(looks better if you up the resolution on playback and choose B/W in the 3d
options and choose fullscreen)

this is a frenzied crowd scene (gambling on Anzac Day) shot handheld over my
head with a Gopro3d rig. Because I was in one spot I could use the masked area
of the building in the background to stabilize the shot with PTGui (and
simultaneously align L and R views and level and convert to Vedutismo). If I was
moving through the crowd this wouldnt work and I would have to use other
stabisation software like Deshaker for Virtualdub. One advantage of fisheye
lenses for post-stabilising is that the wide view often gives you unobstructed
static areas in all the shots (eg. the tops of buildings -- which can be used
for efficient tracking by PTGui etc)

Actually when I got there I realised this would be a good scene for a regular
panorama -- I will have to make one if I can next year

I have found a low-cost combination of tripod and monopod that works very well with my four-around panoramas. I use a small tripod, with short legs of the sort often used to hold lighting units in studios, with a ball head on top of which I attach my monopod. I have Velcro'd a bubble level to the shaft of the monopod and rely on this to get the shaft truly vertical. The ball head I unlock so that the shaft turns freely about a spot that doesn't move. I found that when I turned the monopod on its normal rubber-clad foot, it would often "walk" a little--enough to make stitching of seams crossing close objects a real pain. With this light and eminently portable combination I regularly get average CP displacements of about one pixel with a maximum of about five. "Very good."

@Jurgen,
keep in mind that is a long, sturdy monopod, and that it can be paired with a 2nd monopod reversed on it (the way I did a lot of 3m high shots)
@Hans,
I also used a small, welldone chinese tripod with a long monopod inserted as central column (it was the right diameter), just before we made the Venice meeting. But I never mounted  it with the original column and the rotator between the 2, coz it was decreasing stability.
Later I also completely reversed the scheme, using larger tripods, and attatching the camera to the small edge of the monopod..
This increases stability and highness reachable. Though Agnos rotators and Manfrotto 300n are sturdy enough, I always prefer to rotate the tripod column and to have a straight connection between the tripod column and the monopod. I think my way  is less confortable, but more simple and secure. Did you upgraded that setup after the gondola shot? what directions took?
@all,
I used Feisol once. My impression was very good. I have many Manfrottos, one Gitzo, a Giottos, and 2 Berlebach, that are the ones that I'm mostly attatched to.

So spending a whole day last weekend to calibrate all of my cameras and lenses
with Adobe Lens Profile Creator may not have been worth the effort?
Still, I have good geometric distortion correction and vignetting information
which I don't think Adobe could auto calculate for one-off photos.

The automatic CA correction is an independent option and does not really belong
to the profiles.
I think it is a failure putting it in the options for the profiles. It should
have been together with the defringe option.

Silly question, but could that data also be used to *apply* these lens flaws to a clean photo?
That could be really useful for compositing.

Hi,

I very often use the placeholder $n.xml and $n.swf for the names. From there, that always walk hand in hand.

What do you want to apply? Certainly not CA and lens distortion.
Vignetting can be easily applied but of course there are a lot of
plugins that do exactly that.

CA can be applied with any program that has manual CA correction,
including PTLens or any panotools GUI (hugin, PTGui, etc) if you
separate the channels into single images.

Lens distortion can be applied with panotools GUI's as well. Simply
enter the abc parameters manually...

For the abc parameters that won't probably work. You can get a feeling
what they do if you download abc.xls from http://www.4pi.org/downloads/
and play with the sliders.

Yesterday, I tried making a template with a panorama shot in the garden (bewteen
showers!). I then used the template to stitch a panorama which I shot in my
kitchen. That came out ok, which was encouraging: no visible stitching errors.
Today, I packed the tripod, M1L head and camera in a back pack and shot some
panoramas at the river Ouse at Barford, and they, too came out rather well.
This is one (no control points, and straight out of PTGui):

http://www.johnhpanos.com/barf-no-cps.htm

I took a viewpoint nadir shot but that was left out of the stitch shown here.
The camera was Canon 5DII + Canon 8-15mm fisheye at 15mm. Tripod: Feisol
CT3441S.

Nice!!
Do you use the G3?! I own a GF2 and a EPL1 (Oly) and the Samyang 7.5 that is wonderful.
I'm thinking hard, if I'm to give up all APSC Canon system and keep only fullframe and a mirrorless.
I'm waiting for the GH3 to see what it takes, how it does compare with Nex7 etc. and then I'll make up my mind. I'm very interested about video performances too.

Today, I packed the tripod, M1L head and camera in a back pack and shot some panoramas at the river Ouse at Barford, and they, too came out rather well.

Tripod: Feisol CT3441S.

That really is astonishingly good for a pure template-generated panorama
with no control points. I wish there were some way for templates to work
with hand-held monopod sequences. <wry grin>

greetings!

that is indeed "astonishingly good...", but it may also be slightly misleading.
when looking at images such as these, in the context of discussions on
equipment, people sometimes forget the most important component of the chain:
the human behind it all. just because the honorable johnh can get these
results, does not mean that i, using the same equipment, would get equally good
results. i know you know this, but perhaps a reminder is not out of order...
cheers,
pedro

ps: john, why do you shower before and after making panoramas in the garden?!
;-)

That's a very good stitch if you haven't done any adjustment.
Can you tell me how many photos did you take?

Do you have a link which gives an idea on how it can be done?

Thanks

No adjustment. I took 6 shots around at pitch 0° One zenith at +75° and two
nadirs at -90° (one rotated by 180°). I also took a shifted viewpoint nadir
shot, but that needed a few control points to align it with one of the two nadir
shots. The viewpoint patched nadir version is at:

http://www.johnhpanos.com/barf-no-cps-vp.htm

(And before someone says that you can manage without the two nadir shots by
tilting the horizonal row down by 10 or 15°, I do know that but prefer to have a
smaller zenith hole to fill when there are clouds blowing across above, which
are a headache to deal with).

Dear Peter

Our friend Joergen Geerds
will be showing his 360RIG

The revolutionary feature is the lack of a nadir blind spot !!!

Without comparison with the Italian one from the link below.
