They already have a sort of color "reference card" on the rovers, it is part of
the MarsDial-
which incidentally, comes from Seattle :)

Got it. Although really it is is lower *quality* that we're talking
about. Resolution, although related in a sense, means something
slightly different. At least, with digital images it is used to refer
to the sensors and the final pixels.

Thanks for the further info and the DoF link! I was thinking in terms
of individual shots, but that's interesting data on that wiki. Stuff
for me to ponder. :-)

Keith,
I'm not a rocket scientist but did learn that the delay for the introduction of
teh Betterlight new 10k scan back was all about that no lenses resolved what it
would do properly.. Some how they did get to a compromise and did release the
back.. In my converstaions with them at that time they spoke of the issues
related to that level of resolving using optics.. Further we must realize that
today optics are multi part.. So it's probably not just a matter of saying make
another one that does it.. In the smaller sensors they have been packing more
and more pixels.. but as spoken in these posts that has been at a price.. So it
makes sense to make larger sensors..so the info that is captured isn't shrunk as
much. The optics are actually doing a conversion...making a big image fit on a
small sensor.. It appears that what we are experiencing is degradiation when we
get to a certain threhshold at out current optical technology. The present
answer is larger cameras it seems.. So tommorrows Nikon may look like my Pentax
6x7 with a face lift and a Nikon logo on it ( hopefully a little lighter
too)....or a new version of a Sinar 8x10 with a fixed sensor in the back of
it.with large pixel sizes... Whooo Hooo.

But then, a full-frame sensor camera does mean working with different
lenses to get the equivalent effect. So a rough equivalent of the
10.5mm would be 16mm, wouldn't it? Something like the old 16mm
fisheye that I used briefly on my old Canon A1. Assuming the
manufacturing and glass quality was similar, that would give
approximately the same view but reduced chromatic abberation.
(Slightly reduced depth of field too, but that's physics for ya!)

I don't think it is really a matter of being beyond the resolution of
a fisheye, as that's just analog-world optics. The Sigma 8mm and
Nikon 10.5mm fisheyes are designed to produce acceptable images on a
cropped-area sensor, and trying to capture an image using a broader
part of the image means going beyond the design intentions. So...
isn't the important thing simply using a lens that is actually meant
   to cover a full-frame sensor?

(I think that's what you meant in your first post, but I wasn't sure...)

Yes you can see it better in this panorama which is the first spherical in color
from 2005.
http://www.panoramas.dk/mars/mars-dec-2005.html
And here is the only 3D Quicktime VR from mars.
http://www.panoramas.dk/mars/mars-mcmurdo-3D.html

They are not added yet to my mars site which I published back in 2004.
http://www.panoramas.dk/mars/

I published the first panorama from january 2004 only 2 hours after it was
online at
NASA.
Also the black and white Cubic pano which as you can see is made from a fisheye
lens is
nice. As it is not stitched you can see the Rover much better. And you can also
see the
famous 1997 panorama as a cubic if you scroll down.

Always fun to have new lenses to dream about. What bothers me is that they
aren't putting depth of field scales on these lenses. Sure, they have
tremendous depth of field, but on the Sigma 8mm, the scale lets me easily
set hyperfocal. I really miss that on so many of the new lenses, not just
the fisheyes.

You have any non-quicktime versions?

I've decided on eliminating quicktime and java on all production computers.

No more security issues, long downloads, long plugin loads, , only a small
percentage of websites are still using these technologies, and fractional
percentage of clients have it installed as well.

Well, I might have to install java.. one day, but I might get lucky.

Really? I didn’t know you had to install quicktime to use an ipod.

All I know, is I haven’t seen quicktime video in nearly a year while browsing
websites. If you don’t need quicktime for video, VR is the only thing left
being published using quicktime.

Since quicktime hasn’t been updated for VR in years, it’s given up on that
end too. Plus Quicktime has been updated to DROP support of advanced functions
used in VR. Counting this, I don’t see what the point is anymore of supporting
it.

But enough of thread highjacking. If it wasn’t for the bloatware which is
quicktime being attached to ipod, quicktime would be long forgotten.

Sorry again for the thread highjacking. Please do not reply, under this thread.
I just wanted to see a panorama.

HD View is for windows only, and is a very very small download if you do not

Sacha QT is all over the place. It is mostly unseen, I have some
video on my website in QT but I use QT heavily in video editing. The
main reason you see so much Flash for video is YouTube, it has taken
over video on the web but it is vastly inferior for the most part but
it has 99% market penitration so it looks like it has won for the
moment. It seems like the buzz these days is for youtube like video,
even though most of it looks really crappy. I have been putting video
on my websites for about 10 years all in QT.

It is unfortunate that Apple has dropped the ball with QTVR support
and interactivity, most all of it broken in the current releases of
QT. It looks like flash is going to be the huge winner with
interactive apps. With faster computers flash is getting to be the
real gorilla for interactive web stuff, flash for so long was
terrible for the end user since most developers couldn't optimize it
properly and it took forever for it to load and sucked so much
processor power.

Oh well!

enfuse is part of the enblend project, they are both written by the
same author.

Only have 2 canon lenses, the only 2 zooms I own.
10-22 and 24-85. Nice for snapshots and theatre. Never used for panorama
(test only, ok)
All the rest are Contax primes. Some Nikon, some Leica
For my taste and scopes, 1-zoom are shit, expensive pro ones are
expensive pro SHIT, a kind of compromise that gives me things I do not
need nor use in change of things I'd need better. 2 - I still have to
see a Canon lens that makes me WOW. 3- we are getting poor and poor,
quality of lenses dropped in the last years, none seems like to spend
what was ALWAYS needed for a good lens. Look at prices of Zeiss ones
(Nikon or Minolta/Sony mount) not to talk about Leitz... (also a bit
incostant in quality through time and series!) Well, good AIs Nikkor and
SMC Pentax in the 80 and 90 were closer to Zeiss and Leitz than they are
now.

I always worked hard to pay myself the fever of photography, always
bought 2nd hand equipment...
I switched back from autofocus, Nikon F90 to F3, I switched to Contax,
when it was unexpensive in the 2nd hand market, back again to Rolleiflex
TLR, than to digital...

A link to the enfuse on the panotools wiki may help clear things:

http://wiki.panotools.org/Enfuse

I'm not sure where the Mac compilation of enfuse Matt posted came from. The
XFuse Mac
front end is a Kekus product. The last enfuse version posted on my site was
from Ippei.
Previous versions of enfuse were from me.

correction. The last Enblend (not enfuse) version posted on my site was from
ippie. Previous
versions were from me.

Wow - I thought the drought in the south-eastern US was bad! Prague
is really hurting much worse.

And I am sure we have all seen the story about the photo from Mars
where it looked like a human figure was walking in the landscape, but
NASA scientists said it was just a rock. Now we know - it was
actually a pedestrian in Prague!

Biggest scandal since the so-called Moon "landings" that were
actually in the Arizona Desert. Humph. Thanks Jeffrey for your
investigative journalism blowing this one wide open!

misunderstanding?)

Unfortunately, bad news...
Visual Studio 2008 does not seem to be able to produce code
compatible with Windows 2000.
This means that the minimum requirements for EnfuseGUI will be
Windows XP SP2, with .NET Framework 2.0.

I have also found the reason for the "weight problems".
It had to do with the users' locale setting. In certain locales
EnfuseGUI choked when entering decimal values. This has now been
fixed and will be included in the next release.

If you use Firefox you can add the panotools.org wiki to your list of
search engines, i.e. browse to <http://wiki.panotools.org/> and then
have a closer look at the search bar that as a default uses Google.
Click the little trangle in the search bar and at the bottom of the drop
down list you will find an entry
   Add "PanoTools.org Wiki (English)"

The same works for the mailing list archives. That search engine is
available from <http://www.panotools.org/mailarchive>.

Both are often enough very useful for me.

For those of us that disabled the search bar (and use the google bar like
me), there is another way.

Right click the search input field on <http://wiki.panotools.org/> and choose
"add keyword for this search". In the popup window, type something like "pw"
(without quotes) in the keyword field. Now you can search from your address
bar by typing something like "pw dof" (again without the quotes).

Serge.

There is even a one click solution to search for selected text (I
learned from tinyurl): Create a new bookmark (favorite), name it to
your liking and put the following line in the "Location" ("URL,
"Address") property (without line break of course):
javascript:void(location.href='http://wiki.panotools.org/Special:Searc
h?search='+document.getSelection())

Place this bookmark in the bookmark (personal) toolbar or the Links
section. Now mark a word and click the toolbar link, you get directly
to the wiki search result page.

Ingemar,

What is the range for weight values? Should it be 0>x>1?
