As a data monkey, if I know there is errata for a book, should I be
using the 'book-book' or the errata for the book.

Case in point, my weird beastie I've been looking at has a number of
changes in the errated version. To address what Andrew pointed out, it
no longer advances backward.

What's the official data monkey direction on this?

The formula I use is: BONUS:FEAT|POOL|-floor(CL/3)

Thanks Eddy, that did the trick.

Now to add it to all my (Mindless) classes. :p

You're welcome. For whatever reason this BONUS does not round down like all
the others do so if you don't use the floor function you can end up with
fractions in the feat pool.

I think that would be my fault. IIRC, I added an exception in the java
that specifically excludes this from the rounding down.

IMO the best solution is to eliminate the special coding done for the
FEAT pool behind the scenes and make it all use the same code.

But is that right? My understanding is that feat pools could possibly
be fractional depending on the FRACTIONALPOOL in the ABILITYCATEGORY.
If this is yes, the fractions are valid and you would NOT want to
round down, at least not if I understand the reasoning for this (which
I don't, just going by the docs.)

Barak,

Wizard's spell table does not look like the one I'm using. In the
first post, and in a later one I said that it works for "normal" spell
tables.

My spell table has '0' entries in the middle of the table, which is not
"normal". The thought being that I can use one of the higher-level
slots when I choose one from a level that has a '0' entry.

When I choose a spell with a '0' entry, I get the error message saying
that there are no higher-level slots available. This happens even
when *all* higher-level slots are available.

This is *not* the way the wizards table works. The Wizard's table has
no '0' entries in the middle of the table. If I put a '1' in those
slots, I can correctly use the higher-level slots.

There appears to be specific code preventing what I'm trying to do.
Since I know of no reason in the rules to prevent this, it seems like
a bug to me.

So I was trying to remove a fraction more than was there and it flipped the
program out. :p

I might have gotten there eventually on my own, but I can guarantee it would

I would put it in a Feat and call the Feat from the Domain file.

I'm unsure if FEAT will trigger the chooser in a FEAT, since I'm
unsure if ABILITY will do that (and it now leverages the ABILITY code)
- Doc folks, Doc FREQ for you for 5.14 - you need to test ABILITY and
FEAT behavior for CHOOSE and update the top of the CHOOSE page.

.... thus you may have to use ADD:FEAT, but either way, I'd advise
just putting it in a Feat and dealing with it from there (which gives
you the ability to set NUMCHOICES and SELECT

is your table something like:

1
101
201
30201

or like

1
01
11
101
2101

?

I know there are code issues that prevent the second case (found those
during a code review a while back), but I think the first case should
work - if it does not, that's a bug.

If I replace the '0' entries with '1's, then is does choose from the

Glad to know it is a bug. Hope it gets in 5.14 =)

Subject: Debug mode, logging and not released for prod versions

I will admit this is the first time I've done much with a pre-prod
version of PCGen. From the documentation viewpoint, it's kind of
frustrating. But, this question is about the debugging.

I'm seeing lots of messages whiz by my screen. Since they roll off, I
have no way to scroll back and see if I can figure anything out. So,
question number 1 is:

1) Is there a way to look at the log after it's scrolled off the
console/window?

2) I'm seeing a lot of messages related to all the fonts I have on my
machine - many, that is. Are these because I'm using 5.13.10 or
something else? Is there a way to get this down to the messages I
really have to worry about? I've tried playing with the various logging
levels with little success.

3) When you get the java type errors, any clues on how to trace it back
to something real, or you have to know java in order to translate those?

Thanks.

Yes, but you have to open a console first, modify it's properties, and
then start PCGen from within the console. This generally means you have
to know enough about the console to navigate to the PCGen directory to
launch it.

Honestly, that depends totally on what you were doing at the time of the
message, but in general, even knowing java won't help in some cases
unless you have the code in front of you AND can determine what data
it's expecting. For example, if a method take 4 arguments and you get
a a NullPointerException, then you have to try to determine if on of
the arguments was the one that was null or if it was a temp variable
inside the method or what. This is why steps to reproduce are so vital
(I worked in a phone support position for almost 10 years).

If you can get on IM or IRC, I can try to help walk you through to see
what's going on, assuming you are on windows.

I have a set up where one feat gives you access to multiple options (think

gives a bonus to a specific skill, and that isn't working. I have the sub-feats

We should have a standard yes, I'll raise it as a doc freq. IMHO we
can choose to use a formal notation as long as that formal notation is
explained clearly in the docs,

e.g. When the docs say ("<classname>") you should replace the
<classname> with your actual classname e.g. ("MyClass")

The tag as shown above does indeed work. My question is this. Can you
put a PRE tag on a .CLEAR? It doesn't appear so. I have to clear the
descriptor for specific spells that have specific domains. Adding a
PREDOMAIN:xxx makes sense, but doesn't work. Any other suggestions?
Call a feat with the descriptor clear and put the PRE on the feat?

No. .CLEAR happens at data load time, not runtime.

Sorry, didn't answer the second half.

I do not believe what you are asking is possible in PCGen - I'm not
aware of any method to modify the Descriptor of a spell (either adding
or removing), "on the fly".

You will probably need to .COPY the spells to something "new" and then
use the "SPELLS" token to add the modified spells to the spell list
for the appropriate PCs

Alright, this one's a little quirky and I'm hung up.

I've got a Prestige Class that I want to give the Lay on Hands
ability, and you've got to be a Cleric or Paladin to take the class.
I can figure out how to do one or the other, but how do I handle the
level-related VARs since they won't exist if the character was a cleric?
I can use this if I'm reading right, but if I define it for a former
cleric, it would just wipe out Paladin levels...
BONUS:VAR|LayOnHandsLVL|CL

Also, I want to have the class progress as a cleric as far as Turn
Undead. It's possible that someone would not have either cleric or
paladin (so won't be able to turn previously). Kind of the same
situation as above - how do I handle two characters, one who can turn
already, and one who can't?

Subfeats have BONUS:SKILL|<skillname>|<bonushere>

Correct? If so then it should work... If not, submit a single sample,
the subfeat and master please.

Here's what I have - please tell me where it's goofed...

Summon Monster III.COPY=Summon Monster III (classthing)
Summon Monster III (classthing) NAMEISPI:YES OUTPUTNAME:Summon
Monster III, Classthing CLASSES:.CLEARALL CASTTIME:.CLEAR
	 CASTTIME:1 standard action

It doesn't appear to have taken the class CLEARALL nor the
CASTTIME:.CLEAR. I know this because it's showing on a cleric spell
list and it shouldn't now.

Any comments...

Partly a rules-lawyer question too:

I am coding a prestige class that asks for a prereq of caster level 6.
Does this mean, 6th level spells or simply his caster LEVEL, like a
cleric with 6 levels? I'm thinking the latter, but I would like a
clarification.

Now, if it IS the latter, how would i go about coding THAT prereq? from
the docs i gather that all the PRExxx regarding spellcasters seem to be
the spell level and not the caster level. Any reason we don't have a
PRECASTERLVL-type tag? PRESPELLCAST doesn't seem to meet my needs. On
the other hand, i may have missed something :)

thanks as always!!!

OK i must be tired. yep it means spellcaster with 6 class levels, not
6th level spells (can be arcane or divine, just to avoid ocnfusion).
Still haven't figured out how to code it though. None of the
PRESPELLxxx tags seem applicable and i've gone through them a couple
times.

I am curous though, IS there or WAS there anything like a
PRECASTERLVL tag? if not, it would be great to include one in a
future build. I would suggest something along the lines of:

__PRECASTERLVL:1,Arcane=3,Divine=4,Psionic=2

Character must be at least a 3rd level arcane caster, 4th level
divine caster or 2nd level psion.__

this would _NOT_ be Spell levels but the actual character's caster
level.

Like I said though, it may already be there already and i'm simply
missing it lol :)

I have a beastie, we'll call him George, that is a 6d8+x creature.
He's a magical beastie, with a subtype of augmented animal.

Now, George seems a bit confused. His stat block says he has +4 BAB.
But PCGen seems to say he has a +6/+1.

I coded him up as MONSTERCLASS:Magical Beast:6 RACETYPE:Magical Beast
RACESUBTYPE:Augmented Animal to get that +6/+1.

Should George somehow get a level of plain something first? How would
one do that on a standard monster? It doesn't appear that
MONSTERCLASS takes two different entries. Maybe there's an Augmented
Animal template somewhere I haven't found?

Oddly, all the other stats line up wonderfully with one odd
exception. George has a +16 jump check. He has the run feat, and
PCGen is giving him the extra +12 all the time - maybe this is normal?

Please help George.

OK the questions just keep on a-comin'!!! lol

I have a custom feat that adds a natural poison spit attack. Is there a
way to code that into the feat, or would it be better to use a template
and simply add THAT to the feat instead?

and AGAIN as always, THANKS GANG!!! :)
