      Editor's Note
    Peace has broken out within the global semiconductor industry. In its wisdom, Intel Corp. has again opted to settle out of court antitrust litigation brought by rival Advanced Micro Devices. This was not only a wise move, but was Intel's only real option. A lengthy antitrust case would benefit no one, least of all Intel. The company figured this out a decade ago when it settled another antitrust case before the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. Cut your losses and move on, Intel's attorneys seem to have concluded. The deal also frees AMD from previous licensing restrictions imposed by Intel, and gives the struggling chip maker a badly needed $1.25 billion cash infusion under terms of the settlement. At long last, both companies can start paying more to its engineers rather than to there legal staffs.

      EDITOR'S NOTE
    Before I forget, we've just opened nominations for the 2010 EETimes ACE Awards (that's short for "Annual Creativity in Electronics"); click on the link in the news section below and you'll get the information you need.

    Last week, we briefly looked at "wireless power", via an evaluation product called Powerharvester Modules from PowerCast Corp. which looked very interesting, if only as an experimental setup. And now I see a different take on wireless power, using it for recharging of your cell phone and similar. The Wall Street Journal recently reviewed two products, the Powermat and myGrid, "Charger Mats Curtail Clutter, Not Energy Use". Handy? Maybe, it depends. Efficient? Not really. Worth it? Well, it depends on your circumstances, as is usually the case.

    But I do question the credibility of the highly speculative factoid towards the end of the otherwise decent article which flatly states, "an additional 280 gigawatts of new generating capacity will be needed in two decades just to power all of those new cellphone chargers, cable boxes and high-definition televisions, according to the International Energy Agency." Those sorts of allegedly factual--but actually unprovable--predictions drive me crazy.

    So, what's doing this week? We have a detailed item, complete with all needed equations and analysis, on how generating a negative output voltage from a positive input voltage using the buck (step down) regulator that is already available. We also look at ESD protection for discrete semiconductors, always an important issue.

    And yes, we even have a feature on software reliability, heretical as it may seem. But the reality is this: software is now an integral part of any system, including power supplies, subsystems and their management; it is used to set up parameters, capture and analyze data, close the operating loop (inner or outer or supervisory), and much more; also, some lessons about software quality can be applied to overall designs to help improve the design verification and integrity process. Plus, how many times has what looks to be a circuit/hardware glitch or bug turned out to be software, or vice versa? So you have to know ho to assess the quality of the software, even if you are doing a mostly analog supply design.

    We also have some new products of interest as well as industry news and updates, so check those out, as well. Some development in a semi-related field may give you an idea or an inspiration. Also, we've taken our weekly feature "Recently Introduced Analog (and related) Products" and further divided it, to call out power products and discrete semis as their own subcategories.

    EMBEDDED SALARIES/ BARCODE DECODING/ HP'S NEW SENSOR
    Despite some uncertainties, electronics market conditions are slowly improving, with 23 percent increases in MPU shipments, smaller chip sale declines this year and a possible 20 percent growth next year after a 10 percent decline this year. Analysts surveyed in "Seven early predictions for electronics in 2010" think industry momentum is slowly picking up.

    And embedded systems developers are generally happy in their jobs, despite the uncertainties, according to Jack Ganssle in "Engineering Salaries."

    Lisa Su of Freescale is optimistic about the future of connected devices in this improving market, but believes that things will be a lot better with an industry-wide set of standards for connected device interfaces. Another sign of optimism is Hewlett Packard's move into the sensor network market with a novel design.

    Of the many design articles published on Embedded.com this week, one I found particularly interesting is on 2D barcode decoding on a low footprint DSP. Other design article topics include home network design with GSM and Zigbee, new techniques for boundary scan/JTAG testing, ESD protection of discretes, flyback converter design and creating a digital filter.

    This week, Kendall follows up his previous column by passing his Filter Wizard hat over to you as he guides you through the mechanics of implementing a response-equalizing filter in digital, using the PSoC3. It’s very impressive, though I have to add the caveat that hopefully not all of you will go completely ‘digital’, relinquishing those high quality capacitors, just yet!
     
    What else have we for you this week? First up is a detailed discussion of the design challenges encountered when interleaving high speed ADCs, with some analog and digital solutions discussed. There’s also on interesting article on ESD protection, or lack of it, around discretes such as mosfets – it’s a good reminder of the risks of forgetting the basics.
     
    I particularly like the story of the HP engineer who invented an accelerometer as a side project, and the credit that the company has given him! In publishing, my name appears alongside the text I write (for good or bad!), and artists generally sign their work, yet relatively few engineers are credited for their ingenuity – good thing, bad thing?     Let's start with a quick item: nominations are now being accepted for the 2010 EETimes ACE (Annual Creativity in Electronics) awards; click on the link below and you'll get the information you need.

    And yes, you read it correctly: we posted a software article this week, on the important topic of software for dependable systems. Why have this article, despite our general avoidance of the software here? There are two main reasons.

    First, nearly all systems incorporate software, often needed to set up analog signal-chain parameters as well as accept/pass the data to/from analog components. And how many times, in debug phase or in the field, is a problem (aka bug) attributed to hardware at first thought, and it is reality software? (And the reverse is true as well.)

    [An aside: I once visited a major analog-IC vendor, and at a break they told me that they had seen a rash of BSOD (blue screen of death) crashes in some PCs they had recently installed. While their initial assumption was it was a Windows-related problem, they did some serious instrumenting and found out the real problem was noisy and out-of-regulation power rails in the "new-ish" PCs, due to substandard (likely counterfeit) bulk capacitors in the power supplies. So what looked like software bugs were really due to something at the very other end of the system design, namely, passive components.]

    Second, the techniques for improving software can also be applied to hardware and circuitry, in many cases. Issues of proper planning, design modularity, and review rigor are universal principles of good engineering.

    Another item of interest this week: Hewlett-Packard announced a new technique for building accelerometers, see news item linked below. With the withering and shrinking away of many vaunted and legendary corporate research labs (Bell Labs is the prime example), it's nice to know that some still exist and allow for "off the books" projects. (Ironically, the accelerometer comes from H-P's printer division, which until recently was the cash-cow darling at HP, but that has changed dramatically, see "H-P plans to fuse printer, PC units" in The Wall Street Journal.

    Due to the availability of low-cost MEMS-based accelerometers, we are seeing many clever applications for this function, such as disk-drive protection, game controllers, and more. Acceleration, like temperature, is a parameter of great interest, but it has always been tough to measure, especially at low cost.

    Bear with me for an anecdote: I have always been intrigued by gyros, accelerometers, and inertial measurement systems. Back in the day, I built a crude, gimbaled platform, using some better-quality school science-lab gyroscopes, plus some bearings I pulled from some tossed-away equipment. Then I read that you could use a gyroscope to make an accelerometer, called a PIGA (Pendulating Integrating Gyroscopic Accelerometer), so I made one of those. It seemed to work, and it was fun to build, but I had no way of really assessing its performance.

    From what I have read, a high-end PIGA is still the most accurate, widest-dynamic-range accelerometer design available, but at a very steep price. And if that is not good enough, read this explanation of the "ultimate" gyro, which performs beyond the PIGA but is impractical except for one-shot missions (it uses niobium-plated perfect quartz spheres and SQUID sensors), see "Spinning spheres test relativity's subtlety" and "The Gravity Probe B Bailout".

    So, what do we have this week, besides the software feature and the H-P news? We have an article which looks at the demands of medical ultrasound systems and how IC technology is playing into meeting them (think about those intricate probe and cable assembles!); and a look at ESD protection for discrete semiconductors. We also have an array of new products (including a MEMS gyro from STM), And, of course, there's some updates on how the semiconductor business is doing thus far in 2009, and some predictions for 2010 (although I don't put too much faith in these, they are still worth looking at, if only to use as a frame of reference for your own observations).

    "A Soyuz rocket blasted off from the plains of Kazakhstan Tuesday with the International Space Station's newest addition, a module doubling as a docking port for visiting spacecraft and an airlock for spacewalking astronauts.

    "The 168-foot-tall [51-m-tall] booster roared away from Launch Pad No. 1 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome at 1422 GMT (9:22 a.m. EST) Tuesday, or just after nightfall Tuesday night in Kazakhstan."

    "The three-stage rocket delivered its payload, the Poisk docking compartment, to a low-altitude injection orbit about nine minutes after liftoff.

    "Poisk, which means "search" or "explore" in Russian, is attached to the service module of a Russian Progress resupply ship, providing electrical power and propulsion for the spacecraft during its two-day journey to the space station.

    "The Progress will fire its engines twice later Tuesday to begin changing its orbit to chase down the complex in space.

    "More burns are on tap Wednesday and early Thursday before the ship begins its automated final approach to the outpost on a Kurs rendezvous radar system.

    "The automatic sequence should begin at 1320 GMT (8:20 a.m. EST) Thursday, leading to a docking with the Zvezda service module's space-facing, or zenith, port at 1543 GMT (10:43 a.m. EST).

    "The new module is the first major Russian addition to the complex since the nearly identical Pirs module was launched in 2001. Pirs is located on Zvezda's Earth-facing port, directly across from the future home of Poisk.

    "Poisk will give the station a fourth docking port on the Russian segment, allowing for longer stays of future Progress freighters and more opportunities for crew handovers using Soyuz spacecraft."

    "The compact egg-shaped Poisk module measures about 13 feet [4 m] long and 8 feet [2.4 m] in diameter at its widest point. Poisk weighs about 8,000 pounds [3,600 kg], according to NASA.

    "Future Russian spacewalks will use Poisk as an airlock. The module also carries electrical and data interfaces for experiments to be mounted to Poisk's exterior.

    "Poisk's internal volume measures about 500 cubic feet [14 cubic meters] and the module includes two egress hatches for spacewalking astronauts.

    "Also called Mini-Research Module 2, Poisk is carrying about 2,000 pounds [900 kg] of equipment inside its pressurized section, including Russian Orlan spacesuits and life support equipment, according to NASA.

    "The Progress space tug will be jettisoned from Poisk after it arrives at the station."

    Microsoft's Zune HD media player is "gadget chocolate," says roving editor Rick Merritt. While Microsoft's answer to the Apple's highest-end iPod is sleek, Merritt found "some pretty steep and frustrating hurdles in setting up and figuring out how to use the Microsoft device." In other words, Zune software developed by a so-called "software giant" isn't very good. Once our reviewer finished fiddling with all the set-up menus, he decided in the end that he likes the Zune. Those of us with less patience might conclude otherwise.

      That's Infotainment, Down in Detroit

    The proliferation of vehicle infotainment and other networked systems has gotten to the point where Ford is pitching it's F-150 truck as an office on wheels. Indeed, car makers we talk to are far more interested in discussing bells and whistles inside the car than they are talking about what's under the hood. Component makers have figured this out, and are offering a range of architectures designed to reduce the amount of time needed to develop new infotainment applications. One of the latest offerings from Renesas Technology is a case in point.

    Some good quarterly financial news from U.S. and other car makers for a change. Ford and General Motors reported profits in the third quarter, partly driven by strong sales stimulated by the U.S. "cash for clunkers" program. Toyota also reported surprise earnings. But Chrysler continues to lose money and market share.

    Sadly, the news is downright grim in the city built on auto manufacturing. A Google Map tour of Detroit reveals the devastation wrought by the decline in American car manufacturing.

      Editor's Note
    Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd. is, according to industry watchers and at least one customer, experiencing growing pains as it tries to wring out and ramp up its 40-nanometer process technology. Semiconductor editor Mark LaPedus reports that one indication of continuing problems at TSMC are comments by Nvidia Corp. about yield constraints. However, Altera Corp. CEO John Daane told LaPedus that yields for its FPGAs made with TSMC's 40-nm process are "good." So, it remains to be seen whether in fact TSMC has resolved earlier 40-nm yield issues as it has claimed.

    Losses continue as Tower celebrates growth
    Tower Semiconductor Ltd., a chip foundry that trades as TowerJazz, turned in a net loss on increased sales for the third quarter of 2009. The company forecast strong revenue growth in the fourth quarter but did not comment on profitability.
     
    MagnaChip confirms new owner
    As expected, South Korea's MagnaChip Semiconductor Ltd. said that its ''second amended plan of reorganization'' confirmed by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware on Sept. 25, will become effective on Nov. 9.

    SystemC synthesis subset draft standard released
    The Open SystemC Initiative (OSCI) has moved one step further. It has released a draft of SystemC synthesis subset standard, which is open for public review until Jan. 21, 2010.
