If you are looking to just drop sound, use QT Pro to clip out the
section you want to drop the sound in, and lower the volume in the
properties for the sound track.
If you want to ramp down sound — which is what I'm thinking you want to
do — the best way is to use an editor that will allow you to lower the
volume over time. If you need a free application, download Adobe
GoLive CS. This web editor has a very robust QuickTime editor built
into it. They have a 30-day demo on the web site — fully functional.
Another way to do it free is to use WireTap 1.0.0, free utility from
Ambrosia Software (
http://www.ambrosiasw.com/utilities/freebies/) for
OS X only. With it you can capture any sound being played on your
computer. Start the movie running, then turn down your system sound as
it plays. It will record the reduction in volume. It's also handy for
capturing audio from internet radio.
