Hello,
I wanted to call everyone's attention to a recent book
that has been published which may be of interest to
many interested in textiles and craft production.
Patricia Marks Greenfield has recently published a
volume on her work with two generations of Zinacantec
Maya weavers in the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is an
exceptionally well done volume that looks at the
social learning context of Mayan backstrap loom
weaving, cultural transmission and child development.
I've ready it and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's an easy
read and full of valuable information for those of us
interested in historic and prehistoric textiles.
Particularly valuable, in my opinion, is her knowledge
of cognitive psychology, which opens up a whole new
body of literature that anthropologists don't
typically get into. This will be one volume that I
will be mining for ideas and information for years to
come. I very highly recommend it. And to entice you
just a bit more, the pictures are magnificent.
I've included below the link to the publisher's
description. It's $29.95 and well worth every penny.
