Hey Mike,

Does this mean you will hold UUEncode classes for everyone?

And there's always UUEncoding. Anyone that know how to handle that probably
won't get burned by a virus or trojan or worm :o)

If you've gotten the images out of books, here's what I'd do if I were you:

I'd go to Amazon.com and see if the books are for sale. If they are then I'd put
up an 'affiliation' link to that book on Amazon where ever the image appears on
your site (no reason you can't make some money for yourself). Write the
publisher
of the book explaining the way you are using the photo or image and how you have
links directly into their book sales. I can't imagine an artist in the world who
wouldn't love the extra advertising. Besides, this way you can make some money
too:)

If you are using pics from PREVIOUS Palace owner's... you should ask them,
too!

I am not planning on using any current Palace Owner's pictures, etc. MOST not
all I have scanned in myself. Just a few pictures that I have (of
paintings or
photographs) either have the copyright date embedded right on them or none at
all.

I would add to your list what someone had said earlier for ethics sake. You want
to get permission from a Palace Owner before you ever use some other palace's
images. People can get super irate if they stumble into your palace and see all
their work that they either bought or had designed in someone else's palace. I
know I'd be pretty upset and I'd do whatever I could to prevent someone using my
palace's images, including suing them.

What you might want to do to really be safe is use scanned art that is over 75
years old. Then you have absolutely no worries. Anything older than 75 years old
has had it's copyright run out.

If the art you are using DOES have an existing copyright, then no you cannot use
them. The artist would have the right to charge you for the time that you had
them
up. A usage fee. So you wouldn't want to use someone's work and hope you don't
get
caught. That could add up in the long run. If I were you I would use every
possible means to contact the artist and if you couldn't reach them then don't
use
the art. Many artists will let you use their work if you give them a link and
recognition.

Life is always done best by being thorough and as fair as you can. If you were
an
artist trying to make a living, how would you feel if a bunch of people just
stole
your art and gave it away to everyone based on the theory, let them catch me?
Think about things from a bottom line of fairness and you'll have your answers.

Got this on my Scouts list and thought that I would forward it. I looked
into it by my local area and it said a wierd pre-fix that I didnt recognise
so I called the phone co and they said it is a local call.

Interesting......
______________________________________________________

Last night I tried out a FREE Internet Service Provider that works
very well. They have over thousands of phone numbers all over the
USA that you can use to connect. They also give you a FREE E-mail
account. The FREE service works just like your current ISP only
at no monthly cost to you. Advertisers pay for it all.

I used it for about four hours last night and it was a faster
56K connection than what I already had. All you have to do is
download their connection software and install it on your PC.
You can use either Netscape of MS Explorer as you regular browser
and still use your old E-mail software too. So you don't have to
change what you currently use.

The service name is "NetZero".

You can find them at: http://www.netzero.com

You can check out their dialup access numbers by state at:
http://www.netzero.com/customer/access.html

Check it to see if there are local numbers for you to use. I found
two local phone numbers for my town, compared to having only one
from my old service. Now I can save $19.95 a month and use that
money for something else. :-)

I would like to thank, so far, the people who put my mind at ease
about
the related copyright issue. By far I am not a "graphics major" but people
tell me I am "close to it" because of the gift I have with manipulating and
mastering almost any application program that is/was made for a computer.
:)

So what I am "hearing", in my understanding, is this:

         1) I can use the pictures from where I have gotten them from.
         2) IF someone writes to me & asks to stop using their work, I will.
         3) MOST of the Wolf Paintings, I have acquired, I can use almost
with
ease because they are/have the copyright date on them from
       the author, correct?

Hey, Doc? Is the above points that I am making according to your family
lawyers accurate? I hope! ;)

Also, I also wanted to update you on my "permission-of-use" response. I got
permission from the Organization to use any and all of their pictures. I am
so excited. Hey Barbara! Just so you know that just boosted my ego and
gave me
more confidence for my palace site! :^D

If there is anything more that I can find out about copyrights; please, bring
it on! Again, thank you to the people for all of your help! This definitely
has lifted a 10-TON weight off my chest! ;)

One other aspect to consider: Even tho a picture may not seem to be
copyrighted in any way, but was downloaded from another palace, only
considering ethics, one should ask permission from that palace owner. In
other words, try not to use pictures used in other palaces.

An exception: I've scanned in a number of pictures for my palace including
ones done by Thomas Kinkade. Now, I've seen them used in other palaces,
but I feel that since I scanned them in and processed them in my individual
style (originally it was a private palace mind you), and even mentioned it
with a few of the other palace owners who have used the paintings, I feel
that I haven't "borrowed" anybody else's work.

But, of course, this is not to mention Kinkade himself. Maybe we should
ask him for permission; but, frankly, I'm scared to. I'm afraid that he
(as well as some of the other artists we've used in our various palaces)
would object to that use. So that leaves some of us using art in the hopes
that we won't be found out, but, indeed, try to display their works with
taste.

Another example while I'm at it: I use Mary Engelbreit's work almost
exclusively for my avatars now, and even for a few room pics. I'm almost
certain from what I've read that if she or anyone in her company were to
know, I would be asked to cease and desist. So I go on about my way and
try to rationalize it this way: I always try to do justice by her art and
present it in a form that only shows her work positively. I always let it
be known that a certain piece was derived from ME's work; I've introduced I
don't know how many to her art. So, figuratively, I hold my breath all the
while, while I enjoy creating my own little Engelbreit world in Palace. In
a way, I would love to show Mary what I've done. I believe, aside from the
copyright issue, that she would be very pleased with most, if not all, of
the work I've done derived from her work. But, alas, I probably will never
have the pleasure in showing it to her.

One woman's thoughts...

The best thing to do is to get the permission of the artist and have them
outline the terms for use of their artwork. Some will give you permission
without a hitch.

If you have a problem finding the artist and you have made an honest effort
to do so, you should go right ahead and use the work with the understanding
that the artist may find you out. However, all they can do is to have an
attorney contact you to tell you to stop using the artwork (a cease and
desist order). You will not go to court, you will not go to jail for doing
this.

Unfortunately, I have a few attorneys in the family and this would be their
advice.

Regards,

Dr. Crusher

That's just the whole point, ME. MOST of the pictures that I DO have there is
NOTHING linking them to the original owners. I have dabbled in the art of
photography and ANY "art" is a touchy subject. There are two that I have
written permission to but no response as of yet.

The pictures that have no way to get in touch with the original
photographer/artist: A) Can they still be used? B) Some of the prints that I
do have, have the author's name w either a copyright symbol and/or date
next to
a copyright symbol or both! Can I make a clause stating something like
this:

All photos and/or pictures within my Palace Site Copyrighted where
indicated.

Hello! Welcome to this new list both current and new members! :)

I an in the process of trying my hand at creating my own Palace. I am
concerned about the pictures I have been gathering about Cyberspace with
Copyrights. Most of the pictures that I have NO copyright information on

anywhere! And, OTOH, some do! I am willing to give any and all credit to the

But, somebody told me, that most pictures that are taken from the sites can be

Barbara..

Try replying to this. I have no attachments set on this and if you are
trying to reply with an attachment or send a vcard, it wont go through.

To the rest-

With all the accidental virus senders out there.. I dont want any
chances taken with the people on this list so I have attachments not
allowed here.

There is a area attached to this page to put files you want to share.. but
I ask that you keep them small if at all possible. But there is a group
file area to share.. check it out at the one list addy.

*NOTE* Do not put hacks or cracks there.. I will remove them along with
the person that posted them.. this DOES include the so called ad killer
program for Palace!

Yep.. to those of you that were just on the PUG list and not on the PCG
list, I sent you a invitation to join. You need to respond to that letter via
the instructions in the letter. If you allready deleted it.. then you can
send a blank e-mail to http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/PCGF and it
will send you a confirmation letter.

Well, for those of you that were on PCG list. (PCGF@...), this is
a move and merger. I decided that a list with 250 subscribers
generating the traffic that this one can generate would cause alot of
bandwidth usage on the KSV server so I moved the list at the same
time. We will close the PCGF list on the ksv server soon so please
direct your mail to pcgf@onelist.com

I would like to also add that there is a palace graphics list on the onelist
server. You can join that one by sending a blank mail to
http://www.onelist.com/subscribe/Palace-Graphics
