I upgraded from my xv6800 to the Touch Pro 2 in September. I love the TP2, but it may just be the huge leap from the 6800 that is causing my glee. I’m a bit afraid to look at the Droid because maybe I switched too soon. Anyway, it’s faster with a bigger more beautiful display for starters.

My two cents

Good point, I did see that. However, I'm not seeing that it's seems to be a large issue since you can store a lot of the app data on the SD cards, I can root it or just live with fewer apps. I played with a couple droids in two different verizon stores and I found the droid was wicked fast, surfing the web was great and the apps I decided to install on the verizon demo phones installed in seconds and from what I've seen syncing everything with google services is pretty seemless. Having used a Palm 3 with Hot sync and then Active Sync for so many years I like the idea of using google docs, gmail and calendar a lot. I can still put the data on the SD card it looks like. Honestly, I think the biggest letdown thus far is no uBook on a droid at this point and no MS Money. Although to be fair, MS Money is dead anyway, so I wouldn't be surprised if Money failed to install on a smartphone with winmo now or in the future anyway.

I would have to agree that they should have put more onboard memory into the device if the OS isn't going to let apps be installed to the card without hacking the thing.

Don’t forget one major issue with the Droid (and it seems android phones in general) is that you can only install applications to the phone’s built in flash memory. I’ve been looking at the Moto Droid too but that is a big letdown IMO.

Hey Paul,

It's the "sticking with Verizon" part that puts a wrench on switching to that device. Also, I've read it has a capacitive screen. One of the advantages of sticking with WinMo for me is that I am pretty good at block recognizer, so that would be out if they scrapped the resistive screen out. Android phones and iPhones have been designed with finger touch in mind, which makes data entry a little slower than stylus imo, but using the phone a little easier since you can leave the stylus at home.

I did look at the imagio and that phone was much slower than the droid and the web didn't render nearly as well with that device. It seems like winmo is dated in terms of performance - I don't want a sluggish phone.

I'm thinking the Droid wins on these points:
* Hip and cool since it is the phone of the moment
* New fun OS to play with
* Java development (I'm learning Java at the moment so that means I might be able to play with phone sooner)
* Since Google, Verizon and Motorola are all throwing their support behind this device it is likely to have any issues patched up in a hurry and accessories will be available
* Apps are being made free and a lot of people who are geeks and want the latest thing will be releasing more apps for this phone
* The screen, though not oled is very very nice
* surfing on this device is very nice, I found it rendered the web very well
* the voice search thing is gimmicky, but I actually think I will find myself using it
* unlocked GPS for sure (Verizon likes to lock their phones down)
* physical keyboard (I think this is an advantage as it doesn't seem to add much bulk to the phone
* syncing with gmail would be pretty slick and I wouldn't need to keep paying for yahoo's pop3 (yes, I know you have pop3 with gmail, but gmail syncing seems to be a step above for syncing)
* I could stop using outlook and active-sometimes- I-sync and use google docs and calendar and just access things without needing to worry about syncing issues
* I could actually get the device now, as I've found a dozen rumors and several employees at Verizon who say they have no clue about Omnia 2

The Omnia wins on:
* Apps that are developed by companies that have been making windows ce applications for years
* I expect the battery life will be better (only 100 mAh more capacity but I think that screen is the difference)
* I can still likely use all my apps (though I know some of them likely won't leap all the way to 6.1 or 6.5, I've found a lot of apps I've had since my ipaq 3600 still work fine on my Axim)
* Windows Mobile (documents to go would likely give me this on an android, but would cost a few more dollars)
* PIM functions are core and solid in WinMo(nd that is something I really want in a phone, though I can likely replace those with some of the google tools, I don't know if they will work as well)
* uBook!
* the core video player
* I can install MS Money on my phone and sync it with my desktop (I have ms money 2004 and the cab install comes with that, I don't know for sure it will work on wm 6.x, as I haven't downloaded emulator to try it out)
* block script input available if I want to use it

So at first I was really thinking Omnia, but I'm leaning towards the DROID at this point based upon the information above..... if anyone can point out things that fix concerns, any logical errors in my thinking, features that are really great with either device or OS, or any other devices.

Ben,

I see we’ve been looking in the same directions.

I’m surprised you haven’t looked at the HTC HD2. 400x800 4.3 inch screen to the AMOLED resistive 3.7 touchscreen (nice) on the Omnia 2.

The Omnia 2 has the 2nd fastest processor I’ve seen on a Smartphone; 800mhz to the 1ghz (fastest) on the HTC HD2.

Everything else seems very similar except the built in memory (2,8,16 GB storage) which seems to be built-in on the Omnia 2.

The HTC has wifi b-g like the Omnia 2, but also has a router feature that allows wireless connections for notebooks.

I included links below for both @ GSMarena.

Anyone that's still in this group gotten a droid? I've finally decided my Axim x51v is going to stay at home and I'm planning on going to either the Omnia 2 or the Droid. I'm sticking with Verizon so I'm debating staying with WM or jumping over to the android OS, but I'm not sure what things I'll miss. I think I'm seeing most things I want to do can be done with the Android, but I'm curious to hear anyone else's experience with Android OS in general and the DROID in particular.

FYI, looks like uBook may support Android in future, but not a for sure here.
This is email I got when I emailed the author of ubook:

Hi David,

I was just wondering since the droid device seems to be so popular if you are
planning an android release of uBook? I'm strongly considering that device, but
I don't want to go without uBook as that is the number 1 app I use on my old
Axim.

Thank you,

Benjamin

Who knows at this point, I'm still trying to decouple it from Windows as much as
possible. Then move it from C to... Well we'll 'c'... Android / iPhone / Pal
Pre (Javascript? you gotta be kidding) / Blackberry...
Kind Regards,
David

Anyone that's still in this group gotten a droid? I've finally decided my Axim x51v is going to stay at home and I'm planning on going to either the Omnia 2 or the Droid. I'm sticking with Verizon so I'm debating staying with WM or jumping over to the android OS, but I'm not sure what things I'll miss. I think I'm seeing most things I want to do can be done with the Android, but I'm curious to hear anyone else's experience with Android OS in general and the DROID in particular.

I would be interested in hearing more about that device Brent.

I’m considering getting the Samsung Omnia 2, but I haven’t decided for sure. It’s not out yet, but the specs look amazing.

Combine that with increasing frustration with my xv6800 (2 years old), and I made the decision. No regrets yet. Very fast, much improved web browsing, and unlocked gps just to start with.

I tethered my TP2 with the HTC app that comes installed, but not in the programs window. Had to find it in the Windows folder. Real easy to get the connection set and fast for my purposes.
I've probably had this capibility all along with other phones but just now figured it out.

Michelle,

One problem I have with the net books that have Air cards built in, is how the Cell companies charge.

Most carriers charge double for the same data on an air card over a smart phone.

AT&T has a 5GB cap on Net Book/ notebook data, but have an unlimited usage plan for smartphones.

More and more people are switching to simple pre-paid plans because of the exorbitant prices of the contract plans.

Unless you rely wifi for net access, netbooks can be either limited, expensive or both.

I remember just a few years ago when texting which takes up a tiny amount of bandwidth was about a dime per text.

Now because it’s wildly popular, the price has risen to 25-30 cents per text.

This at a time when all carriers have greatly expanded their bandwidth.

I remember when Accu-Chek came out with the 1st at home Glucose monitor for diabetics.

Their business model was to “give” you the $200 monitor free.

But to use it you had to use these little strips. The strips cost them at that time about a nickel a piece to manufacture.

They sold for around a dollar per. Now there are about a dozen companies making home glucose monitors.

They all give you the monitor and charge about a buck a piece for the test strips. Strips that cost around a dime to make.

Something to think about when you get your next “free” upgrade.

I did look at the net books a little bit, but I have a laptop already, and I've been a Pocket PC/Windows Mobile user since about 2000. Combine that with increasing frustration with my xv6800 (2 years old), and I made the decision. No regrets yet. Very fast, much improved web browsing, and unlocked gps just to start with.

My guess is that the datacard may be faster.
I know that my lap top works the internet faster using walkinghotspot than my PPC works the internet.

Paul

Joe,

I talked to an AT&T agent who said unlimited is only available for smartphones.

If you use the smartphone (and tell them) with a tethered plan, it reverts to the 5GB limit.

I’ve heard that AT&T flags your cell use at 5GB and checks to see if you are tethered (without telling them).

It voids your user agreement. I feel if you pay for unlimited data use on the network, you should be able to use it as you please.

It’s like paying for water but being told you can’t make Kool-Aid with it.

Paul

Well, I almost switched to an iPhone, but Verizon would have charged me $475 to terminate.

Michelle,

Most netbooks load fast for several reasons.

!st they usually have XP (XP keeps the price low) running on a processor built for Vista.

XP is generally faster than Vista and running XP on a faster processor speeds things up even more.

Plus some netbooks have flash drives which can be accessed much faster than a conventional drive.

Also because they don’t have optical ( DVD/CD ROMs) drives, most people don’t install much software.

A couple of caveats about tethering a PC to your phone; It’s a good idea to have a separate firewall for tethering.

A lot of things run in the background, Anti-Virus, Windows updates etc. They can eat up a lot of GBs of data.

Also some companies will void your contract if you tether without their permission (fork over extra money).

Most netbooks don’t have the air cards. I read that one manufacturer would build a universal (add the sim card of choice and enjoy) unlocked air card. For you smartphone fans check out this ultimate HTC model; http://marcustavares.wordpress.com/2009/02/22/htc-touch-pro-3-a-dream-pda/

Hi Paul,

That is something to think about. Are there netbooks without built in air cards

I have a Verizon UM175 that I use and have a 5GB plan so I would want to stick

with that and not get stuck with a netboo that can't use my UM175

What I liked about the net books is the quick start up.

I can't do my business on a small handheld device but also don't always want

to wait while the computer boots up.

For example try searching for “Google * tricks”. Fuzzy Search: Fuzzy search is type of search made by fuzzy matching. Google returns the results for even the relevant keywords for your query.

For example when you search for ~music player, the Google search also looks for keywords like mp3 music, radio etc.

Number range: If the thing you are searching for has something to do with numbers or number range, then this Google trick is just right for you. If you want to search for a music player having memory between 10 to 30 gb then search for this query “mp3 player 10..30 GB”

The results will show you the information about mp3 players having memory

between 10 to 30 GB.

Page title search: The page title is the single most part of the page. The title depicts the content. You can search only in page titles using allintitle: before the query. Try searching for “allintitle:tricks”. This query will return all the pages having the tricks keyword n their title.

Lock or hide private folder in windows without software

Posted: 05 Sep 2009 02:49 AM PDT

Many times you face this situation; you want to hide some personal data from the other person using your computer. However most of the person uses any software for that which can be troublesome sometime. So here is the trick to lock any folder in windows without any software.

Suppose you want to lock the folder Data; in C: drive. The path for the folder is D:\ .

Go to D:\ and create a text file and type command;

ren Data Data.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D}

Now save this text file as hide.bat

Create another text file and type in it;

ren Data.{21EC2020-3AEA-1069-A2DD-08002B30309D} Data

Now save this text file as show.bat

Now you can see 2 batch files hide ; and show ; .

Press hide ; and the folder Data will change to control panel and you cannot view its contents.

Press show ; and you will get back your original folder.

You can move this folder to anywhere on your drives. But make sure you click on hide ; or show ; . File when it is placed in D:\ . else it wont work. Always remember the folder is to be locked and “show“ and “hide” files should be in same folder at the time of using them, after use you can move it.

Note: To rename your text files as bat files?

Just go to my computer->tools->folder options->go to the view tab.

Now uncheck the ‘Hide extensions for known file types’ then click apply.

Now rename your text files as bat files.

Increase your Internet Speed

Microsoft reserves 20% of your available bandwidth for their own purposes like Windows Updates and interrogating your PC etc. Don’t you want to get it back for your self? Here is the trick how to get 100% of your available bandwidth.

To get it back:

Click Start then Run and type “gpedit.msc” without quotes. This opens the “group policy editor” and go to: “Local Computer Policy” Then “Computer Configuration” Then “Administrative Templates” Then select “Network” then “QOS Packet Scheduler” After that select “Limit Reservable Bandwidth”.

Double click on Limit Reservable bandwidth. It will say it is not configured, but the truth is under the ‘Explain’ tab i.e.” By default, the Packet Scheduler limits the system to 20 percent of the bandwidth of a connection, but you can use this setting to override the default.”

So the trick is to ENABLE reservable bandwidth, then set it to ZERO. This will allow the system to reserve nothing, rather than the default 20%.

Icon with no name

Normally you have to have a name for an icon, just blank or spaces are not allowed.

To make a folder or file with no name, right click on it and select rename. Now hold Alt key and type 0160. Now the icon will have no name below it.

Become a Spaces Cadet

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 05:31 AM PDT

Spaces, one of the coolest new features of Mac OS X Leopard, lets you switch among multiple desktops.
For example, you might create a communication workspace for Mail, iChat, and Address Book, another for media programs like iTunes and iPhoto, and a third for video games. Then, instead of hiding/showing programs or dragging them around onscreen, you’d simply switch desktops. If you’re the sort of user who tends to have many applications open at once, Spaces is a godsend.
In fact, Spaces and Expose share a control panel. To access it, select System Preferences from the Apple menu and choose Exposé & Spaces.. Click the Spaces tab.
This is where you set the key commands for activating Spaces and switching between your desktops. You can also specify the number of desktops and how they’re arrayed in columns and rows. (If you check “Show Spaces in menu bar,” you can switch desktops using the menu bar icon as well as key commands.)
You also have the option of permanently assigning a program to a particular desktop. If, say, you always want iTunes to open in its own window, click the Add (+) button, navigate to the iTunes application, and click Add. Click-hold in the Spaces field to assign it to a desktop. Here, for example, whenever iTunes is opened, Space 4 will automatically be displayed.
Whenever you type your Spaces key commands, you’ll see a translucent overlay depicting the available desktops. Switch between them using the key commands you’ve assigned in the Preferences panel.
If you get confused about what’s assigned where, don’t panic — just press the Activate Spaces key command (the default assignment is F8). This opens a global view of all your desktops. Just click within any desktop to open it. You can also move items from one desktop to another simply by dragging them between windows.

Annotating PDFs in Preview

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 05:25 AM PDT

Under Preview’s Tools menu, you’ll find the options Mark Up and Annotate. Mark Up lets you highlight, strike through, or underline selected text within a PDF. Annotate allows you to draw circles and rectangles around parts of a PDF, append Stickies-style notes, and add hyperlinks.
To use Mark Up, choose the Text tool from Preview’s Toolbar. Select your target text with the cursor, and then choose a Mark Up option from the Tools menu (the choices are Highlight Text, Strike Through Text, and Underline Text).
To add shapes, links or comments, select a command from the Tools menu’s Annotate list (the options are Add Oval, Add Rectangle, Add Note, and Add Link).
If you’ve selected Add Note, simply click anywhere on the PDF. A colored tag appears in the left margin alongside the spot where you clicked. Its default text consists of your user name and the date, though you can alter or add to this by double-clicking on the note. To move notes, double-click their icons (those little cartoon-style balloons) and then drag them. When you double-click a note icon, you can also specify the note’s color and other attributes. To remove a note, double-click its icon and press Delete.
All Mark Up and Annotate tools can be summoned via key command. Also, if you use these tools frequently, you may want to add them to Preview’s Toolbar. (By default, they are not shown.) To add them, select the View menu’s Customize Toolbar command, then drag the tools you want from the pop-up onto the Toolbar.

All About Audio Chats

Posted: 12 Sep 2009 05:17 AM PDT

iChat is a great way to communicate and share files in real time with friends and colleagues, whether they’re across the hall or around the globe. With iChat, you can conduct text chats with anyone who has a MobileMe, AIM, Jabber, or Google Talk account. And if your Mac is equipped with a built-in iSight camera (or an external iSight or other FireWire camera) you can conduct video chats with up to three buddies at once.
But there’s another way to chat: via audio. You can invite as many as nine buddies to an audio chat, which makes it great for group communication. As with video chats, you can record audio chats with permission from the participants. Audio chats are especially useful for interviews, long-distance business meetings, family conferences, and other situations when you’d like to communicate verbally with more than a few people at once, or save an audio record of your conversation.
Audio chats require a built-in microphone or an external mic connected to the audio input port of your computer. If a telephone or camera icon appears beside a name in your buddy list, it means they too have the software and hardware needed for an audio chat. (A “stacked” telephone or camera icon indicates that your buddy’s computer has enough power to participate in a multiple-person chat.)
To start an audio chat, open iChat and select the buddy or buddies you want to chat with. To choose multiple buddies, hold down the Command key as you click on their names. Then click on the telephone icon at the bottom of your buddy list, or select Invite to Audio Chat under the Buddies menu.
When they receive your invitation, your buddies simply click the Accept button to join the audio chat. All audio chat participants are listed in the chat window along with their buddy pictures. Each participant also has an individual sound level meter, which makes it easier to tell who is talking.
To enable recording in an audio iChat, select Record Chat under the Video menu. A message is sent to all participants asking for their permission to record the chat. To grant audio recording rights for this chat, your buddies click on the Allow button. When participants want to leave the chat, they just close the chat window. Recording stops when the person who initiated the recording exits the chat.
Recorded audio chats are saved by default in the iChats folder in your user’s Documents folder. You can change this default location under the General tab of iChat Preferences, and search for saved chats by date or title using Spotlight. You can also play your saved audio (and video) iChats in iTunes.

Adding Automation Through Folder Actions

Posted: 09 Sep 2009 02:31 AM PDT

This is a simple AppleScript (think of an AppleScript as a built-in automation for your Mac, just like Photoshop actions add automation to Adobe Photoshop). Mac OS X includes some cool sample scripts (actions), or you can download about a bazillion from the Web for free.
To assign a script to a folder, Control-click on that folder and choose Configure Folder Actions from the contextual menu that appears. This brings up the Folder Actions Setup dialog, where you toggle various scripts assigned to folders on and off, or even edit scripts (if you know how to write AppleScripts). Click the plus sign (+) button at the bottom left of the dialog to add your folder to the list (this actually brings up a standard Open dialog showing your folder, so click on your folder in the dialog and click Open). Once you do this, a window will pop down with a list of built-in sample scripts you can assign to this folder, and their names give a cryptic description of what they do. Pick the one that sounds like what you want to do (to replicate my Drop Box warning, choose “add — new item alert .scpt”) and click the Attach button (you’ll see your newly assigned script appear in the column on the right of the dialog).. Now click the Enable Folder Actions checkbox at the top-left corner of the dialog. This is a global on/off switch, so any folder to which you’ve attached scripts is now “activated.”
By the way, once you’ve applied actions to a folder, you can turn Folder Actions on or off globally by Control-clicking on any folder and choosing Enable Folder Actions or Disable Folder Actions from the contextual menu.

I love my Verizon Samsung Omnia! I switched from a XV6800 and have been very happy I did. Warning: if you like to “fiddle” with your phone’s setup, this baby will eat up hours of your time. You can set up your screen to display in 3 different ways – the traditional today screen that can mimic your Outlook today screen, a Samsung widget screen and a Samsung today screen which looks a lot like the Iphone screen. Then from those three, there are other modifications you can make.

Well, I almost switched to an iPhone, but Verizon would have charged me $475 to terminate.

Michelle, actually, I'm not sure. But I think other carriers have their own versions. Not sure which ones. I do have the Verizon TP2.

Hello, all. I just upgraded from my HTC XV6800 to the HTC Touch Pro 2, and, WOW!, so far I am loving it. It's only been a couple days, but it is faster, smoother, gps unlocked, and I'm finding new cool features all the time. If anyone is interested I give more details as I have it longer.

I had much the same experience with Verizon when I changed to my HTC x7501.
They caimed that their 2.5" screens were eqivalant to the x7501's 5: screen. I paid their blood money ($250)filed a complaint with the BBB and will never go back.
