I have just downloaded the package from FILES section and installed with no problem under
under linux (teTeX). Just make your latex system recognize the new package by running texhash
or mktexlsr. Oh and you also need nccfancyhdr package which not in standard latex package otherwise you can not compile the example. the nccfancyhdr can be downloaded from CTAN.

My problem is now in entering character as my keyboard is qwerty my default system language is english. I really do not know what encoding to use.

I can not learn from the example as well as the kile editor that I use already display everything in arabic characters. Whenever i try to change or delete the keyboard behave differently.
Your guidance for the correct input encoding will be greatly appreciated.

Compared to ArabTeX where you can just type in latin character, alqalam is not that easy.
Nevertheless, in my opinion alqalam is a great achievement and I wish to congratulate all of the developer and contributer for making such an extension to latex.

The team decision to license is under GPL is also an elegant decision.
Especially in views of some other arabic/foreign latex package which are kept as commercial package.

Please find attached the "final" version of the paper for EuroTeX. If you
have any comments please pass them to me as soon as possible. We should
submit it before 1 June.

I am now using the required style format with the new images that
Abdel-Nasser provided to me and I managed to get it down to five pages as
they requested. I had to limit the number of authors to just one as you
can see since the style typesets each author's name followed by his postal
address and email address. The names of seven people and their addresses
took almost three quarters of a column. Instead the names of the
contributing students appear now as a footnote in the first page.

On other issues, I am almost done with my official duties here in
Singapore. I should be able to focus a bit more on the work of the new
group of Abdel-Nasser in the coming two weeks in shaa ALLAH. If every
thing occurs as planned, I should be arriving to Egypt in shaa ALLAH on 17
June. That gives us enough time to work on this year's project before I
have to travel to deliver the presentation at EuroTeX.

As a question to all of you, is anyone willing to register for a masters
degree in the department and work on this project? If yes, then please ask
about the logistic details at the faculty so that you can register in time
for the coming academic year.

your comments. It is currently in six pages so we must shorten it to
fit the five pages requirement of the conference. Please advise me on
that. Those who are interested to edit it should let me know so
that I can send you the figures as well. I am just sending the pdf, tex,
and bib files for now in order not to overload your mailboxes.

Abdel-Nasser, you wanted to submit something to TUG2006 in Morocco. I
think that we can target that second paper to a detailed explanation of
the implementation. I tried to access the site of the conference but it
seems to be temporarily down. If I remember correctly, we should submit an
abstract before the first of May. Is this correct?

With the site being down, I think that they will just delay the
deadline. Regardless, we should still attempt to finish a nice abstract in
the coming day or two and start working on that second paper. A draft of
such an abstract is given below this message. Please let me know what you
think. If you prefer something completely different for the second paper
let me know as well.

I think that Zareef can help us in writing the second paper since he is
the most experienced with the code. In general, you should read at least
all the references that I used in the EuroTeX paper in order to get a good
feeling of the field and to understand how to write a paper yourself
similar to what those other people wrote.

For the group of Abdel-Nasser, please pay close attention to the last
part of the EuroTeX paper that discusses "future" work. Parts of those can
be in your own project this year if you want.

AlQalam: implementation details

AlQalam is a package of macros for \TeX\ derived from Arab\TeX\ to enable
the typesetting of the Qur'an and other traditional texts using the arabic
script. In this paper we attempt to give a detailed explanation of the
various routines we developed for AlQalam. We discuss the feedback gained
from the first group of users and the enhancements that are introduced to
address the issues raised.

In particular, we present the different classes of modifiers that can be
applied to the skeleton of any charater: dots, vowels, pausing marks, and
additional pronunciation marks (such as imala, ishmam, and sad with zay).
Our new extensions allow the user to put any mixture of those modifiers on
any character.

Arabic in general uses "wider" characters to fit the line width rather
than using extra spacing. Just open up in mushaf or a well written book to
see numerous examples of that.

Some techniques to do that exist. Please take a look at the file that I
have just uploaded to the group website (han-the-thanh-thesis.pdf). This
is the PhD thesis of the one who wrote the pdftex and pdflatex tools. He
speaks at length about what he calls "font expansion". In the latin script
such expansion of some letters does not yield great results. However, in
Arabic, this si the best way.

If I am not mistaken, Thomas Milo of decotype speaks about these issues in
his writtings and I guess that his system attempts to do that. However, I
need to read his articles in more details before really giving a correct
assessment of what he does. Read for yourself as well and let us all
share our findings.

In short, if we manage to do a decent job with Arabic, it will
definitely be something important and will be mentioned in the history
of Arabic typography. However, our goal should be to serve the book of
ALLAH and to improve the current situation of Arabic on computers not
just to get our name in history :)

In order for me to be able to help while still here and to get engaged in
the work once I arrive, please write all the details of what you have done
so far and send it to me. This should greatly help you as well to get a
good report for your project at the end. So, try to do a good job in this
summary so that you benefit from it later. Remember that you are working
with a typesetting engine, hence, your final project report should be of
superior quality. You will only attain that if you train yourself in
writing a lot.

So, today, you got two advices one from Zareef and one from me:
to read a lot and to write a lot. :)

we miss you leading the project
we really now without clear path
and in egypt we leave Dr Mohsen Rashwan
as he really interested in verification of quran data part
not in tex package so we feeled that he may not reward
our work

then we went to Dr Ameen Nassar as he mey be interested
in the project

but we work without clear aim so we need you to lead
the project , identify the future trends ,...

if we may be a pressure upon you then
never mind  about us we will work any way
as it is our graduation project and we must do our best

the idea that we miss the leader

our work untill now:
    1- we work in fourth modifier
    2- two of us working in fonts to enhance some characters
    3- one of us working in GUI as input module
    4- we working in geometry packge to resize the output page
    5- we working in fancy package for adding footnote and upper note
    6- we corrected many buges but not all

Dr Hossam you are the only one how can understand what we are doing
so if you have any comment , guidelines ,..

About the paper you will send to eurotex :
will we talk about arabtex or the modifications we made on it ?
and how much details we will explain about functions, treatment of tokens,..
or we will describe the package from macro veiw

and who much arabtex to Elqalam ratio in pages
these questions may guide us to complete the paper fastly

       to be orinted to typesetting the holy Quran in more depth

It sounds like a very good topic.  Could you write up an abstract?
Also, the organizers would like to receive a draft of the full paper by
June 30 for review, etc.  Will this be possible?
