Many years ago, when I was a freshman in a local Penn State branch campus, my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer and scheduled for a mastectomy.
I attended an 8 AM class on the day of her surgery. One of my classmates was a friend of mine, my best friend's husband. He was a sophomore and already set in his groups of friends. Most mornings we just said hi to each other as he crossed the room to join his friends.
On that morning, he sat next to me and stayed there during the whole class. He never once mentioned my mom; he just sat with me. Almost 30 years later, that still touches me as such a sweet act of kindness - the just BEING there beside me.
And by the way - Mom was fine, and is still with us today!

"A Few Seconds That Last Forever"

A kind word can last forever. An encouraging word can be the foundation upon which many constructive years will be established. Enhancing the self-image of a child with a brief but powerful comment can create a magnificent human being. Words that inspire function like the fuel that enables the rocket to fly high and far.
Will every kind word be remembered? Not always consciously. But it’s there in one’s subconscious. The recipient of that kind word is likely to pass it on to others. So your words of kindness can be like an eternal chain or a perpetual motion machine.
It might take you a few seconds to encourage someone who is about to give up. That person has the potential to have a major impact on many lives. Those accomplishments might not have happened if not for your words of encouragement.
When your words are intended to uplift, to encourage, to influence, to motivate, to inspire, be aware that what you say can endure for many years. The ensuing benefits can help multitudes of individuals and families for many generations. Your words are powerful. Use them wisely.
The founder of a major approach to spiritual growth and self-development attributed all he accomplished in life to one sentence he heard from a luminary of his generation. Everyone reading this and similar works are among the many others who are the heirs to the spiritual benefits of that original one sentence.
One of my students told me, "I have a friend who was not using his full potential in school. His teacher convinced his parents to send him to a school that was more conducive for using his potential. That ten minute conversation led to his succeeding beyond his parents wildest dreams."
As I was writing this book, a neighbor told me, "Recently someone came over to me and reminded me that I gave him encouragement when he was going through a major crisis. He had serious thoughts of ending his life. My friendly care and concern gave him the strength not to do anything drastic. That was over twenty years ago. He is forever grateful for the life that I enabled him to live."

Kindness is like music, art, sports or any other discipline -- it can only be mastered with practice, training, and lots and lots of encouragement. That is what PartnersInKindness.org is trying to promote.
