I think my Epson R1800 is in need of replacement. I love the quality
of the prints; that is, when the heads aren't clogging up. Does anyone
have suggestions for a high quality B&W replacement? Also, is there
any consensus on replacement continuous feed systems. I've been using
MK3 carbon ink cartridges and recently they have consistently failed
to print. This happened when their cartridge design changed to smaller
ones with no peel-off seal. Any one else had similar problems? Thanks
for any help.

Are you sure it's not the dreaded "pizza wheels"? Surely head problems would
give horizontal lines.

You have to check it closely, even if it seems like there are no gaps in the
printed pattern. You can scan the nozzle check pattern or take a picture of it
and then enlarge it in Photoshop. You may also need to darken the image
somewhat so that you can see the lighter pattern easier.

printed pattern. You can scan the nozzle check pattern or take a picture of it

Examine nozzle step down patterns to make sure that each nozzle line starts at

Dear Skip,
I am still active with my camera, but the day job is taking its toll. In
this economic environment employers are "increasing the rate of
exploitation" as my old friend Karl would say. I am sure there is light at
the end of the tunnel - perhaps next week?

Just to echo what Howard said. I am also a member of that group. Many
there use QTR.
I use QTR and IJC/OPM on an Epson 2100 and 7800.

If you're looking to discuss QTR and perhaps exchange prints with other
QTR users in the UK you might want to consider joining the UK B & W

I'm wanting to link up with any QTR users in the UK, ideally West of England,
hopefully using 7600 or 4000 printers, but that's not essential.
Any of you out there?
Doh! Thanks to Roy Harrington for pointing out the need to print at 1440dpi or
better. I was making test prints at 720dpi. As soon as I switched to 1440Super,
the prints looked great.
In case anyone's interested, printing on Ilford Galerie Gold Fiber Silk works
great with the ISmoothPearl curves. IGGFS is a semi-matte baryta paper that
takes Photo Black ink. Its surface is a lot like that of Ilford Multigrade fiber
B&W darkroom paper. It's very nice with color, but especially suited to B&W
printing. And, it's pretty affordable.

not show much shadow detail.

Here is an example of our most popular K6 ink, its called Special Edition K6 and
its a triple split tone from neutral into selenium and finally sepia shadows:
http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672/it.A/id.3672/.f
But click on each of the ink families and if you do not see a six shade ink set
- just select shades 1 - 6 individually.
Special Edition K6 is one of our best selling inks and we still support six ink
printers like the 1400. K6 is K7 minus shade 7.
The QTR works differently than the old plugin software or the next generation
PiezographyBW ICC. We converted the Piezography profiler to compile curves for
QTR and provided the curves to Roy to include in the $50 download of QTR. It's
very easy to use when you do not have to make your own curves. With the included
K6 curves its very similar to the plugin - just select your paper and go... If
you need a profile for something we did not produce - we can make customs for
you.

Hi Mike,
There are now at least five flavors of six shades of Piezography K6 which will
take the best advantage of your 1280:
http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672/sc.15/category.239/.f
Selenium and Neutral were the most popular until Special Edition was released.
We also have Sepia and Warm Neutral. But my K6 curves which are in the QTR
software will allow you to SplitTone and tailor the inkset to what you desire.
If you would like to upload some of your images and try full size prints - we
offer inexpensive online printing here:
http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672/sc.15/category.29282/.f
But Pieography Glossy is not an option for the six ink printers - so stick to
matte if you want to try your images with some of the new ink sets and QTR K6
driver.
I also offer custom QTR curve profiling if you find out we do not support your
paper choices. The complete list is available on the info page which is here:
http://shopping.netsuite.com/s.nl/c.362672/sc.15/category.27707/.f

You might consider the 100% carbon options I've been using on a number of Epson
printers. Eboni-6 < http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf > and the
Carbon-6 (user mixed) < http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Ink-Mixing.pdf > are
generic 100% carbon monotone inksets that should work on virtually all Epson
printers. On all I've tested they print with either the Epson driver and an ICC
made with QTR Create ICC or, of course, the QTR rip. I use both approaches.
There is no more stable or affordable way to go if medium warm matte prints are
the goal.
The tones are varied via paper choice. Page 8 of
http://www.paulroark.com/BW-Info/Eboni-6.pdf has a graph that shows the range of
tones -- near neutral to medium warm.

I'm using Win 7 and QTR. It works great.

It's been a while since I printed B&W with Piezography ink. I go back far
enough that I used to use the special R9 driver software.
I want to start using my Epson 1280 again. I think I need the Piezography K6
inks, but a browse through inkjetmall.com seems to suggest that the K6 inks are
no longer sold?
If that is the case what is the best/easy option for using B&W inks on an Epson
1280 printer? Are the inks at Inkjet Supply the best alternative for printing
using the QuadToneRIP driver?
Thanks in advance,
Mike
There are, I believe, three 1440 resolutions: 1440, 1440x1440, and super 1440.
Can someone tell me what the differences are between these?
I read somewhere that 1440 super provides more "weaving" but I'm not sure what
that is or what it means.
Thanks, David.
Are there any dependencies, such as dlls or other unique programs, that might
start causing QTR to behave badly?
I even tried disabling all processors but 1 (I'm on a quad) to see if that would
prevent the error messages.
If I open any QIDF, from any folder, and hit 'show curve' I get variations on
the same error. Sometimes it's qdotgain, sometimes it's qcurve, line 81 or l84.
Fresh install? Yup. 4x.

Not about bronzing, but about sharpness: the same picture printed on Epson Ultra
Premium Luster appears sharper to me compared to Innova Fiba and Hahnemuhle
Baryta and Perl papers.
Did you notice any difference?

I used QTR with success several years ago. Now, I'm starting to use QTR 2.6.2,
and I've read and followed the "Tutorial" and "User Guide" docs exactly, to no
avail. I'm using PS CS3 under OS X 10.5.8 and printing on Epson Enhanced Matte
paper on an Epson 4000 with standard UltraChrome inks.
I converted my image to Gray Gamma 2.2 in PS, selected the QTR - Gray Matte
Paper profile, Perceptual, Black Point Compensation, blended curves
UC-EEnhMatte-warm & UC-EEnhMatte-cool 49/51, and printed at 720dpi,
bi-directional with Matte ink. The result is terrible, with only light and
middle grays and a bit of black, but no dark grays. What am I missing?
Also, what are the QTR_RGB_Matte_Paper and QTR_RGB_Photo_Paper profiles for? Do
I select them when printing a monochrome RGB file?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
