I know, I know, but apparently these lenses still haven't yet been added to the
list of lens types in the Canon Makersnotes menu in ExifTool.exe : (
Hopefully they will be included in the next update.

Cheers!

You can do it manually. In ExifToolGUI select your images, use the
"ExifTool direct" switch and enter:
-n -L -v0 -Canon:LensType=13
or if you don't want to create a backup copy:
-n -L -v0 -overwrite_original -Canon:LensType=13
as a command line.

This will set the EF 15/2.8 fisheye. See
> http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/Canon.html#LensType
(or http://tinyurl.com/6g3hox5 ) for a list of lens type values. Make
sure the underlying exiftool.exe is the most recent version.

I didn't try direct mode before, but that command works and it's easy to do.
Thanks for sorting that out Erik!

Now I still need to find out how to set the ShortFocal and LongFocal Tags
manually. With the 5D (old type) + the SIGMA 15mm, ShortFocal is set to 24mm,
not 15. With the 5D MkII and the same lens they both are 15mm, so they should be
fine. I'll see if DPP accepts the modified RAW files in a minute.

In the list of CameraInfo tags for the EOS 5D, ShortFocal and LongFocal are
indexed 147 and 149 resp., for the MkII they are 232 and 234, but I don't know
yet how to set the correct values in manual mode.

Ah, easy!
Just had to add the ShortFocal tag with an appropriate numeric value to the
string, so it reads like this:

-n -L -v0 -Canon:LensType=13 -Canon:ShortFocal=15

and DPP now also lets me access the 'Lens aberration correction' menu for my 5D
+ 15mm SIGMA Fisheye RAW files using initial settings that should fit my lens
very well, excellent!

Cheers!

The focus distance set in DPP's 'Lens aberration correction' has a significant
influence on the effect of the settings for de-vignetting and CA removal, but
even if you apply a recipe file containing values for these corrections, the
shooting distance still needs to be set manually for each individual RAW file or
it will always be at infinity. This is not very convenient if you want to
process a larger number of images in one go.

I tried the parameters listed below in the command line for ExifTool/ExifToolGUI
to see if they had an effect on those corrections, but alas they did not.
-Canon:FocusRange="5"
-Canon:FocusDistanceUpper="3"
-Canon:FocusDistanceLower="1"
These change the EXIF as intended, but apparently these are not the ones needed
for the lens aberration correction in DPP.

Does anyone know how to set the focus distance in Canon RAW EXIF to make this
work?

Hello. I am approaching 400G of photos that I am currently storing on an
external 1TB hard drive and until recently, I thought was being backed up by
Carbonite daily. I just found out that Carbonite only backs up the hard drive on
the computer and does not allow backing up files from any external drive.

I am looking for suggestions for storing my digital photo files safely without
having to mortgage my house to pay for the service.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Purchase 2 more terabyte drives, keep two always in synch and weekly move the third offsite anywhere.. Microsofts synch toy is pretty good for doing this.. and terabyte drives are cheap

I've been using secondcopy for many years, it works great and is very cheap. It
lets you back up whatever you want whenever you want to wherever you want, with
as many backed up versions as you want, even via ftp to the cloud.
With a couple of extra 1TB drives and an ftp account you'll be safer than the
bank :)

I had the exact same experience with Carbonite but unfortunately after a disk
crash in which I lost some vital data and had to pay for very expensive data
recovery services. Incidentally, I had the devil's own job getting Carbonite to
stop sending me reminders and sales pitches long after I had vowed never to buy
anything from them ever again!

I suggest another 1TB disk!

Has anyone had decent luck with Gigapan software? I’ve been using Antpano Giga, but the latest update broke it – tried on three different computers and crash on all of them. Hard crash whenever blending hits stage 2.

Purchased the upgrade for the newest PTGui, but the new Grid View does not work on interior panoramics – worked fine on a skyline shot, but failed miserably on an interior shot.  Randomly rotated and swapped images.

Gigapan Stitcher (came with the Epic Pro) is OK, never crashes, but it does a poor job blending.

Microsoft ICE does the best job so far, but misplaces some images and puts them in the wrong place – and rotates them 90 degrees.

All in all, none work well on interiors when shooting smaller rooms.  I shoot a lot of interior panos and can’t seem to find any software that does a good job.

Any ideas or tips? I’ve asked in the various support areas, but still don’t have an answer.  Kolor (AP Giga) just stalls and asks useless questions (what make is your camera?) I think the guys at PTGui are over-taxed with support questions.  Just curious is anyone else is having these problems.

iOS is a unfortunate nightmare for us all. Each iOS device must be
considered/tested alone per revision or update. While Apple hardware in general
is closed and solid, their software is unique to each platform. and different.

360cities, is not the issue here, it's Apple. Make sure any customer contracts
spell out maintenance $.

It's a Tower of Babel like never before as Apple, Facebook, the industry, etc.
change constantly without warning.

How many times has your computer/applications updated today?

cheers

Robert

OK, thanks for all the advice.

I did this:

-n -L -Canon:LensType=490 set to canon EF 8-15mm f/4L USM

-n -L -Canon:LongFocal=15 max zoom

-n -L -Canon:ShortFocal=8 min zoom

-n -L -Canon:LensModel=Samyang8mm

-n -L -Canon:FocusDistanceUpper=3

-n -L -Canon:FocusDistanceLower=1

-n -L -Canon:FNumber=8

-n -L -Canon:FocusRange=10

-n -L -Canon:TargetAperture=8

Many of these probably have no effect and the ones that do probably could be
further optimized but it does work for my Samyang 8mm.

In the lens correction screen any peripheral illumination is very bad so turn it
off.

For CA, slide the bar to '0', then tweak the R/B sliders for best results. A
single position does not give the best results everywhere in the image so some
compromise is made. Mine are both just under the furthest right positions.

Thanks, and if anyone can offer more optimized settings for the Samyang 8mm I'd
like to hear it.

If you want real help, you're going to have to supply much more specific
information. Project files, etc.

Just looked at what you posted on the PtGUi forum and it's also simply not
enough.

Stitches gone wrong for so many reasons require full documentation to solve.

What kind of interior shoot is this? How many pictures and how where they taken?
I always use PTGUI and I never have problems nor can I complain about the
support from Joost or the support forum.
I also wouldn't say that asking for your camera make is a silly question as on
different models orientation data which influences alignment in stitcher
software is treated in different ways.

BTW the -vo option just gives me an superfluous or invalid option error so I

Have to completely agree with Jrgen, PTGUI support both from the forum and from
the developer is first rate as it works today.

So far your issue sounds like a user error.

This is probably just a javascript bug in 360 cities wherein they're not properly checking for the orientation of the device (there are callbacks for ondeviceorientation and you can also look at the page body width IIRC).  The only thing different from being linked from facebook is possibly a link that 360cities themselves generates and the referrer likely being set as from facebook (although this practice is dying with javascript redirects).  I.E. programming can be hard, and it's likely that 360cities just missed an edge case - no need to develop conspiracy theories.

Well let’s see – user error – been doing this for 25 years, over 15 years on computers. Had PTGui since 2004.  It’s been working fine for ages.  Still works fine – but PTGui can’t do gigapan stitches with lots of vertical and horizontal lines or shots with little detail – so they came up with the grid system. No orphaned images, but unacceptable results.  AutoPano Giga simply crashes. Yep, lots of user error there. Crap program.  AP Giga 2.5 has more bugs than a termite infested house. I’ve produced thousands of panoramas in older versions of both programs.

As for PTGui, I stated they were probably busy. It’s only been around 10 hours, so I asked here.  I did not expect “It’s user error” – totally useless.  If all you have to do is spout off, then shut up.  You are not helping. I am so sick and tired of people sticking up for lousy software and poor support.  Kolor is only one example. Asking for camera make is idiotic – I am stitching edited images, not camera raw files.  Rotation is not an issue.  I provided crash information and more – instead of helping, they took me to task for a typo and stalled. I understand the guys at PTGui need more time to answer – but I actually expected intelligent answers here, not “you screwed up.”

Try justifying this PTGui mess:

Grid before optimizing:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rickthephotoguy/6206445055/sizes/m/in/photostream/

After:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/rickthephotoguy/6206445021/sizes/m/in/photostream/ - > basically ignored the grid.

I followed the instructions for the new PTGui grid system to the letter. Tried a few stitches. Exact same settings on my pano head and software. Outdoor shots – stitched fine. Indoor shots - garbage.

New computer, clean Windows install – nothing installed but my stitching software and PhotoShop. The results from MS ICE were better than either PTGui or AP Giga. AP Giga crashed before anything can save or be edited – can’t get any project files.  No point in creating a PTGui file when the results are so bad.

Hi David,

That -vo parameter should be -v0 [minus vee zero].

Also you do not have to feed ExifTool/ExifToolGUI a series of individual
commands, you can cluster them in one single string.

Such a string of commands could in your case be like this:

-n -L -v0 -Canon:LensType="490" -Canon:FocalType="2" -Canon:LongFocal="15"
-Canon:ShortFocal="8" -Canon:FocalLength="8" -LensModel="Samyang 8mm Fisheye"
-FocalLength="8mm"

There is a limit to how many characters such a string can be, but you can make
it quite long. Just make sure you separate commands by spaces, and, for good
form, put the actual values between "".

Also you can save and re-use your command strings in ExifToolGui in the 'Edit
Predefined' sub-menu of the 'Exif direct' menu.
The interface for doing this is a but clumsy, but it does work.

Cheers!

Oops, made a mistake:

-FocalLength="8mm"

should be

-FocalLength="8"

Sorry 'bout that.

Yess, found it!

For pre-setting the 'Shooting distance information' in Canon DPP's 'Lens
aberration correction' menu add this command to your ExifTool direct string:

-AberrationCorrectionDistance="value"

Example:

-AberrationCorrectionDistance="0.5"

This value (0,5) will set the focus distance parameter for the lens corrections
to the middle of the slider. Default value is 1 (one), and sets the slider to
infinity. 0 (zero) will move the slider all the way to the left, at the closest
possible distance.

Cheers!

Turns out that, as far as I can see, this Shooting Distance parameter can only
be *modified*, not created in ExifTool. This means that the RAW files must first
be processed in Canon's DPP, so the complete set of CanonVRD tags is added to
the EXIF of those RAW files.
How inconvenient for processing pano series : (

How is your external drive connected? Is it via USB? I wonder if it had an
eSATA connector if Carbonite would still think it was external.

The system I use is an internal RAID - 2 2TB drives - and an external
Cavalry box that holds 2 2TB drives in a RAID array as well. I synchronize
the two drive arrays so that whenever I leave the house, the external drives
go with me. That way, at work, I can get stuff done during lunch if
necessary, then synch when I get back home. Adding something like Carbonite
as a third destination would give me an extra level of comfort for those
times when two simultaneous meteorites take out both my home computer and
the external drives sitting on my desk at work. I just hate it when that
happens...

Hi!

Try to uninstall Antivirus software - Autopano Giga crashes with Avast

Hey Rick,

I can understand your frustration (just wouldn't word it the same). Gigapanos are a pain because everything you try takes such a long time - even when it turns out the wrong path.

The best luck I had in the past was by using AP Giga for alignment only. Making good use of localized optimizations and cluster-based repairs. But for rendering and blending, I never trusted AP. Instead I always saved the file in panotools format, and loaded that into PTGui. There, I wouldn't optimize again, but only render the stitch.

Hope this helps.

That could be another way out - downgrade to the version that you know is working correctly.
