I just saw some hotels features 360 videos of their rooms and facilities.
Videos, not VR's. Maybe because it's easier to take videos rather than create
panoramas.

With the entry of HD capable cameras, would the workflow change? I mean we can
just take HD videos and then capture the frames that we need for the VR, right?
As a photographer I cringe at that thought, but if it is true, then we should
adapt to what technology will be available to us at a much easier workflow
(maybe, I dont know that for now)

When I was at college in the 60's learning how to make black and white prints
our lecturer said.
" and one day you will be able to go out and take photos your camera will radio
your pictures back to the studio and when you get back your prints will be
waiting."

we thought, "Oh yeah ? fat chance of that happening!"

I'm not completely clued up on this but I think new iphone will have gps tied to
photos. so gps exif can be automagically applied to "proper" camera photos by
comparing time stamp.

You might want to mail Dani Fuchs. He did something alike for the World Wide
Panorama theme "Atmosphere".
Take a look at: <

Well, the one thing you can't possibly get around is the need to maintain a
fixed nodal point, especially in a confined space. Video doesn't free you
from the need for a tripod and pano head. Furthermore, if you snatch frames
from a video, you'll find they're likely to be of poorer quality than
comparable stills, because stills can be taken at a lower shutter speed, and
thus capture more light with more depth of field. Those are limits of
physics, not technology.

Does anyone know of some code/plugin for gui/mouse actioning and flash
panorama (FPP) specifically?

Essentially, just being able to use the mouse click to fire off some code
with the pan, tilt coming from the pano position under the mouse..

In order to place a spot/image at that point simply.

I am going to use an html based structure. I started in that direction
and realized it opened up a lot of interesting possibilities not
possible with the Flash Player. I'll keep everybody posted as I
encounter/solve any security issues that arise.

Also, I discovered a solution to the tedium of repointing all those
links - hire my friend's 13 year old computer geek son at $15 an hour to
do it! I should be able to get the entire thing done for $300.

Hey Mick
THANKS a lot  :-)
nice to know that you liked it so much :-)

To be honest this huge number of pageviews is good for all of us,
since it shows that panoramas are getting more and more popular everyday.

Hans Nyberg started the revolution with the incredible Panoramas.Dk showing
fullscreens on the net,
and now we are all following the wave.

Cheers

Hitting Mainstream is a great thing for all of us. Here is a link I
came across this morning.

http://www.mtv.com/photos/?fid=1611667&view=thumb

Its 360 fashion on the red carpet.

Congrats to whoever got the gig, but I could have thought of two or
three things that I would have done.

Great job on the million, I could claim a few of those hits. but I am
humble. I know I have not been there 212,000 times!

I saw the setup about 1 year ago somewhere - forgot where :( but it was the
same procedure.
Yes- they stopped half way, so much effort should have better presentation
then just a movie.

Congrat Ayrton - great number.
I´m working on it - may be in about 10 year I can hit this number :)

Couple of quick comments...

First, the no-parallax point about which we rotate a camera lens when
shooting panoramas should properly be referred to as the "entrance
pupil", rather than nodal point. The confusion is understandable.
There are two (front and rear) nodal points within a lens system, and
one of them is even used for the rotation alignment of a swing lens
panoramic camera,. But the term "entrance pupil" is what we should be
using to describe the no-parallax point of a lens for properly
shooting a sequence of images for stitching together as a panorama.
(There is still lots of confusion about this, since the term "nodal
point" was improperly described back at the beginning of QTVR in
Apple's documentation.)

Secondly, if you are going to shoot wide angle images for stitching
with a video camera, it is wise to also align the pan axis of the
camera/lens with the entrance pupil of that lens. However, the longer
the focal length of the lens, and/or the greater the distance (of the
nearest subject) from the lens, the less critical this entrance pupil
alignment is for stitching. Stitching applications such as PanoTools
and PTGUI have gotten fairly good at compensating for minor
misalignments in many instances.

However, consider that "video VR" does not necessarily require
stiching, in a number of instances. One example is the use of one-
shot parabolic mirror optics, such as EyeSee360's GoPano. Every frame
shot already comprises a complete 360-degree view.

Furthermore, I have seen traditional video movies used on web sites
that very much had the look and feel of an interactive VR panorama,
but were simply a wide angle video recording done on a fluid video
head tripod. The result looked very much like an auto-panning VR
panoramic movie. In one instance, the viewer could even click on the
movie window to drag left or right. The result was that the video
scrolled forward or backward, essentially increasing the forward speed
or reversing the pan direction.

With a setup like this, entrance pupil alignment is irrelevant,
because there's no stitching involved -- just an old-fashioned video
stream (that happens to be a slowly panning camera movement).

Sometimes, it's good to take a step back and look again at what we're
trying to do. On occasion, one might find that it's better to go with
a different, existing technology than it is to spend endless hours and
energies trying to make a proverbial round peg fit into a square
hole. Figure out what it is that you want (or need) to do -- your
desired end result -- before choosing the tool(s) that will help you
best create it.

Subject: krpano and tiles in ZIP files

This turned out to be less work than I thought.
I created a php file which will fetch the required tile from a ZIP file.

The <image> section in the XML file was modified as follows:

<preview type="CUBESTRIP" url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/preview.jpg"
/>
<image type="CUBE" multires="true" tilesize="607">
    <level tiledimagewidth="2126" tiledimageheight="2126">
     <left  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_l_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <front url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_f_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <right url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_r_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <back  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_b_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <up    url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_u_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <down  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l2_d_%v_%h.jpg" />
    </level>
    <level tiledimagewidth="709" tiledimageheight="709">
     <left  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_l_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <front url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_f_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <right url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_r_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <back  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_b_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <up    url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_u_%v_%h.jpg" />
     <down  url="unzip.php?tile=krpano.tiles/l1_d_%v_%h.jpg" />
    </level>
</image>

unzip.php looks like this (no errorhandling though)

<?php
$tName = (array_key_exists("tile", $_GET)) ? $_GET["tile"] : "";
$zFile = "krpano.tiles.zip";

$z = new ZipArchive();
if ($z->open($zFile))
{
      $im_string = $z->getFromName($tName);
      $im = imagecreatefromstring($im_string);
   $z->close();
}

header("Content-Type: image/jpeg");
header("Content-Disposition: inline");
imagejpeg($im);
?>

I've tested this on my server, and it works fine. This is great for me,
since my webhost only allows 50.000 inodes and I'm already using 28.000.
If I plan to publish some gigapixel panoramas, then the remaining inodes
would get eaten up very quickly, but I think with the above aproach, I
might be able to survive a little longer. :-)
I'm not sure how much extra CPU-usage this kind of fetching will create
though. On a shared-hosting environment I might get into trouble, but
only time will tell.

Yes, that sure does a big difference on the way the stats can be
presented. Ayrton's stats are based on pageviews though, not hits.

Has anyone compiled Hugin 0.8 for mac or pc?

Hasn't 0.8 been kicking around for over a year, with some awesome new
features (like opengl pano preview window) but it just didn't get compiled?
Or am I misunderstanding something?

Willy Kaemena and I taught a workshop last week to 25 university students.
While I have had surprisingly perfect results from hugin pressing the "align
and do everything automatically" button, it was not the case with these
students, who got really frustrated - the UI for Hugin being generally
pretty clunky (understandably - I'm not blaming anyone, I'm only saying -
and no, I don't have time to improve the UI for Hugin myself ;-)

Hits is another way to look at, but not that good,
because each element, each file is a "hit" ;-(

Mine is based on "pageviews"
and since every panorama has ONE page, it is a way to know how many
panoramas were opened.

On hits, my numbers for May/2009 was :
2 million
845 thousand
585
HITS

hugin-0.8.0 is nearly ready for release, and yes is has lots of cool
new stuff. There are recent snapshot installers for Windows and OS
X, but these are for getting feedback from testers and have known
bugs:

I did something just like this for Zoomify some years ago... it raised
enough flags on their end that I switched hosts for that project to one
that didn't care about inode counts. It added a lot of CPU load, IIRC, to
an otherwise low-load viewer since you had to get PHP involved with every
tile operation... it also adds a lot of additional i/o overhead since
there's several extra reads (parsing the ZIP header) per tile.

I played with other approaches - the most obvious is to pre-parse each ZIP
file and create an index in a database, which holds just the file offsets
of each tile within the ZIP. Assuming the zip is saved without compression
(since there's no real benefit) then you can unpack files from it pretty
quickly with a lot less load with simple file reads by byterange than
actually using the PHP zip libraries for each tile read.

Depending on your host, you may also consider storing tiles in the database
- seems stupid, but in many cases there's a lot more excess database
capacity than storage/inodes and it'd be trivial to store each tile in a
blob and write a php shim for it.
