Luca,

Is there a reason for not touching the ground in Venice? Is there a law
against tripods or something like that?

Maybe it just wasn't long enough?

I get a lot of errors with those pages with Internet Explorer on XP-pro
(IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp-sp2). Had to kill it several times.
The VR's are great though!

@Eric - Agreed, weird because I just ran into this script, had a
problem with it and, viola, this message is posted.

@Pablo - If I understand you correctly, I need to add the w and h
parameters to the input lines like so:

i n"stitch-blended-sm.jpg" w4000 h2000
(4000x2000 being the size of the input image).

This time I get no errors but the results aren't cube faces either. I
get 6 750x750 images but they're all the same image -- each shows the
entire equirectangular image, slightly warped (approx 360x185)
centered within each image.

Assunto: [PanoToolsNG] Using Steganography to embed copyright info

I just tested a program that embeds a message or a file in another file.
http://www.securekit.com/

I wrote a small text-file with copyright info, and embedded it into one
of my panoramas.
http://link.bergmark.com/stegtest

It's embedded in all of the images used by the panorama-viewers (jpg-,
mov-, swf files), and it's totally tranparent. If somebody were to
steal any of the files it would be easy to prove that you are the owner
by getting the file and running the decryption on it.

Of course (as always) it isn't an iron-clad solution, since if they
would open the file in Photoshop and re-save it, the info is lost.
However it does provide some degree of protection, and might be worth
the extra step before publishing to the web....

I have opportunity to get a slightly used Zenitar 16mm fisheye with a
Nikon mount at a very attractive price. I'm just not sure whether it
has a good spot to fill in my lineup. I use a Fuji S2 and Nikon 10.5
mm, old manual Sigma 8mm/4 and a Tokina 12-24. It falls right in the
middle of the Tokina's zoom range.

Is anyone using one of these? How many shots for a spherical? Is it
as sharp as I have heard some say? Worth picking up for under $100?

Sorry if this question is already discussed ...

I'm leaning towards buying a Sigma 8 F 3.5 lens , OTOH I see here some
very good panoramas by great shooters like Ulf Bergmark ( nice river boat
photo Ulf )
ae made using 10.5 .
So is there som hidden features there .

I want the 8 mm because I would skip the adapter, lens hood shaving, get manual
F stop
and looks like maybe even better overlapping / fewer images per panorama .

There must be some advantage to 10.5 - is the sharpness so much better ?

The new Sigma is an excellent lens, but on a 5D your resolution will be
lower than a 10.5mm. Yes, the Nikkor needs to be shaved and changing the
f-stops is a bit of a pain.
With the Tokina 10-17mm you will not have those problems and as added bonus
the option of making very high resolution spehicals with the zoom set to
15-17mm. The sun shield also needs to be shaved off the Tokina and this is
even harder to do than on the 10.5 nikkor. But a good camera repair facility
can do it for you and the combined cost of lens plus professional shave will
still be less than the Sigma or Nikkor.

CAREL ,
Thanks for your suggestions,
Tokina looks certainly like an interesting option,
As a DX lens , can it be used on 5 D,
I remember some APS sized lenses will not work on 24x36 mm...
( my kit lens from 400 D will not work on 5 D )
Anyone with a sample of 5D/ tokina combo ?

Also I'm trying to get a grip of FOV on those fisheye lenses, will 8 mm Sigma
get me
more of the view ( fewer images to take ) or is the difference to 10 / 10.5 mm
very small.

I own already a Sigma 12- 24 mm lens , and I think I get very nice detail from
it, but it is
jsut too many images to take, so the panoramas tend to be less dynamic .

Michel Thoby has done extensive testing on the Tokina and also shows how to
remove the metal sun shade. But I would have that done by a camera repair
person.

This is due to a bug in the nona parser, which doesn't handle some scripts
where the parameters are mixed between i and o lines.

For the time being try the attached script:

------------------------------
p w1280 h1280 f0 v90 u20 n"TIFF_m"

i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y0 r0 p0 v360
i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y-90 r0 p0 v360
i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y-180 r0 p0 v360
i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y90 r0 p0 v360
i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y0 r0 p-90 v360
i w4000 h2000 n"pano.tif" f4 y0 r0 p90 v360

This works with both PTmender and nona.

ciao
    Pablo

The 10.5 acts as a portrait cropped circular on a 5D, whereas the 8mm
is a full circular, where you throw away nearly half of the sensors
pixels. You should know that the 5D has a lower absolute resolution
(pixels/mm) than f.e. a Nikon D70, which means that you get a higher
resolution panorama with the Nikon and the respective lens.

I'll prepare a table on the wiki as soon as I get time since this
questions arise over and over again...

best regards

I live in a small town and my camera repair shop is the size of a shoebox. He
took my 10.5mm lens apart to remove a chip that had somehow manifested
itself in between the elements.

In a city like Stockholm you should be able to find a repairshop that will
take this on. Hey, they build Hasselblads in Sweden :-)
Or you can do it yourself. Michel Thoby provides excellent step by step
instructions.

Cool! Were you in the house at the time, if so, how loud was the
lightning strike?

The sample was moved under the microscope objective. For each move,
three photos were acquired (blue, red, and green color, corresponding
to three fluorescence filter sets). The image acquisition was a pain in
the ass, taking 3 days (with an average of ~5 hours daily). As you can
see, should be 231 images for each color (one image is missing, look in
the middle left part, of the section).
First I've tried with PTGui 6 and a lot of pictures were not correctly
positioned. PTGui 7 is better regarding the control points system.
The combined image was obtained by layering the images in PS. The upper
layers were set to difference, resulting in combination of colors (for
example, green + red makes yellow).
The sample was a section from a human mole. The medical diagnostic is
not relevant here. The coloring procedures done here are only
experimental.

Here is what I sent to the Bixorama people. I hope that someone else agrees
:-O
They're basically giving instructions on how to scrape the web's QTVR's and
re-author them.
Punks.

--------------------------------------------

Hi,

As a member of the fairly close-knit VR community, I find your home page
AWFUL.
http://www.outerspace-software.com/bixorama.html

You are promoting as the number one thing on your website an action which,
if it is not illegal behavior, will surely result in illegal behavior.

It is my priority as a member of the VR community (we are the people who you
are teaching the world to steal images from) to point out that this strategy
appears to be the quickest route to failure.

After all, who will your customers be, if not the creators of VR content?

Why do you need to tell us how to steal QTVR's from a web cache? Do you also
want to give instructions on how to decompile a SWF file to show the cube
faces? If someone wants to crack open a panorama and make something with
it, shouldn't they ask the author? (Can we crack open *your* program, and
change it into something we find more interesting? probably not....)

I sincerely hope that you will reconsider this very poor judgement. If you
do, I'm certain that instead of drawing the ire and wrath VR photographers,
you will instead have their excited support. Wouldn't that be a better
result?

Jeffrey Martin

Me, no. I was actually taking panos at a festival at the time (well,
I was attempting to; the rain and mud was incredible) - but my wife
and younger son were in the house at the time.
She said it was ridiculously loud and that she felt it as much as
heard it. Her eyes were closed tight at the time (she was showering),
but she said she still saw an incredibly bright flash.
The house filled with soot (so much for the shower!), both our
fireplaces were pushed an inch from the wall, and a number of things
- mainly the wired networked stuff, but also my lovely amplifier
(sob) - were fried.

(But it isn't a total disaster - the insurance company says they'll
cover it all.)

I shot two more panos while I was on the scaffolding, and I've just
added them to that gallery: http://www.thehelpful.com/photos/v/family/

They aren't as dramatic as the one with the chimney close-up, but the
third was taken over the space where the ladder is. I think the nadir
patch worked fairly well.
