CESD, All,

If you missed this, the new Mac OS (10.6) will support Java SE 6, and only that
version. I do not know if it affects Pimlical on the Mac, but thought it good to
mention.

Thank you!

Peter

I see. Thanks, as usual.

In the <Options> <Format...> page, the find feature is great, but a
repeat find button would prevent the Find OK Find OK find OK sequence.

Use CTRL, Shift, or Alt with click on button and it does exactly what you
want :)

Cheers!

I am seeing nothing as I said other than a quick flash which is too fast to
read. It does NOT go to the match even though the match was found. It DOES
go to it if it is not crossed off. This seems wrong.

Well, yes, it is wrong but we are trying to figure out why, since it
works for me.. same thing, crossed off daily journal and find goes right
to it. Do you have all categories displayed? Are there any hidden items?
Probably not but just trying to track down possibilities.

Further thoughts: Can you set up a dummy sort of test to see if it happens on
ALL of your searches [you probably don't want to use "Daily Journal" but setting
up a past crossed off appointment with a few notes in it, and see if Search
finds an item in one of the notes.

Sometimes odd things are one-off, such as yesterday I stretched an appointment
to go for one more hour and set it as an exception in a series and poof! it
disappeared! It was still on the exception LIST but where it is I have no
idea...

The point being if this is a problem with SEARCH or was it a problem just with
that particular daily journal...

This is my problem. I did not understand how it was supposed to work. I
thought find would not just go to the entry on the day but would bring it up
in detail ready to edit. My mistake but that would be nice.

I think it is a reasonable request that a search for a single item would
open Daily Journal to edit. However, what if the result of the find was
TWO Daily Journals? "If only one is found, open; if two are found make a
list?" Just thoughts here.

Thoughts: Well, it is about the size of a ladies wallet purse when closed, a
little bigger with the leather case, but leather case is good and actually holds
the fan opening off the table [if you put it down to use or to do something
else.]

The screen actual size is 4 1/4" x 2 1/4"+.

The keyboard is actually quite nice, the keys are small but have a good feel. It
has wireless [which I use] and bluetooth [which I don't... at least yet].

Now the big issue is how does Pimlical look run on this device?

It took me a few tries to get things moved over but in the end it turned out to
be easy. I moved datebk.db, address.db, memopad.db, todo.db to a flash drive and
renamed them to datebk.mdb, address.mdb, memopad.mdb and todolist.mdb. I also
moved the contents of the Pimlical folder [the one under Palm OS Desktop] to the
flash.

I installed Pimlical on the new device as standalone pimlical, but I did NOT run
it. I looked in its "pimlical" folder and moved into it only my usericons.dat
file and the tasks display template I'd changed.
Then in each address, datebk, todo, memo folder I moved over my file from old
computer.

THEN I ran it and voila! Everything seemed to work. For some reason I kept
losing my tasks list but I was able to find it eventually; and I do have some
files I'm sending to CESD to see if he can figure out anything.

It took a few times to figure out; don't RUN pimlical first and things like
that, and then erased something accidentally so started over, but all in all the
transition was not too bad.

What does Pimlical look like? Well, at the proper resolution Pimlical looks
great just like it does on my laptop. But I can't read it! So I changed the
fonts to 20 point in almost every place I could, which helped some. Then I went
to Accessiblity [it runs Windows XP] and chose most of the accessibility
options. This  changes the screen resolution so some of Pimlical doesn't show;
the main difficulty being with the Priority/Templates/Filter/Other window which
cuts off the bottom of New/Edit etc. It has a teeny tiny scroll bar. This is
workable since I can rotate the screen and see this and also I have now assigned
function keys to the filters. Magnifier programs don't work so well cause there
is no mouse.

BUT the result of this "testing" is that I think as CESD gets pimlical on
smaller devices there may have to be some adjustments made. Of course he
probably wanted to do them before this but has been spending all this time
getting things compatible with Datebk6! There are some things that were
optimized for Datebk6 that may have to be considered here such as the big sized
buttons to acknowledge alarms...

It has a touch screen and a stylus or finger can be used. Are new devices or
phones going to have stylus? Or Not?

Bert: I don't have to sideways scroll browser windows, just vertical scroll.

That's all for now!

Barbara,

Thank you for the precise description of how you moved Pimlical. That will be a
guide to me when I change my installation of Pimlical to "stand alone".

I am a little surprised at the scroll bar issue. I will have to check that on my
Vaio in handheld mode, but I don't off hand remember what the situation is with
the scroll bars on the small screen. But I think they are both there. My one
problem is with the appointment/task editing window. It does not fit completely
on my small screen (in handheld mode) in either horizontal or vertical display.
I have to flip it to horizontal to edit in it, but then the "okay" button is cut
off, so I have to flip the display to hit "okay" to complete the edits.
Annoying, but I can live with it. As you noted, however, CESD may have to fix
that when he moves Pimlical to handheld platforms.

All the best,

It's already in the next release and working. It wasn't feasible to read or
write the images that Palm puts in there on the handheld, but there is
another field in the database for a link to an image, and that does seem to
work nicely in Pimlical - I've added a feature to the Contacts Screen
template that allows it to draw the image so it appears in the right-hand
pane....

I'll be posting that shortly, although it's a busy weekend here with a tour
on Saturday and Oliver's pre-shipment immobilization on Sunday (Oliver is
going this fall to Columbus Zoo where he'll have his own family group -
yeah!).

Of course - there are "large" dialogs and "small" dialogs in Pimlical. All
the "large" dialogs will look quite different on a handheld as they will all
be redesigned. I already have those designs done. The current configuration
is intended for displays of at least 800x600 - which is probably the minimum
size to support for the "large" configuration. I will endeavor to try and
keep all dialogs workable at that resolution. But for things smaller than
that it would definitely require the alternate screen designs...

Cheers!

The trouble I'm having [although Bert is quoted] is that my tiny
computer has 4 resolutions, all the way from 800 x 600 to something
bigger. Its just squished down to a really small screen! That of course
is not the fault of Pimlical, but it makes it interesting to see which
small device you start with!

Larry,

I can't speak to what causes the preference file to be rewritten, but I've seen
symptoms of unexpectedly not being able to write one piece of database or
another several times. Each time I've been able to track it down, the problem
has been some other application, such as automatic backup programs locking the
file in order to back it up and the JVM getting thoroughly confused when it
discovers the file is temporarily locked. I don't know a solution other than
waiting a bit and then doing whatever caused the write to occur again.

The original plan was to support 240x320, however, most new devices these
days are sporting 480x640 (i.e. VGA) or at least half-VGA (320x480) - so I'm
still debating what the minimum screen target size will be. For an app the
size of PImlical, it's not my intent to support older devices as they will
be too slow and not have enough memory anyway, so my plan is only to support
contemporary handhelds...

Although marked "Off Topic", is it really necessary to have this constant form
of surreptitious advertising and subliminal product placement going on here for
such a pathetic piece of electronic-scrap like the "Pre" on this forum?

This is about Pimlical. And Pimlical is the successor to DateBk_x, one of the
finest and strongest applications for legacy Palm devices, when they still
deserved that name "PDA" or "SmartPhone" due to a considerable amount of
built-in processing power and onboard storage capacity as compared to their
contemporary competitors.

Even the mention of that "empty shell" and "overly hyped generator of
net-traffic and revenues for pay-service vendors", as I used to characterize the
"Pre" before, here again and again I consider annoying and an offense towards
such a fine power-app like Pimlical.

I find these tidbits on Palm and it's products quite interesting, as
that is still the common root where most of us originate from, and
something many of us are still using, if not always in the intended way,
with or without Pimlical...

I still love my Palm T3, but with a Windows smartphone *and* an iPod
Touch, I no longer use it! Waiting for Pimlical for WinMob or iPod.
(Palm has let us down just one to many times!)

That should work well.
I don't think any of us expect Pimlical to be backwards comptabible on all
devices; for one thing they'll have to be capable of running JAVA applications.

But there sure are a lot of people waiting to see what direction YOU go before
they buy a new device.

I needed something smaller anyway and was eager to get starting using Pimlical
without syncing so I got impatient and bought a device that I can run Pimlical
on RIGHT NOW! ;)

It wouldn't be small enough for most people, since it isn't really pocket sized,
but I plan to carry it in my purse. I read a review where someone said it would
fit in their pocket but they must have had a really BIG pocket.

I have been using Datebk6 (6.1a, s3) and synching only with Pimlical for several
months.

In the last few weeks I have started getting meeting invites attached to all
sorts of appointments on my Palm. Nearly all my templates have them attached.

I don't understand how this is happening as I don't synch to Outlook and they
don't seem to be showing in Pimlical??

Any thoughts on how to:

a stop it happening in future

b how to get rid of them from the Palm (there seems to be no delete ability)

Thanks

Andy

Is there a plan on making a dateBook for the pre WebOS? I am not a big fan of
using the "old apps" application (not sure what its real name is). I love my
DateBook6 I used on my Treo 755, and the Palm calander that comes with the Pre
is fine, but clearly not as useful as the DateBook programs. Please tell me yes,
its in the making.......

This is really funny, although I know it isn't funny to YOU and it is very
strange that it would happen.

The funny part is that Bert Latamore has been WANTING to have meeting
invitations to be a part of pimlical... it should have happened to him!

Sorry though I don't know how to fix your problem. I would guess that it is
something else that is actually not a meeting invite turning in to one. You may
have to send your files to CESD support after he waves good by to Oliver. [the

I wouldn't be too optimistic about that, given the Pre's inferior hardware
specifications / pseudo-OS,

If you loved your Treo and DateBk6, why then did you undergo such a massive
downgrade with the Pre? Just wondering..

Pimlical requires a Java Virtual Machine plus customization. CESD has not
announced his intentions for Pre support, but it is likely to be low on the
list as there are smart phones with orders of magnitude more owners than the
Pre.

===============================================================

Meeting invitations are not something that DateBk or Pimlical can
manufacture out of thin air - they are FAR too complicated to construct. And
yes, in theory only Outlook should be able to generate such items.

You can remove them with DbFixIt, but only by removing ALL BLOBs in the
calendar database. The only impact this would have is if you are synching
timezone information to outlook/exchange server, etc. but since that's not
likely to be an issue based on what you are saying, you should have no
problem just doing that in DbFixIt.

As to where these are comding from though, it's weird - you say you don't
sync with outlook, but other conduits WILL insert meetings - so what conduit
ARE you using?

Cheers!
