If it is WM5 then it is NOT going to reset with the battery, so you will have to perform the hard reset. Let me know if you still can't figure this out...
Beth, Here is a little trick in resetting iPaqs. Press the reset button and remove immediately the battery. Then all your apps will be wiped out :-) Good luck....
