weekend, and can then rebuild U-boot with this option... and test with
16x16M and 32x16M format memory chips (i.e. adding either 64MB or 128MB).

JTAG Access
===========
It appears that there are at least three revisions of the TS101 board;
many of which do not have the JTAG port :( Poor flusk. Anyhow I have
a JTAG connector; have wired it up and recieved a parallel port
adapter (purchased from Kurzito) which I will also try to configure
this weekend. So hoping I can play with bricked TS101's if necessary.
Note: all boards still appear to support the In-Chip Serial
Programming Port of the Pic Controller. I suspect this is the primary
route for installing firmware etc on the TS101's... and may be worth
investigating further.

Mini-PCI
========
I was a lucky one to have a mini-pci connector installed as default.
It seems most boards do not have this populated. The PCI library (e.g.
lspci command) is not included in the Linux build on the TS101... once
again something I will try out over time.

New Firmware
============
As mentioned above there is a new firmware going through beta testing
- 1.3.0 - it can be downloaded from their ftp site (google for
username / password). Some people on the Slimdevices forum seem to be
happy with it. There will also be other packages to support future
downloads...

Internal USB Ports
==================
There are two un-used USB ports on the TS101. The data lines of these
are currently set to GND via a SMT resistor; and the Ps lines are
un-connected. If you feel good with a soldering iron then you can
connect them up to a USB stick or similar... im tempted to try! Not
sure if it is supported in the code though.

TS102 - the 101 Slave?
======================
There were rumours of a TS102 - an E-sata based slave for the TS101
using the same housing. This seems to have been squashed by the Qnap
representative / Qnap directly; i.e. is not in development.

Cross Compilers
===============
One user has a working cross compiler... I need to get mine tweaked
(not had enough time) and once documentation is sound I will update
wiki...

Your OpenTurbostation Projects
==============================
As this site / wiki develops it would be interesting to hear about
your developments / progress etc. Please feel free to add information
to the Wiki - post info here. It is an 'Open Turbostation' so lets
develop things openly... ;-)

Enjoy your development work!

Since we are now three members I thought I would send a post... and
make sure the groups system is working.

Over the next few weeks I hope others will join; and we can start
discussing ideas without having to wreck the Slimdevices forum! If you
also feel like being moderators then let me know.

Enjoy the nice weekends!
