Hello-freezing in Montreal,
Please get that sunshine happening as I am coming to Montreal at the end of
June to take in the Jazz Festival. We want warm days & evenings!!!! I hope
to get some shooting in as my son is performing one day at the festival. I
want shots to add to my collection of his musical career. Are you into the
jazz scene at all?
I shoot Canon so can't help you out re lens but will let a couple of Nikon
friends know.

Hi Everybody,
I live out east of Calgary on an acreage. I have been getting some
very nice 'dusty sunset' and storm pictures from my front deck.
I do have a small question however.
When shooting directly into the sun as it is setting I have been
getting some flare from my 80-200 f2.8 AF Nikkor & HN-28 hood. (on
FM2n)
Any idea's on how to minimize this? I usually have no filter on the
lens and shoot from a tripod. I've tried shading the lens with my
hand or a hat but this ends up in the viewfinder to stop the flare.
Maybe this is a issue with the zoom as my 105 f2.5 AI-S & 28 f2.8 AF-
D tend to not flare as easily.

Also does anyone have any idea's for nice (new) locations around
Calgary for landscapes. (I do know quite a few as I have lived here
for 26 years)

Because you say that you usually shoot with no UV filter or skylight filter
on your lens as well as using a lens hood, I'm at at bit of a loss to
explain this. Is the sun in your photo? There is no doubt that if there was
filter was on the lens it would contribute to the flare, because every time
you add a piece of glass onto the front of a lens, you have another
air/glass surface that can contribute to flare. I think that flare is more
prevalent in zooms than primes. Have you looked a the front element of your
lens? Could there be a small nick or scratch that may be doing this to you?

I lived in Calgary for 2 years back in '77-'79 while attending school
there. I'm sure that most of the places I knew outside the city are now
part of the city. ;-))

Hi Terry,
Yes, the sun is in the picture for effect, usually at or near the
horizon with the lens at 200mm. I normally have a Heliopan KR-1 on
the lens when down in the dust and dirt, but take it off when
shooting into the sun or in nice reasonably clean area's. As far as
the lens goes I bought it new in 1992 and it still is in mint
condition. No marks on the glass.
I have found it difficult to shot directly into the sun and not see
some flare. It is minor but still there.
By moving things around sometimes it can be eliminated.

And yes, Calgary keeps growing and getting closer to me. (still @20
miles away...)

How's Regina today? It was 31 deg yesterday, and forecast hot all
week here.

Thanks,
Gary

If the sun is right in the frame, a hood won't help, and neither will a hat.

The only solution will be to use a lens with less elements. The more
elements you have, the worse the flare is. And zooms have a lot of
elements. (This particular lens, which I also own, has about 15 elements.)

If you can borrow a prime lens (e.g. 135/2.8, 180/2.8) or own one, that
would be ideal. My 135/2.8 has only four elements, so the flare will be
much less obvious than it is with an 80-200 zoom.

Jim

Hi Jim,
I agree with this. If I use my 105 f2.5, 50 f1.4, or 28 f2.8 the
flare is greatly reduced or eliminated. I was going for
that 'telephoto compression' look at 200mm. I'll use the 105 for now
as it's lighter and sharper as far as I can tell. I do tend to use
these 3 primes most of the time and only use the 80-200 when more
length is required.
Thanks,
Gary

This post is a little more constructive.

I have developed an addiction for E-6 film I the last little while.
Taking a temporary break from dark room burn out in the last few
months. If the results are good I will post one or two here for
everyone to look at. they a pictures of a YELLOW "mustard seed" field
on the edge of Winnipeg. I drive by every day, and I have seen the
fields growth, just waiting for the the green to go yellow. Last
sunday I got up a 6 am and headed out with the EOS and tripod and did
what I can with my 24mm, 50mm, & fisheye. Hope to post in the next few
days. The film is ready at the lab tomorrow morning and will have them
do some scans later this week along with a few I took a few weeks ago
just 5 minutes from my house.

So, that is what I'm really doing. O-ya the remote does have a lock.
(thank god for the eos list)

Jim,

Have you used your old 200mm f4.0 lens straight into the sun?  If so, and it works okay, maybe that's the kind of lens that Gary should use.

For what it's worth, I've got a Tamron 500mm f8 reflex that changes most "flare" into (bad bokeh) the out-of focus highlights.  Flare, therefore is not a problem, and if there are no specular parts to your subject (e.g. silhouette), you won't have too much of a problem, like this:

Some like the effect, others don't.

Basking in the sun,
Parry

P.S.  Jim, you missed a great early morning at Condie -- you whimped out!

Zooms because of all the elements etc. are more prone to flaring. Same as
uncoated lens. You should be able to see the flaring ( circular images or
the like) in your viewfinder and just moving the lens slightly will usually
get rid of them. Try changing the angle slightly.

Sometimes the flare is a very good picture element so don't always rule it
out.

As far as the flare is concerned, you may want to try shooting at different f
stops and see if you find an f stop where the flare is not as pronounced.

It's not multicoated (only single coated), but it will probably work better
than an 80-200 since it only has four elements.

P.S. - I wondered if you went to Condie. But 5 am comes pretty early when
one also has to work. ;)

Sounds good, Terry,

Also, if anyone here on the list hasn't seen the Regina Photo Club webpage, you'll have to come take a look -- especially at the Member Galleries:

Plenty of ideas there for prairie photography.  I must get back to my relaxing....!!!   ;-)

Cheers,
Parry

Nice to see this group getting some traffic again.

I haven't shot anything really "prairie" for a while. A trip to
Vancouver Island produced some photos, but no "prairie" themes!

The closest I can come is photos from this years Flatland Music
Festival in Regina just last weekend.

HI,

I was just wondering where everyone has their e-6 scanned if you do not
do it yourself? I do not have a scanner that is capable of any thing
more than scanning old "fax" jokes I have accumulated over the years.
For the e-6 I shot on the "mustard field" I mentioned, I am having the
scans done at THE LAB WORKS here in Winnipeg. They are charging me
$6.15 per image for position only scans, (Canadian funds) These will be
my first ever scanned e-6'ers and I am hopping for better results than
my $99 scanner has done with prints. (I'm sure they will be)

Is this price on par with most labs? Terry where do you have your e-6
processed in the queen city? Don's photo?

Where do you go for scanning?

-Dan
