I want to respond to the person who wrote about Yad Eliezer's baby formula fundraiser. I too saw the link online saying that I could feed a baby tomorrow. $5 buys enough formula for one week, so that the babies don't suffer like that email poignantly explained. Here's what happened.
I made a small donation online, because I am a "poor college student." (Fortunately, in this case, small donations have a big effect.) A few days later I received an unusually kind thank you note, asking me if I wanted a gummy wristband, like the Lance Armstrong kind. I said "sure, why not, but don't waste your postage and effort on one, send me a bunch, and I will sell them to my friends."
The students at my university in Boston were very generous — some gave me $20 bills; no one turned me down. The first batch of 25 sold in two hours — that’s $125 — 25 babies fed for one week each, or one baby fed for half a year.
I asked them to send me more — this time I got 120 bracelets. The bracelets sold themselves. I made posters, announcements, emails, and a big cardboard bracelet as a model. With virtually no notice ahead of time, three Sunday School classes came up with $250 in about half an hour (on a "family activity" day). That time around the bracelets brought in over $660.
This project was SO FUN, felt SO GOOD to do, and overall, with G-d's help the money will feed 150 babies. Now my brother and my friends and fellow students will G-d willing do the same project. (I decided that that has to be "round 2.") I made a website to guide them and get them set up:
www.brandeis.edu/~brophy/YADELIEZER.
(Please excuse the appearance of the website. The author is in the middle of final exams and does not have time to correct it right now).
They can always give directly to the incredible charity
Kids everywhere are mesmerized by this trend of gummy wristbands, which I think is the best thing to happen to the "fashion world"— popularized charity giving.
Please check out the website(s) and you will find all the info you need. Especially if you have access to large groups of kids- in your neighborhood, school, teaching position, camp, counselor position, religious community, etc, this is a great project for you.
There is no shortage of resources; the world just needs more carriers.
Believe in your cause. Good luck! May G-d help us all to help each other.

"Make It Happen"

A question to ask yourself each day is, "What can I make happen today?"
If you know that someone would appreciate hearing from their cousin, make it happen. "‘X’ would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Your call would mean a real lot to him."
If you know that someone is looking for an invitation to another person’s home, make it happen. Tell the person how much his invitation would be appreciated.
If you know that someone is looking for a job, do what you can to make it happen.
If someone you know is looking to buy a house, be on the lookout for one that might meet his needs.
At times someone won’t think of asking you to help him make something happen. He might not know that you could make it happen for him. He might not want to bother you. And at times he might not be aware of possibilities that would enhance his life. Even if you aren’t asked, think of ways to make things happen for people.
The author's students told him these stories:
"What changed my life was that a friend told me about a course that he felt would enable me to develop my dormant talents. He contacted the office of the school and found out details. He even offered to lend me the money to take the course and I could pay it back little by little with my earnings. This was exactly what I needed."
"I wanted to become a public speaker. I loved speaking but hated the logistics of making the necessary arrangements. Someone who felt people would gain from hearing me told me, 'Don’t worry about a thing. I’ll take care of all the arrangements. All you need to do is show up and share your ideas.' That was wonderful of him. To his credit goes all who have benefited from the lectures."
"It took me quite a while to find the person I married. I was apprehensive about getting married. I probably would have been single for many more years if it were not for a friend who sought out a compatible mate for me and persistently did everything possible to make sure things would work out, which they did fabulously well."
