Folks,
Thanks to all 21 who joined us last week.
I started by mentioning the iphone. For those who haven't heard, Apple has
a phone!
The best video of it I have seen is here:
http://revision3.com/systm/cracked
They pay about $600 for the phone, step outside the Apple Store and "stress
test" or dissect and destroy the phone! The smoke when they short out the
battery is cool.
We talked about scanning photos and slides. If you know how the picture
will be used, you should scan your original so that it will exactly fit the
specifications of the final product. For computer display it is usually 72
dpi. For printing it is about 300 dpi.
Scanner and printer manufacturers tend to inflate their specifications. For
scanners, pay attention to the "optical" resolution. The maximum resolution
numbers are usually "interpolated" or calculated from the optical resolution
and almost worthless.
For the best scan you should consider the source. A very sharp small
picture, slide or negative can be scanned at a very high resolution with
good results. If you have a very good original, you should be able to
reproduce it at any reasonable size with good results. If the original is
less than the best, you have fewer options or need to spend much more time
retouching it.
This Thursday, I will talk about eBay and PayPal. You can get a head start
by visiting www.ebay.com and www.paypal.com . We will wrap up about 10
minutes earlier than normal because the library has another group
immediately following us.
Next week, the 19th, we will not meet due to a scheduling conflict at the
library. We currently do not have alternate plans, but if someone has a
suggestion . . .
Please bring your suggestions to Thursday's meeting.
Cheers,
Rob
