Joe's Scoring of Pomegranates   Message List

I've had the opportunity to sample the last "open house" tasting of pomegranate at Wolfskill. My one biased mind is to evaluate the cultivars for their wine making potential and their predicted taste in wine relative to other cultivars.  My daughter helped me evaluate their fresh eating quality and we sort of average our scoring. The color rating is a scale from 1 (transparent to pearl white) to 10 (dark maroon red).  A fruit size of small means 3" or lesser, medium would be between 3" and 4", and Large would be 4" and greater. The sizes are based on the pomegranates that are displayed next to the fruit bowls. I did not bring a ruler, so the sizes are approximate.  I managed to iterate twice. The first is just for straightforward data, the next was for a second more detailed evaluation of wine potential after the crowd has dispersed, but the wind was blowing by then. Ideally I would iterate at least 5 times in the sampling, but don't have that much time considering that my other mind is on the soccer game of my daughter about 5 miles away from the pomegranate tasting.

All the cultivars have astringency and a little bit of bittersweet aftertaste in them and we could not detect significant differences so we didn't bother to include them. The astringency aspect is needed for most wine, and all the cultivars pass up okay on this one. None of the cultivars really tasted as sweet as any of the popular grape wines, so this means that we really need to add sugar to pomegranates when making wine.  As expected, most of the very good eating ones often lack the spriteness needed for wine making. When making wine, the seed size don't matter, but when fresh eating, they matter a lot. We did not evaluate the hardness of the seeds, we just checked them for size and swallowed them without chewing, LOL. Anyway, I hope my biased ranking would be of help.
