There was a news item here in Israel that exemplifies what a difference a caring kind person can make:

A family was coming home late one night from a celebration in a different city. Rather than call a car service, they flagged down a cab (actually a van which provides such services) in the street. When they got home to Jerusalem, everybody groggily got out and the cab drove away. And only then did they realize, to their horror, that their five year old was still inside!

It was late at night. Not knowing which company this driver worked for, nor did any other helpful identifying details, they immediately called the police, who put roadblocks on all roads going out of the city. Then they started calling all the different taxi companies, and asked them to ask all of their drivers. No results.

Someone (apparently Hatzala, the emergency ambulance service) posted this news item on the internet, and a concerned woman read it. It occurred to her that many Jerusalem taxis are driven by drivers from her suburb of Beit Shemesh.

So there, in the middle of the night, she, a complete stranger, started calling all the cab companies in Beit Shemesh. The manager of one company was also shaken up by the story and feared that one of his drivers might have been too tired to check the cab before going to sleep, so he proceeded to call up each and every one of them and insist that they check their car.

Sure enough, to the amazement of one groggy driver, he actually found the little sleeping beauty dreaming away in his cab. They immediately notified the police, and the local Hatzala man came over with a photo to identify her and joyously return her to her family.

Can you imagine if she would have woken up in the dark, shut in a strange car in a strange locale? What if she would not have been discovered until after her oxygen ran out? What if no one would have cared to make the extra effort?

A question to ask yourself each day is, "What can I make happen today?"

If you know that someone would appreciate hearing from their cousin, make it happen. "‘X’ would greatly appreciate hearing from you. Your call would mean a real lot to him."

If you know that someone is looking for an invitation to another person’s home, make it happen. Tell the person how much his invitation would be appreciated.

If you know that someone is looking for a job, do what you can to make it happen.

If someone you know is looking to buy a house, be on the lookout for one that might meet his needs.

At times someone won’t think of asking you to help him make something happen. He might not know that you could make it happen for him. He might not want to bother you. And at times he might not be aware of possibilities that would enhance his life. Even if you aren’t asked, think of ways to make things happen for people.

The author's students told him these stories:

"What changed my life was that a friend told me about a course that he felt would enable me to develop my dormant talents. He contacted the office of the school and found out details. He even offered to lend me the money to take the course and I could pay it back little by little with my earnings. This was exactly what I needed."

"I wanted to become a public speaker. I loved speaking but hated the logistics of making the necessary arrangements. Someone who felt people would gain from hearing me told me, 'Don’t worry about a thing. I’ll take care of all the arrangements. All you need to do is show up and share your ideas.' That was wonderful of him. To his credit goes all who have benefited from the lectures."

"It took me quite a while to find the person I married. I was apprehensive about getting married. I probably would have been single for many more years if it were not for a friend who sought out a compatible mate for me and persistently did everything possible to make sure things would work out, which they did fabulously well."
