hello everyone
I am new to this group. I have one phal I purchased a year ago from a
fellow member of the Orchid Society here in town. It's still a rather
young plant so it has not spiked yet.
I just wanted to say hi to everyone.

Actually, it wouldn't be a branch but a separate society. And MOS = Maryland
Orchid Society :)

MOS is the Manhattan Orchid Society, an branch of the AOS.
I'm trying to find people who've been working with Phals. for a
while. My orchid spent too much time with too little light, so the
flowers and buds all fell. Since then, I've trimmed it down and
stuck it in a North facing window. It's also been on a tray of
stones/water for a while, but the edges of the leaves have a slight
dried look to them. It's a very thin line of brown around the very
edge in a few spots.
I'm trying to determine if it's normal. It's not sunburn, althoug
it's in more light, it's not direct of excessive.
Anyone have suggestions?
Hi, I'm new to the group. Always looking to share and dig for tips
on growing phalaenopsis.
Am curious as to how many memembers are a part of AOS or MOS. As my
baby grows, I'm hoping to turn it into an award winner (with
delusions of greatness, I hope to make it an FCC/AOS winner)
Just wanted to say hello.
Chris
Hi, Lana -
I am no expert, but since no one has answered you yet, I will give it a
shot.
I think that the plants you refer to are phal.violacea hybrids. Does
your plant have a scent? Violacea has a very nice fragrance.
I have killed a couple of these, and I find that they really need warm
temperatures. As far as sun, at the orchid nursery that I visit, he
seems to place his violacea plants in an area where they get a little
less light than his other phals.
Good luck! I love them!

Hi everybody, I'm a new member of the group. Was wondering if anyone grows star type Phals and can give me some culture tips. Usually I buy the moth type, but have a new star Phal and the flower is star shaped rather than a moth shape. Do they need more or less light than the moth Phals?
Lana in Toronto.

Thanks Janet, I`ll go and have a look soon. The other way to find
out, of course, is to sit and trawl through all the phal photos I can
find on the net. Second thought.....I would probably root to the
floor under my desk. *lol*

You could try to take the plants out of their pots, cut out the
dead/decaying/rotting roots... mix 1 teaspoon of PHYSAN 20
concentrate in 1 gallon of water and dip the whole remaining root
system in the liquid for 10 to 15 minutes.. Repot the plant in fresh
media and drench the media with fresh physan 20@1 teaspoon/gallon of
water.
Also you should use media which is porous...as phals usually do not
like to have their roots in water for prolonged periods of time.
Hope this helps.

I was trying to figure out which orchid group to ask questions of,
there are so many....
I have root rot on my phales...Is this absolute death-meaning do I
need to use a fungicide? I took too long to change the mix.
Also, does anyone know where I can ask q's about my sick oncidiums?

The AOS is the American Orchid Society. You can get there from www.aos.org. All kinds of interesting info, etc. Physically located in Delray Beach, Florida.

Its normal over here when an orchid is bought from a
general garden centre. My local ones sells Phals for £12 ($18) in
flower and only £2.50 ($3.75) when the flowers have faded. The labels
just say "Phalaenopsis Orchid". And yes, I hate it!! :-D

For the first time this year, 3 of my phals did not form end buds.
There is just a deformed 'stump'. The spike seems fine and the
emerging flowers are normal/vibrant.
Any idea on what causes this so that I can prevent it in the future?
I grow under lights in winter; outdoors in summer and am located in
Southeastern Pennsylvana.
Hi Mike
I can't name it but it sure is pretty.
I just signed on to this list. I have two Phals. One I got last
year, pink, and one I bought recently, white.
