As you`ll see from the abstract below, once we got into ordering the material and planning the paper, the actual abstract came out somewhat different from what I had originally suggested it might be. As I understand the rules, we have until the 30th of August to go with this statement or revise it.
An American aesthetic, or we`ve got rhythm
In the beginning there was America. Then came South America, North America, Central America, Mesoamerica and, finally, Latin America - borders natural and borders created, identities in convergence and in conflict, for some the promised land, for others paradise lost. The search for definition and a proper aesthetic intensified in 1959 during the Archaeology Week, held at the University of San Marcos, Lima. Vocabulary such as style, preferred over culture, was affirmed by participants such as Rosselló, Muelle and Rowe. Chanka became a sub-style of Naska, a departure from the idea, first stated by Tello. This presentation will take a new look at Tello´s search for the center and the concept of Chanka style, expressed in textile and ceramic media, yesterday and today. It will employ archaeographic interpretation of formats and figures to demonstrate the structural ground of rhythimic patterns.
