It seems for 6+2 shots you need no larger than 14mm rectilinear lens or no
larger than 17 mm fisheye lens.

An 8mm (sigma?) is also an option for few shots (3 or 4), and might get you a
good resolution panorama with the D800.

I've had one of the older Nikon 15mm f 3.5 Rectilinear for ever .. Is that acceptable as compared to some of the newer lenses? I don't recall ever seeing much on the group about it.

this will be cool to align a pano using IMU data. unfortunately, you'll need a
$500 IMU to get data that is even remotely usable.

Maybe in a few years it will be a reality for hackers, and maybe in 5-10 years
(seriously) it will be a part of cameras.

Oh, you can already do it with a smartphone camera, of course :) (if you have
the proper kind of app that will write this IMU data to the image metadata)

one of the keys to offering cool hardware on kickstarter is being able to offer
it for less than $100. then you can get a lot of virality and impulse buyers.

kickstarter is really awesome.

Jeff, I wouldn't expect any sensibly priced system to be capable of providing
perfect template working.
My purpose at this stage is to be able to place the images in roughly the right
position, much the same as using a grid, simply to avoid false matches when the
images are not aligned at all using normal automatically placed CP's.
The magnetic sensors in use currently are quite adequate for the above, but the
speed of updating could be improved, at present the systems tend to work on the
GPS concept of providing async. updates rather than taking the reading at the
point the shutter is pressed, but this will require the GPS and compass systems
to be integrated with the camera, but that we will have to wait for!

How would you rate the usability of this board? The resolution sounds
pretty good.

resolution != accuracy!!!!

the sensors on your phone have at least 0.01 degree resolution, but the results
are crap unless you do some very smart filtering.

and even then you will get gyro drift.

the reason an app like photosynth works at all is because they are doing a lot
of realtime image matching to keep the camera viewfinder aligned with what you
have already shot. don't let the simplicity of the user experience fool you -
what they have built is an engineering marvel!

generally, the pitch and roll data can be fairly accurate without any very
complex filtering, because they are using gravity. but the yaw - this uses the
compass or the gyroscope (and the accelerometer to some degree) and both of
these are subject to drift, or being wrong.

look for ben newhouse's tech talk if you want to learn more :)

Yes, both versions run smoothly here. It is very nice. However, I can

Nominal, yes. In practice I doubt a Sigma 8mm is up to the camera
resolution, especially not in the outer regions.

YESS! It is the seam line. You can see it clearly only in the 2nd clip, sd, but it is always there. Video compressions are NOT done for this. ;-) Specially if you use unusual video image sizes.
The seam can be resolved, using other players that use cubefaces video (Thomas pano2vr one, i.e.) or can be very well masked, having a full week to play with video compressions and sizes. But for the compromise of codeability, customization and final size... I'm stuck with KRpano!!

I played with D800 and a shaved 10.5 nikkor

pictures here

D800 pixel density (wonder why Dpreview dropped the good habit to give the value!) is 207 pxel/mm The 10.5 was projected with hires APSC in mind, and gives stunning results on a D7000, 16megapixel APSC (DX), that has 211 pixels/mm.
Line/mm performance in optic is going radial geometrical law (the more distance from the center, the more the lines/mm that are resolved, decrease) and is depending on aperture too.
I'm SURE that 10.5 used at f6.3-f8, as usual for panoramas will be able to handle even the new D3200 at 24megapixel APSC.
I'm even sure enough the 16mm 2.8 Nikkor is good enough for the D800, and ebven more sure that the incredibly good 15mm 2.8 Sigma will.
I've doubts about Tokina 10-17 and Sigma 10mm, both just a bit under the line.
Any use of the 8mm 3.5 Sigma would waste a lot of panos resolution in black pixels

Crop factor is maybe 2.5X -- so what HFOV from a 8-15mm Canon say
A use finally for the 4.5mm Sigma perhaps
The critical thing for my dreams for a Canon mount Raw video camera like this is how much rolling shutter it has. Is it a new gen CMOSIS global shutter sensor. Then you can stabilise fisheye footage perfectly -- without residual rolling shutter waviness. Finally perfect transition movies.

Greetings!
Here is a test pano made with the 800e and a 16mm nikon.
I used Matt's settings for the D200 on an 360p Adjuste head, taking 6 round +z & n.
PTgui produced a 1965 x 8328 (1.55GB) tiff which I've converted with krpano.
When it stops raining I'll do an outside test.

The two main camera magazines in Japan, Nippon Camera and Asahi Camera, both carried detailed comparisons of the D800 and D88E in yesterday's editions. Far too much information to summarize here. But in short there is a slight but clear advantage to the 800E for certain kinds of subject, the main difference being a more "solid" or "three dimensional" look to highly detailed structures. Moire was only visible in 800E images under extremely rare conditions. Both articles remarked on how much more sensitive the higher pixel count made images to the effects of mirror shock.

You are as tidy as I am.
I could read all titles of your books. Isaac Asimof chronology of science and discovery, HDRI handbook, Corinne's manual, etc. etc.
that is a twenty thousands f***ing pixel panorama. It may be a bit of moire in the Denon CD reader grill, but it may be not. 16mm Nikkor may be at its limit, but correct focusing is now the limit.
Gooooooood.
