Mike,
Bill Montgomery here. The 24th works for me. It will be my last opportunity to meet everyone. I leave the island on July 15th. I will think a little bit more about agenda, but right now I have nothing in particular I'd like to discuss. A speaker or video would be great!
We had a rare break in the clouds over here at Courtney last night, so I rushed down at about 10pm to do some viewing, but it took about 30 minutes for the mirror to warm up, and I got a bad case of dewing thanks to keeping my scope stored inside with the AC. I was finally in action sometime before 11, and I turned the scope on Jupiter just in time to watch the occultation of Io. The moon was just grazing the disk of the planet when I started watching. Perfect timing! Hey, has anybody in RAC successfully seen the "new" red spot yet? It is supposed to trail the Great Red Spot by about two hours, so last night it would have come into view around 1:45 or so, and it would have been visible for an hour or two before Jupiter set. Please let me know. I'm curious as to the smallest apperture that will catch it for nake eye viewing. I have a ten-inch, but my problem here at Courtney is really the light polution, and, of course, the perpetual cloudiness!
Hope to see you on the 24th. Will keep checking the web site.
Cheers
Bill sends

Subject: [RACAstronomy] Starting Up Meetings AgainHi folks,
First off, a few of you are not yet members of the Yahoo Group (John O.,
Gary H., Lisa and Geoff, Mike B. and Ed M.). I have included you in this
message via "BCC" (blind copy) so that you will have this initial message,
but you will miss all the replies posted back via the Group. If you would
like to stay informed, please take a few moments and join the Group:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/RACAstronomy/
I'll be standing by if you have problems joining.
Now, to the point. A small number of new folks have recently contacted me
with interest in attending meetings. If the interest is there (as indicated
by responses to this message), I would like start having meetings on the 4th
Saturday of every month at 7PM in the Lester Hospital Conference Room. The
4th Saturday works well with the Moon phase throughout this entire year. As
before, after the meeting, if the weather permits, we would travel somewhere
for some stargazing (Torii? other suggestions?).
So, I would like to hear back from those interested in having meetings. If
we start again this month, the 4th Saturday is 24 June. Also, what would
you like to see at the meetings? Specifically, what would you like to see
at THIS meeting? In the past we have either had a presentation from a
member or watched a video and then had a short discussion before heading out
for some viewing.
Now that we are basing our communications on this Yahoo Group, we should do
much better at brainstorming and coordination. Once you are on the Group,
every time a reply is sent to one of these messages, everyone in the Group
automatically receives it.
Best regards,
Mike
