Andrew,

If you can, please create a Doc FREQ for documenting the
Data Converter. I'll be thinking about where to put it.

I don't think I'm making my key question clear. Do I

A) copy all my custom files (both the hand-coded ones and the ones generated by
Tools|List Editor) from the 5.14.1 director to the corresponding location in the
5.16.0 directory and then run the converter on the files in place

B) Do not copy over any files but instead run the converter which will, in the
process of running, copy over the files from 5.14.1 to 5.16.0

Thanks,
Allen

Yes, do one of those things :-).

Actually, I would suggest that you copy the originals to some new
location, then process them to some other new location, finally,
copy the converted files into 5.16. That should give you less chance
of accidentally over-writing something.

OK...I attempted it and had two serious problems (so far):

1. While the batch converter can find my hand-coded files (perhaps because a
.pcc is in the lot) it cannot find the files generated by the LST generator.
These are the files located at pcgen5160/data/customsources/35e. And I'm pretty
sure that the 5.14.1 generated LST files are NOT 5.16.0 compatible. Any idea how
to make the converter fix this?

2. The converter spat out a variety of ominous warning messages. Would any kind
expert out there be willing to look at the errors and tell me which I actually
need to do something about? (I only understood a few elements of 5.14.1 code...I
have no idea how 5.16.0 code is different...)

Many thanks,
Allen

Subject: Making a weapon group

I have been trying to make a feat that gives weapon focus to a group of weapons.
When I try the CHOOSE tag, the list I receive only present me the weapons
individually to choose from.

i.e.
CHOOSE:WEAPONPROFS|TYPE.Mace|TYPE.LightBlade|TYPE.Spear|TYPE.Staff|TYPE.HeavyBla\
de|TYPE.Axe|TYPE.Flail|TYPE.Hammer|TYPE.Pick|TYPE.Polearm|TYPE.Crossbow|TYPE.Sli\
ng|TYPE.Bow
BONUS:WEAPONPROF=%LIST|TOHIT|1
BONUS:WEAPONPROF=%LIST|TOHIT|2|PRELEVEL:MIN=11,MAX=20

Is there a way to receive a grouped list?

There are methods to get 'weapon groups' but the existing syntax is not
designed to handle it, yet.

See CHOOSE:WEAPONPROFS builds it's list from the Proficiencies File,
since you don't see 'TYPE.Blah' as an actual Proficiency it finds it
invalid. Ignore the fact that 'TYPE' does exist in the file, it's
building only from the NAME at the beginning of the line.
Although having CHOOSE:WEAPONPROFTYPES might work, if we had it...

If you don't want to rework proficiencies and weapons then you need to
do the following:

Make a new feat for each group you want
Add the group 'TYPE' in the weapon proficiency to each weapon
proficiency (RSRD has this already if you need to see a working example)
Have you're feat reference the 'type' using BONUS:WEAPONPROF=TYPE.Foo|y|z
NOTE:This will not prevent the weapon from appearing in the Weapon Focus
Feat, with the potential of getting a double bonus.

The above is less work than this next method:
My workaround in certain sets that actually use groups was to make the
groups (Following is an example)
Pikes
Swords
Ranged

Then you change the PROFICIENCY:WEAPON|x with x being the name of the
group, and you do this for each weapon.

So instead of Long Sword having Proficiency of Long Sword, it is now
changed to Swords. Does that make sense?

Note, we have a FREQ for having multiple Proficiencies in the
'PROFICIENCY'' tag, so once that happens, groups will be easier to
implement.

Allan,

I apologize for the slow response from me, I just got home from 14 hours of
plane flights and a week long contract negotiation with a business partner, so I
haven't read any of the thread until now.

A lot of this seems to have been handled "in stream", but for posterity and to
cover some open issues:

The docs from an old note of mine are no longer valid. It originally required a
command line to launch until James (thanks, James!) did some work to put a UI on
the front end to ask the appropriate configuration questions. At this point, as
you've discovered, double clicking on BatchConvert.jar should be sufficient.

^^ B

The converter will not modify the incoming files, so there is no need to copy
them before conversion. Hopefully the system won't allow you to overwrite the
files. I think I tested that :)

There have been some reported issues when significantly changing the directory
in which things are written (and I haven't had a chance to debug it & write a
fix yet), so I would advise the following: In your PCGen 5.14.1 install create a
directory called "newdata". Identify "newdata" as the target directory in the
conversion. The copy the converted directories by hand into the data directory
in your PCGen 5.16 install.

These are the files located at pcgen5160/data/customsources/35e. And I'm pretty
sure that the 5.14.1 generated LST files are NOT 5.16.0 compatible. Any idea how
to make the converter fix this?

This is actually an interesting question, and a problem I had not considered in
writing the converter.

Two things:
(1) Try just copying it over into 5.16, open PCGen, make a data change (create a
throw-away item) and close PCGen. This should force a save in the new syntax.
The next load into 5.16 shouldn't generate any errors. There are a few cases
where this will fail, but it should cover 90+% of cases.
(2) We will have to look into this as an enhancement. TM, FREQ please.

> 2. The converter spat out a variety of ominous warning messages. Would any
kind expert out there be willing to look at the errors and tell me which I
actually need to do something about? (I only understood a few elements of 5.14.1
code...I have no idea how 5.16.0 code is different...)

Since I wrote a good portion of the messages you are welcome to send them to me
in personal mail. I'm not going to guarantee a rapid response (so sending to
Andrew as well to see what he can help with may be useful), as I'm going to
remain sparse for a bit as I'm
working through the weekend on both my "day job" that got displaced this last
week and the contract issues from the negotiation.

I have coded up an alternative iterative attacks template, and it works
fine for displaying weapons. My problem is with the CMB (Pathfinder),
which is used instead of Grapple, and is defined only as a Variable.

Here are some code snippets and what shows up. In the /head section:
<script language="JavaScript">
// <!-- ;
function setCMB(baseattackbonus) {
if (baseattackbonus >= 6) {
document.write("equal to or larger than 6");
} else {
document.write("less than 6");
}
// < end hide -->
</script>

Further on down in the /body section:
<td width="15%">setCMB(|ATTACK.MELEE.BASE|)</td>
Even though setCMB is a function, what is actually is displayed in the
browser is: "setCMB(+3)"

<td width="15%"><script
language="javascript">setCMB(|ATTACK.MELEE.BASE|);</script></td>
Displays a blank field, ie nothing at all.

I have tried to put document.write in the <td>, and just return the
phrase that I want printed.

Can someone give me some pointers, or outright tell me what I am doing
wrong? thanks!!!

I just downloaded version 5.16 and have been trying to put some spells from
other source books (PHII, Spell Compendium etc.)into the list editor on the
tools tab. This worked fine in previous versions but now every time I do it I
get a glitch. I put in that it is a sorcerer spell and after saving it deletes
the fact that it is a sorcerer spell. Can anyone tell me what is up, or have
they had the same problem?

I just want to publicly give Andrew Maitland mad props for the extensive help he
gave me this weekend. He spent several hours helping me migrate some *very*
stale LST code to 5.16.0 compliance. He truly earned his "Legacy King" title.

Also thanks to Tom and the all the members of this Group. You've all been
extremely helpful and generous with your support.

Well, thanks. (I think I'm blushing and the phrase "Ah shucks" comes to
mind, like in those old warner bros cartoons)

Though LegacyKing isn't a Title, it's a screen name I used when I made
my own forum and web site back in 2004. It was suggested by the
co-creator at the time, so I stuck with it.

The applicable title, if you really want to know, is Data/LST Chimp.
(means I've been around and done a lot of data work for a long while).

The True 'Legacy Kings' of PCGen are Tir, Barak and Eddy.... and many
others who aren't as active in the project anymore.

Anyways, I appreciate the gratitude.

Your function looks like it doesn't have the correct number of closing brackets.
Throw an alert("me!"); call in the first line of the function to make sure it's
being called.

Fixed the }'s and added the alert("Me!"). The alert is not being called.
Tried via Print Preview and Exporting. What is showing up in the
exported file is:

<td width="15%">getCMB(+3)</td>

Shouldn't that call the function? Am I missing a setting?

I am trying to code a ring, that gives as a bonus a complete level of a "Dragon

levels in "Dragon Disciple" it should stack.

I read all that BONUS stuff 3 times but maybe I am to wired in the end.

Any ideas, which tag I should use in the equimpent   .lst

Hi,

That is a tall order. There isn't a way to just grant an entire class
level by a piece of equipment. Assuming you mean BAB and Saves
Progression, associated ability and such.

The closest you have is for spellcasters - You can use ADD:SPELLCASTER|x
which will grant a spellcaster level for the purposes of spellcasting
but no other benefits.

The follow up tag is BONUS:PCLEVEL but again that is for granting a
bonus levels to an EXISTING spellcasting class...

I don't know if this would work, but you can try it for your game. [I do
know it works, see below]

ADD the Dragon Disciple Class normally (Yes, it will do the whole XP
stuff, ignore it)

Then create a template or ability...

Level Adjustment Buy down 1

VISIBLE:DISPLAY
LEVELADJUSTMENT:-1

I don't know if it will do anything in this case... It'd take a minute
to test it. Hm, only a minute, fine I'll test it. But that takes away
the sense of adventure... okay, well, be that way.

Do you want to know what happened?

It worked. Now, I feel that I deprived you of this opportunity to find
out for yourself.

Now, you asked what tag to use in the equipment to get this to work...
Well, if you really want it to be only when you take the item:

You'll need to test to see if it works (Both should)
Add this to the equipment:
     TEMPLATE:Level Adjustment Buy down 1

Simple and straightforward... the second method is:
Add this to the equipment:
ABILITY:Special Ability|AUTOMATIC|Reduce XP for Bonus Level

Make a new ability:
     Reduce XP for Bonus Level
     TEMPLATE:Level Adjustment Buy down 1

and there you go, a method to add the template via ability object or
the template direct by equipment. Note: I did not test these equipment
methods, I'll not deprive you further of trial and error testing. ;-)

I recently created a kit for a custom race. The race is Large. I used the code:

GEAR:Longsword SIZE:L LOCATION:Primary Hand
GEAR:Chain Shirt SIZE:PC LOCATION:Equipped
GEAR:Shield (Light/Metal) SIZE:PC LOCATION:Equipped

Note how I had to use "L" for the size of the longsword, but "PC" for the other
stuff. That's because when I used "PC" for the longsword PCGen equipped the
creature with a medium size version. The Chain Shirt and Shield came out Large
as expected.

Thanks,

Hey, Monkeys...when you all return from vacation in Monkeyland (no rush at
all)...I have a question:

A friend just gave me some LST data...but it's very old. From 2005! I know
there's the batch converter in 5.16.0 that migrates from 5.14...but I would like
to migrate from even earlier versions.

Are there other batch converters hiding, ones that make some of the earlier
migrations?

Also, is there an easy way to look at code and tell what version it's compliant
to?

Thanks,
Allen

Some monkeys don't take true vacations... Most of the monkeys need a
break, which means you're stuck with me. :P

For converting old sets, well, depending how old you are talking,
prettylst has a feature to convert *some* things to 5.10/5.12 era; for
5.12 to 5.14 Barak's script converter is great, and then 5.14 to 5.16
you can use the converter Tom includes with PCGen now.

Unfortunately, there isn't a versioning number system for data sets, the
closest we have are the OOC sets...

Here's a good indicator what version you are using:

In the class file is it: (Giving rough guess of version)
1 <> ADD:FEAT|Blah > 5.12
or
1 <> ADD:FEAT(Blah) > pre 5.12

Do you see
1 <> SAB:Something (Valid in all versions, though in core stuff it's pre
5.14)
or
1 <> ABILITY:Special Ability|AUTOMATIC|Something (5.14 or later)

That's a summation. For the scientific method, grab the different
incarnations of pcgen 5.6, 5.8, 5.10, 5.12 and see which one has errors.
Chances are one version will work, maybe two, that is where you know the
set works.

Thanks for the rules of thumb.

I think it's pre 5.12.

How do I find and operate Barak's script converter?

Is there prettylst installation documentation anywhere?

Is there a way to add descriptive text like "in desert areas racial bonus to
