Does anyone know of a good (& available) reference for panama hats? Or
have experience analyzing archaeological specimens? I am especially
looking for comparative archaeological info, and anything that would
assist plant species determination. I am trying to confirm that the
two small pieces of fine, twill-plaited basketry recently found in a
wet site in British Columbia are from a "panama" hat; context suggests
mid 1800s age. Technologically and historically/chronologically they
fit. I hope the botanist I am working with can identify the material
as toquilla palm (Carludovica palmata), but the fibers are extremely
thin, narrow, and mushy.
Thanks for any tips!
