I'm writing from my work computer which doesn't have QTR installed, hopefully
someone
else will kick in on this and give more info.

Anyway, I would guess that you're using a Windows machine, so I'm going to be
limited
help from this point on because my knowledge does not extend to Windows in any
meaningful way.

I think I had to "create" a Quad2200 printer device in my printer setup utility,
or perhaps
QTR did that by itself, I don't recall.

Within the first dialog "print with preview/page setup", there is a pull down
menu that
allows me to select either the Epson 2200 printer or the Quad2200 printer
device. When
the Quad2200
is selected, new options become available in the "print" dialogs.

Make sure the "more options" button is checked in the "print with preview"
dialog, and
then you should be able to see the "color management" dialog. This is where you
should
find the color space options. This where you would set the 'print space' to
"same as
source".

Harv,

I’ve been using QImage to print colour and QTR for black and white.

I just used PS CS to try out your suggestions, but it doesn’t appear to work the same way as yours.

  1. The print preview dialog doesn’t have a color space option
  2. When I click on Proceed, I just get the Epson driver dialog, there’s no menu for QTR

Sounds like your QTR is more integrated with Photoshop than mine for some reason, I always use QTR as a standalone program.

Thanks anyway,

Bernie

Bernie,

We should back up a little.  I'm running QTR through Photoshop CS on OSX.  In Pshop I
select "print with preview", this brings up the first dialog where I select "same as source"
for the color space and choose my paper size and orientation.  Then click on "print" which
brings up a second set of dialog boxes.  Among the pull down menus I select the "matte
paper" paper type and print resolution, then go to another pull down and select "no color
adjustment, then go to the QTR menu and select QTR's paper profile and the tone settings,
then finally print.

Does this correlate to your set up at all?

ps, I think I was wrong about the enhanced matte setting, matte seems to the be proper
option.

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your efforts here, and I think most people will not
mistake a well-moderated, focused group for grumpiness ;>)

All your points are very well taken, and I just wanted to comment on
the wrapping -- it may well be a Safari thing, because the only time
I see a difference between my IE or Firefox formatting and the
preview I do prior to posting is when Yahoo sticks one of their
lovely ads in the right corner of the post. That just knocks all the
line wrapping on its ear!

Anyway, glad there is a group now just for QTR, and I trust Roy and
Steve will spend time here and continue their incredibly generous
support -- as well as all the other very knowledgeable QTR people
from the DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint forum...

Cheers,
Richard

Hi All,

Glad to be part of this new and much needed group. I suppose the
formation of this group, by itself, validates the importance of the
QTR.

Count me in. I am only a lowly amateur with modest output, but
hopefully I will be able to contribute in a useful way. I used to
have a b/w & color darkroom (many years ago) and enjoyed it
immensely, but the distractions of life became all-consuming. The
digital process has seduced me once again, and I feel strongly that
I'll stay with daylight printing.

Love my QTR!

Best wishes,

Diane,

I have 2 2200s one with UC and one with UT7s I have QTR on both
computers. The UT7 prints I do are on matte paper. The UC machine is
set up for glossy and I do color and B&W on it. I like the tones of
the UT7 inks a little bit better than UC on matte paper.

Thanks for the info, but I don’t see any way to set the color space in QTR. Also there’s no Enhanced matt paper, only matte.

Hi Randy,

Thanks for the reply, I tried your suggestion but it made the print much warmer.

I guess I wasn’t specific enough in my original post, the problem with neutrality is that the prints are already too warm. I’m having to compensate by making them cooler in Photoshop (obviously not the right way to go!)

Thanks for the other suggestions, but I don’t have a suitable area for spraying and I’m not very keen on the look and feel of the matte papers.

Cheers,

Bernie

I think your problem with neutrality is your choice of 2 cool curves
rather than 1 warm and 1 cool.  This will result in a much more
neutral tonal range.

The bronzing is not QTR's fault.  It is ink used by the 2200, the
way the paper absorbs it and the way the 2200 puts ink onto the
paper.  As far as I know, the only way to deal with bronzing is to
apply a coating that will even out the reflectance values of the
paper or simply change to a more matte surface paper.

Best regards,
Randy

Hi,

I’m not very pleased with the neutrality (and bronzing) of my black and white prints using QTR RIP / Epson 2100 / Ilford Smooth Pearl paper.

Does anybody have any curves that might help or any other advice. The settings I use in QTR Rip are:-

Media Type: Premium Luster Photo Paper

Curves: UCpk-EPPremSemiGloss-cool 50 UCpk-EPPremSemiGloss-cool

Tried a few of the other built in curves, but the above seems to be the best.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Bernie

Has anyone tested the min allowed custom paper length using roll QTR?

I was trying to save money on tests and used a 4 inch length for the Epson
driver; the
result was 8 inches of a 16 inch wide image. When I upped the defined length to
6 inches
it seemed to work fine.

But with QTR 6 inches wouldn't work, then I had to hit the road. Does anyone
know what
the minimum roll paper length is for QTR? longer than 6 inches, or do I have
something
else wrong?

Thanks

Hi,

My name is Jim weekes and I have loved QTR ever since the GUI for it
came out. I need all the help I can get. I have been a photographer
for 35 years. I had three different studios in Vermont and managed a
color lab for seven of those years. I also had a darkroom up until I
got a D30 and saw what Photoshop could do with a HUGE 3 megapixel
file. The chemistry had been getting to me so I have effectively quit
the darkroom for all but film developing in MF.

I am writing to see if everyone knows about the UT7 curves for the
2200. I am on the Digital B&W forum and, at one point, Stephen
Billiard, the author of the GUI, put out a list of curves for GUI and
UT7 EEM warm and cool were on it. He immediately said it was a mistake
and that he had published a list that Roy was working on. Having a
2200 set up with UT7 ink made me write to Roy and ask. He, very
kindly, sent them to me with a disclaimer that they weren't finished.
Well, to my eye, with very little tweaking, they make lovely prints. I
would suggest that anyone with the 2200/UT7 combo give them a try.

Best, Jim Weekes

2200 set up with UT7 ink made me write to Roy and ask. He, very
kindly, sent them to me with a disclaimer that they weren't finished.
Well, to my eye, with very little tweaking, they make lovely prints. I
would suggest that anyone with the 2200/UT7 combo give them a try.

Best, Jim Weekes

Scott, my wife and I have been running our 4000 on roll paper with QTR with no
problems. We're using only USB cable. We're also using the 4000 for color
printing using the Epson driver and I'm printing through a network setup.
I don't know why you'd want to hook up both firewire and USB; what's the
advantage?

Ian

HI

Am interested in hearing roll printing experiences, on QTR of course :)

Both Mac and PC

Is it working for you?

Do you run it simultaneously with loaded and active Epson drivers?  If so, are the Epson
drivers set up on USB or Firewire?

I have been running Ep on FW for roll and setup QTR for roll on USB.  The good news is
that nothing bad happened so far.  (some one mentioned that it might ruin the printer to
have both cables setup at once).

I have not made the QTR work yet.

Thanks
Scott

A while back I tried QTR on the MAC under Jaguar and vaguely remember part of
the
program allowing the editing of profiles/curves. I recently downloaded the
current version
for Panther and cannot find a way to edit profiles. Apparently this can be done
on the PC
version. Can someone steer me in the right direction?

Just came from BWDigital and see that Roy has posted an update to QTR
2.2.1 for Windows to support 2880 dpi. Also included is the Moore
tutorial on curve creation.

Hi! I'm Ian McKee and I've just come over from digital BW.
I'm a retired chemist who still has and uses the darkroom but I also got a 4000
and have been having a ball printing from my scanned images with QTR.
I shoot mostly film 4x5 and 5x7 and am happy to expand my printing to inkjet.
I'm also particularly interested in making large digital negatives for contact
printing.
I'll be talking with you in the future (I've already had some conversation with
Diane who was really helpful.)

Hi All,

I have heard that Scott is grumpier than heck and will moderate moderately
strictly.

So, the idea here in the QTR group is to make QTR info available and relatively
easy to find
instead of being mixed in with a ton of other good stuff like in the B&W group.

Hence:

1. non QTR techno stuff will be gracefully rejected with a suggestion to post it
to the B&W
group which I greatly admire.

2. non techno stuff period will be dumped "moderately" gracefully; this includes
politics,
religion, philosophy, ads, and "everything else of a similar genre". This also
includes
bashing anything, anyone and any company. My general thought is that most of
the
problems that cause company bashing, for example, are user induced. There are
famous
exceptions of course.

3. related to number 2: there are EXCEPTIONS. The ones that come to mind are
ads of
GENERAL interest like "QTR can now be used with 'our inks', etc... And "welcome
to my
exhibition in Paris, tickets are attached"... What I was trying to say in the
previous
sentence is that showings of work are another major exception, unless they seem
very
commercial. So how do we tell? post it and see.

4. also related to number 2: I hope that posts will exhibit grace to a greater
or lesser
extent. Every once in a while I myself goof on this (lose it?) so DUMP ON ME,
BUT via
EMAIL, NOT a POST. Often I catch it myself and go back and delete the post
before more
than a few thousand people have suffered it. :)

5. Also considered not the best post is a "thank you for bailing me out of deep
???". Send
an email to the savior. They will appreciate it and our digests will not be
astronomical in
size.

6. Speaking of data size, please delete most of the thread that you reply to,
leaving only
enough for context. Repeated failure to do this in the long run will lead to
mutual
frustration.

7. Initially post anything that you think might fit or nearly fit; I will be
happy to consider it
and you might well help me define what I mean by all this. Incidentally members
and
posts are not currently reviewed before they appear in public and I do not
expect them to
be. If you have looked at the Epson 4000 group, it operates much like this; is
very useful;
and I do almost zero actual moderation. Kirk started it right one might say.

8. If you should someday find that you are no longer a member, don't take it as
a major
insult. It will mean that in my opinion you have stepped fairly far over the
line. Rejoin and
we'll try again. On the other hand if you are ever banned, hmmm. I have only
done that
once in a year on the other group.

9. And when you read this you may well notice that the formating stinks; word
wrapping
at the darnest places, etc. I have never figured out how to fix this and would
appreciate
advice. Is it just a Safari thing or????

Happy posting
Scott Graham

All you need to do is install the new software, then choose your printer.
However, I use the Macintosh G5 w/OSX8.3.8 and it is rther simplified to install
various printers.

Ok, I guess I'll get the ball rolling with a QTR specific question.
I've been usin QTR since it was released for Windows with my 2200.
I'll be taking delivery on an Epson 4000 in about a week and the
newest release of QTR is printer specific. Has anybody else changed
printers? Is it as simple as just re-running the installation
program, or do I need to un-install / re-install? I'll be gratefull
for any advice.

Hi Group,

I really hope this group takes off.

I have been reading the DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint group. While
this is a nice group it is not focused on the subject that is
important to me, and that is the Quadtone RIP.

Let me introduce myself.

I am an electronic engineer. I have worked in remote sensing
(airborne sensors and satellite ground stations) and color science
(designing proofers for the graphic arts industry).

I have a Leaf Valeo 22 megapixel digital back on my Hasselblad and
print on an Epson 4000.

I am a member of the Western Photographic Circle, which is a print
making club.

Good luck and I hope we can attract Roy Harrington over to this group.

I didn't-----this is Scott Graham's doing *smile*.    I had made a comment about the fact that it would be nice to have good info about QTR in the B/W file forum--in fact, suggested a post by Lou Dina which I had found in a search and had copied for my own use---but then Scott took the ball and ran with it and set all this up.  Hope we have some good activity on the group.

If you missed his initial post on digital b/w here it is.

"What would be even better would be a subgroup, like a sub folder or sub directory, but I
don't know that that is possible in Yahoo groups,

so a new group is starting strictly focused on QTR.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/QuadtoneRIP

The intent of course is QTR related posts, but we will also offer an instruction manual
eventually and whatever else seems reasonable.  Will also depend on what resources we
can attract, and donations (of files: hints, tips, etc).

Hopefully non QTR related items will continue to post here because this is a great group.
As a matter of fact non QTR items will be "moderated out" with a link to here.

I am in discussion with Roy Harrington about how much or how little involvement he will
have time for/be interested in.  I would hate to distract him from further technical
upgrades to the RIP.

The group will start slowly if only because I am in the midst of a cross country drive.
Come join "us"; it is lonely l over here  :)

Suggestions are welcome: like maybe "don't bug us with another darn group, or..."  or "it's
crass to post this on someone else'sgroup" (I am sort of bothered by that)

Scott Graham"

Thanks very much for your nice comments about my gallery.

Diane, thanks for setting this up!

Everybody should visit Diane's gallery: www.base.com/picnic

Lots of well-seen, non-trivial work

Diane, I like the quietest stuff best...your "product photos" of
ceramics are the quietest of the lot, but that kind of minimalist
photography can be very rewarding...as you've shown.

Your "monochromes" not only record objects and places from another
era, they look like they were taken in another era.

I guess I was too late to the party and didn't receive any 'notes' from new members (assuming you mean initial posts).  Looking forward to this group as I'm new to QTR.  I have demoed it for several weeks now and plan to send my 'shareware' amount to Roy today.

Welcome to the first members.

But somehow I have already goofed up and when I approved the memberships (was the
default requirement) I goofed and the notes that came with the new members
disappeared, before I read them of course since I figured approval was more important.

Would appreciate a reposting by you all.

Sorry
