you've probably seen this,

As Antonio mentioned, a CAVE is what you describe. They even made them with 4
walls and a ceiling, but these turned out to be slightly problematic in the
sense that humans apparently need oxygen... In a CAVE there would typically be
one "main" viewer/person whose head was being tracked, so the perspective could
be corrected for what ever position the viewer was in.

But why settle for a cube? Cubes are boring ;-). You can project onto nearly
everything!

The camera looks like a Ladybug indeed, but the video quality doesn't. This is
seriously some of the best ladybug footage I have seen sofar. How come these
guys can get quality video out of these cameras, while google clearly can't
(ref: google arts project).

I guess you all mean the yellow ladybug like camera at yellowbird's front page.
I too agree that the quality, stiching and blending looks really good in this
video if it is a ladybug.

A few weeks back there was this other fantastic 360 video, the one filmed from
the helicopter
(http://www.nimmobay.com/media/360-video/360-video-nimmo-bay-helicopter-resort)
that was shot using six "prosumer grade" cameras (see full info at
http://360videoblog.blogspot.com/search?q=nimmo). The stiching and blending of
the heli video was for me the best I've seen so far at that time ... much better
than that of dodecas or ladybugs ... and I guess the resulting resolution should
be more than enough as to record full HD ... processing of the separate images
looks quite time consuming though! (I just wonder the 6 camera+lens combo used
in this video)

regards,

Antonio

Actually Yellowbird was involved with the Nimmo thing.

I guess some clever processing.

Hi,

Here is a Palmela 2011 - update:

*For those without time to read the detail =>* Over 60 registered attendees
already signed in, we now have two hotels fully packed with Palmela 2011
attendees, a third hotel under
contract<http://www.palmela2011.com/featured/palmela-village-golf-resort>
to
start accept bookings from today (March 1) with up to 100 rooms available!
Speakers <http://www.palmela2011.com/info/conference/speakers> and
sponsors<http://www.palmela2011.com/info/conference/partners> being
announced at Palmela2011.com <http://palmela2011.com/>. Now it's a good time
to sign up for Palmela
2011<http://www.palmela2011.com/tutorials-and-conference-registration>
.

And here is the more detailed update:
*
*
*Conference Attendees:*

As of today, March 1, we have over 60 attendees registered for the
conference or tutorials + conference programs, this is the highest number of
registrations in the first month of any previous IVRPA conference.
Hopefully we should be able to start publish the attendee list on the Palmela
2011 website <http://www.palmela2011.com/info/conference/attendees> in the
coming days.
If you want to register for the conference, now it's a good time, check the
ticket prices here <http://www.palmela2011.com/tickets> and register
here<http://www.palmela2011.com/tutorials-and-conference-registration>
.

*Conference Speakers: *

We have some great speakers lined up
already<http://www.palmela2011.com/info/conference/speakers>, Ignacio
Ferrando Margelí, Joergen Geerds, Nicole Tung and Jason Barr, Thomas K.
Sharpless, but we ain't stopping here, more speakers will be announced
during next month as we aim to cover all hot topics in the panoramic world.
If you are attending Palmela 2011 and want to give a talk here,
contact us<http://www.palmela2011.com/about/contact>,
we still have some 30min and 20min speaker slots available.

*Conference Sponsors:*

We recently opened sponsor registrations and already Nodal
Ninja<http://www.nodalninja.com/>
, Tourwrist <http://www.tourwrist.com/>, Kolor <http://www.kolor.com/>
and Garden
Gnome <http://gardengnomesoftware.com/> showed their love for this
conference by signing in as Palmela 2011 Sponsors, Vendors or Partners.
Check the terms here <http://www.palmela2011.com/info/sponsors> and sign in
by registering your company to become a sponsor
here<http://www.palmela2011.com/tutorials-and-conference-registration>
.

*Conference Accommodation:*

The first hotel, Palmela Castle Pousada was sold out on Feb. 14. The second
Hotel, the S. Filipe Fortress Pousada in nearby Setúbal, sold out yesterday,
Feb. 28.
Given the high demand we are experiencing for this conference, we went to
great lengths to find a third hotel to accommodate everyone that wants to
attend Palmela 2011 - The Conference from June 1 to 5, 2011.

The new hotel is the Palmela Village Golf
Resort<http://www.palmela2011.com/featured/palmela-village-golf-resort>
and
although not up there in the Castle, it's located only 10 minutes away from
the village on a recently built golf resort.
We hope this new option with up to 100 rooms available will settle
everyone's need for a room to attend Palmela 2011.

*Palmela 2011 Exhibitions:*

Several teams are working on many different exhibitions and we expect to
start announce the exhibitions in detail next week.
We have planned the following Palmela 2011 exhibitions to open to public on
June 2 and 3, 2011:

    - Gigapixel Challenge.
    - Masters of Contemporary Panoramic Photography.
    - Panos for the People group exhibition (distributed across several
    places on Palmela Old Town).
    - My Planets (stereographic projection group exhibition).
    - Three individual exhibitions from renowned panoramic artists

For some of the exhibitions we will launch in the coming days a request
for submissions from the panoramic community.
Everyone will have equal chance to participate, independently of being an
IVRPA member or not.
Exhibitions will open on the first week of June, remain on display during
the summer and close on August 31.

I was thinking the problem with the Google Arts Project was that the camera was

PS: This book was discussed a lot on this list, and even offered at a discount

The yellowbird's carmera does look like a yellow colored Ladybug.

The Ladybug 3 has 6 2MP cameras connected by FireWire Capturing at (15 FPS JPEG
compressed 6.5 FPS uncompressed) frames per second. (800Mb/sec). Full
resolution 2700X5400
http://www.ptgrey.com/products/ladybug3/Ladybug3_360_video_camera.asp

The YellowBirdCamera
6 cameras. double glass-fiber stream at 1200 Mb/sec
http://www.yellowbirdsdonthavewingsbuttheyflytomakeyouexperiencea3dreality.com/p\
roducts/technology/camera
The images are saved uncompressed and stitched later.

But most of the info I find about YellowBird indicates they are using Ladybug 2
& 3 cameras.

I heard rumors of a Ladybug 4 in the works. Could the YellowBirdCamera be the
beta testing? Or modifying a Ladybug 2 or 3?

My guess is that their showreel was shot with a Ladybug 2, and the
Blof recording was a Ladybug 3.

The Blof video is 2048x1024 at 16fps, close enough to a Ladybug 3.
Ladybug 2 supposed to give max 1024x768 at 30fps.

No resizing here..

There is not yet, so far a I know, a commercial array camera made of GoPro
Heros, but there will be soon, and I predict it will blow the Ladybug away.

BTW if you look up near the ceiling on the Blof video, you will see stitching
artefacts that suggest 8 cameras around, or more.

No, there are 5x1 camera's, If you look at bit at the xml, you can
find the movie itself. (and grab a frame, throw it on krpano :)

Hi everybody,

together with several photographers, not only panoramic photographers,
we built a multimedia-tour about the halls of the fishmarket in Hamburg.
This will be one of many contributions, which will be published in a
kind of an online-magazine with reports about the "culinary cosmos" of
the city of Hamburg. The idea is to tell photographic subjects by using
not only classical photography, but also by using film, sound and
panoramic photography, so to find new possibilities to show our medial
output by connecting the different visual disciplines.
Although the site is in German, it might be interesting to watch, at
least I wanted to share it:

And, of course, feedback is much appreciated.

Greetings

Just to add some more fuel into this fire, I´ve just read at the "new" panoguide
forum about this company: www.ttx.co.uk that films (among other things) 360º
video.

They use ladybug and dodeca (why does dodeca always have to show such a very bad
blending?)

I have really enjoyend checking their "photo gallery" at the 360º video section
where you can see some set ups for the recordings.

(not sure though if all these pictures are theirs ... some look familiar from
the old inmmersive media site ... can't remember though!)

Everyone can get or make a 360 movie cam, and its just time before it
becomes affordable for every photo/filmo-grapher. (and higher res).

Yellowbird is smart. Actually they invest heavily in creating their
name as an interface designer and related tech, and if their
programming is as good as their marketing they will even survive 360
degree movie krpano.

The Flash-based panorama-viewer game might get a bit more interesting shortly,
now that a public preview of the (codename) "molehill" technology is available:

http://www.bytearray.org/?p=2810
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/flashplatformruntimes_incubator.html

This uses (shader-based) 3d hardware acceleration, not unlike what is/will be
available with WebGL.

So what does this mean? If you are willing to install that preview, compare
these two versions of the same movie and compare the processor load:
http://www.bytearray.org/wp-content/projects/molehill2d/displaylist/
http://www.bytearray.org/wp-content/projects/molehill2d/molehill/
(the latter should hardly tax your cpu at all)

For now, the only remotely panorama-related techdemo I have found is this one
(which only works with the preview build of the flash 11 player):

Now if only this was full circle vertically like a regular 8mm on this format

Samyang 8mm on Nex could be done before with a Nikon to Nex adapter but now
there is a native mount

I shoot panos using NN5, Samyang 8mm and D300. Normally 4 around, 1 90 deg for
Zenith and 2 90 deg down for Nadir (using NN adapter and moving tripod).
Question is, should I pitch lens down or up shooting 4 around?
Still having problems stitching Nadir, but it is getting better.
Thank you!

You only need to worry about coverage, pitching up or down is only to
provide image coverage for your sphere, there is no other pro or con.
If you wish not to shoot a zenith shot and wish your clarity at the zenith,
you would pitch up. This would eliminate the need for a zenith, however it's
generally better to shoot the zenith if possible, or if you have an
automatic pano rotator you use on a pole.
So if I've contracted myself already, there you have it.
BTW, I shoot without a pitch for normal shots.

Opinions are divided on this. Because most of my panoramas are taken
outdoors, where the sky is largely blank, it can be hard to find
control points that link the zenith shot to the trees or roofs on
the horizon, so I usually point slightly up, leaving a hole at the
nadir. The nadir is where the foot of my monopod comes, and it is
also where the Peleng lens I use tends to produce halation. So I am
resigned to taking a zenith shot, which eliminates both the hole
and the halation.

If I shoot precisely horizontally, the Peleng gives me tiny holes at
zenith and nadir that can be easily cloned out. But when there is
halation (and there usually is), it tends to occur at and around
the nadir, so a nadir shot helps. And it looks like a sizable
"smear" that is hard to clone out.

I don't really see the need to take two zenith shots, though.
