Hi,

First of all I'd like to introduce myself (although iv'e been posting for quite
a while now) I'm Milo a web developer, and panographer(?) from the philippines.
I've been working on a street view project here in my country using a motorized
pano head, a canon 450d and sigma 8mm (because i cant afford a 3 dslrs on an
agnos mrotatorR, or a ladybug).

My plan is to shoot the major city here (makati city) on weekends and early
mornings when there are not much people around. When I can afford a one shot
rig, then I will start shooting even with traffic.

Here is the link of that test shots. I had to go down the car to press the
button of the electronic box because the cord is not long enough to reach the
interior of the car. And on the first shot that's when I put the camera on the
roof, that's why i was on the ladder. :)

http://www.360philippines.com/street-view/yen-street/

It will eventually look like this

http://www.360philippines.com/makati360/map.html

That's it. Just sharing the link. Anyone here had a similar project? I know jan
is working on diystreetview and wim on pano cycle. I also saw panodrive on
360cities.

Thanks,
Milo

Hi Milo,

in my opinion shooting "in the crowd" with a lot of people around is more
interesting, but also more difficult.
With a bit of experience you can shoot from a monopod, mounting the camera
with a lensring. Fullframe cameras are better for this job, because with a
Nikon 10.5 or a Tokina 10-17 fisheye (at 12) you need only 4 pictures for
360°.

Quite interesting is the wooden BoBracket from www.bophoto.com/bracket
Another do-it-yourself possiblity: www.langebilder.de/rohrschelle.htm

Hi Milo,

nice project you have started.

Please allow me to advise on the time of day to take the panoramas:

Shooting in the early morning and at weekends does not work.

Check out this panorama site of Oslo, Norway:
http://kart.finn.no/?lng=10.7365&lat=59.91488&zoom=17&mapType=finnvector&streetv\
iew=true

They toke the same approach as you, and shot most pictures in the early
morning to avoid having to blur faces of people for privacy reasons.

Unfortunately the site leaves a kind of "The day after" impression: Like
there has been a nuclear war and nobody survived. No people to see.

I don't know how you will solve this problem, just to alert you to this.

Jan

P.S.:
I would like to work together with you and Wim to make free panosalado flash
viewer work for these kind of "unlimited" tours. I hope you carry a GPS
logger when shooting?

I assume you'll shoot from a pole pointing down such that you can shoot
from below the lowest part of the heli. In any case the pilot should
keep the position as precise as possible, especially if you have to pull
the camera and head up in order to adjust the next row.

If there are no tall buildings below parallax won't be an issue though,
not even for the row close to the nadir. If there are tall buildings you
can use one edge as a fix.

I'm sure you know that you can mix different lenses in PTGui or hugin.

So far my ideas...

Hi all,

When creating interiors with an outside view, that outside view always looks (to
me at least) like it was pasted directly onto the windows or into the door
frame. What can I do to at least simulate some distance, like there really is an
'outside'? Would it somehow be possible to build some kind of layered parallax
into these images?
Or something else that would have the desired effect?
Technology of choice would be Flash10, but a solution using DevalVR would be
nice too :) Ideas anyone?

Here's an example of such an interior, but the same goes for car interiors or
anything similar of course.

I think adaptive dynamic range would be good to realistically display
this kind of panos. Spi-V used to be good in doing this. No idea whether
one of the flash players can do it as well.

See two SPi-V examples here:
http://fieldofview.com/spv/show.php?file=adr.xml
(It seems as if the example is somehow broken, it loads sharp but gets
blurred then. But you can get the idea...)

Wow, these are in fact quite impressive! The only thing I do not like
about it is how slow the transition between bright/dark is. But maybe
this can be fine-tuned when coding the XML files.

I wonder if someone with ActionScript capabilities would be willing to
provide a FPP plug-in that does that...

I would suggest not trying to utilize a pre-fab theme, since these sites,
basically look like they were put up in a couple hours. And essentially,
it's quite possible to do so.

You could try to start from an organized baseline and use the "framework"
theme built by my brother.

Thanks Erik, I completely overlooked that possibility!
I can see the effect really helping enhance the inside-outside impression. But I
think I would try a very subtle application, just enough to work, but hardly
noticeable, especially with really large windows (like in a car). Am I wrong in
thinking it would double the amount of data as well? That would be a rather high
price to pay then.
Hmmm, what else would work.....

The Spi-V implemetation of ADR in fact needs two panoramas to blend
between. However, Helmut Dersch implemented an extension to jpeg (called
fjpg) in order to store a kind of HDR in jpeg format. AFAIK currently
only PTViewer 3 uses this format to display ADR panoramas. I ever
wondered why no one took this up...

The paper:

An example:

Now, how did you actually get the exterior well exposed (or even too
dark)? If you blended it by hand you simply can increase brightness for
the exterior a bit. Anyone expects a sunlit exterior to be brighter than
the interior (and even a bit washed).

I bet you didn't use exposure fusion, since it normally doesn't create
such unrealistic looks.

best regards

I fail to see how deliberately creating more overly-broad patents on
panoramic technology "improves the human condition".

Thanks for the info,

but could you please clarify what exactly is patented?
I don't fully understand what is said in the link you provided, too much
legal talk for me ;)

For instance, from what I read it says that Imatronics now has the
patent for any device that produces panoramic video and video transitions
between panoramas?

Is this right? If so am I the only one that smells iPix...

or is it only the algorithm that converts and projects
the video onto a sphere?

Don't get me wrong it's a nice work and it should be protected, it's just
that
I'm a bit afraid of this patent thingies

In other words, you made a spherical panorama viewer.

" The present invention discloses a method and apparatus for creating
interactive virtual tours. In one embodiment, panoramic imaging systems
characterized by a 360-degree lateral field of view and a vertical field of view
that is usually less than 180 degrees are utilized and polynomial-based
interpolation algorithms are used to correct distortions in the input panoramic
images, video or rendered scenes, permitting the use of an arbitrary panoramic
imaging system characterized by the ability to generate a seamless 360-degree
panoramic view of the imaged scene in each single image frame. The input
panoramic images, video or rendered scenes are used to create spherical
environment maps that are packaged into completely immersive (giving the
impression of being there) virtual tours that are rendered on a display device
by a viewing engine that corrects perspective distortions in the spherical
environment maps contained in the virtual tour packages and permits a plurality
of viewers to view any portion of any of the panoramic scenes in the virtual
tour package in a manner that is free from distortions. The present invention
also discloses a control engine for representing the individual panoramic scenes
contained in the virtual tour package in multi-dimensional space and/or time and
for transmitting control signals to the viewing engine that cause the viewing
engine to render any particular panoramic scene selected by the viewer and any
view window on the selected panoramic scene desired by the viewer. Furthermore,
the control engine communicates bi-directionally with the viewing engine and
provides a means of indicating which particular panoramic scene is currently
viewed by the viewing engine as well as a means of indicating what portion of
the selected panoramic scene is currently displayed by the viewing engine.
"

I'd like to point out that my stupid Java viewer (MSJV) displays a selectable
portion of a 360 degree by 180 degree image seamlessly WITHOUT using a
polynomial-based algorithm.

Enjoy your patent...
