HI All,
This one is right down my alley.
I've worked on numerous circa 1970's instruments made
at the factory in Seneca, PA, formerly known as the
Classic Player Piano Co. They made Baldwins and
Wurlitzers at that factory.
The problem is most likely the pouches which activate
the note valves. Early in their run, Classic used
a preformed synthetic pouch known as PerFlex.
Unfortunately, it was discovered that PerFlex suffered
from hydrolysis; the decomposition of a checmical
compound by reaction to water.
There is only one way to correct the problem and that
is to replace all of the pouches in the stack (which
houses the valves, pouches and pneumatics) with the
improved TufTane pouches.
Because of the design of the Wurlitzer stack, a special
tool is required to insert the new pouches, which
are physically compressed into the pouch well,
automatically creating the 'dish'. I made such a tool
back in the very early 90's when the problem started
to raise it's ugly head. Since then, I have replaced the
pouches in about a dozen similar stacks. (Universal
players also have the PerFlex pouches)
To the best of my knowledge, the replacement pouches
are not commercially available from anyone but Story
& Clark.
I used to have a listing for a technician in Georgia
but he was either too busy or did not wish to spend
the $10.00/year that I charge for maintaining a
Technicians Listing at my web domain. To find another
technician who is close to you, visit the listing at:
http://www.player-care.com/playtech.html
If all else fails, you can send me the stack and I
will replace the pouches for $600.00 plus shipping
and handling.
Musically,
