Let's go ahead and cancel the meeting on 28 November and change the December
meeting from the 26th to the 12th. Robert - please update the meetings page
on the web site when you have time.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi,

Dec 12th works for me. December gets crazy with the holidays, etc but right
now I am good with the 12th.

BTW: If the clouds don't ruin it.... the Leonids Meteor shower should peak
on the 17th..... I think the prediction for peak is about 2100 GMT on 17th
which would be early in the morning on the 18th for us in Japan.

Our normally scheduled meetings for November and December would be the 28th
and 26th respectively. Since these are both big holiday weekends, I think
we should reschedule. How about a single meeting on December 12th?

If that doesn't work, please suggest alternatives or we'll end up just
skipping November and December altogether...

Also, in looking at the Moon phases through 2010, the second Saturday of
each month looks best for 2010 - thoughts?

Well, looks like the clouds just didn't want to cooperate. I've left a
voice mail with the school and told them we won't be setting up any scopes.

Hi gang,

This week got by me...I meant to send this out much earlier so unfortunately
some of you will be reading this after the fact.

Tomorrow night, Friday 30 October, is the night the Kadena Middle School
asked us to setup a scope or two to show the students a few objects. Kadena
Middle School is just inside Gate 5, over by the High School. We'll be
behind the school on the basketball courts; follow the drive around the left
side of the school. I'll be there at 5:30PM setting up my scope. If you
can bring a scope, binos or any other aids OR if you can just help corral
kids, that would be great. It should wrap up about 8PM.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi gang,

This coming Saturday is our monthly meeting. Hopefully the weather will be
as nice as it was last month - the new site on Kadena is nice for a relaxing
star gaze.

The Boy Scouts will not be coming this month. Any volunteers for a
presentation? Pegasus, Andromeda and Cassiopeia would be a nice topic :-)

Also on the agenda, I'd like to talk about the 30th at Kadena Middle School
and meetings for November and December (the 4th Saturday may not be ideal).

Hi Jack,

We do have an online store with gear with our logo. On our home page:
http://www.nexstarsite.com/_RAC/
look for the hat in the bottom right corner. If we have enough interest, we
could do something locally (which would be less expensive).

We're on for 5:30-8PM at Kadena Middle School if the weather cooperates.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi gang,

One of the teachers at Kadena Middle School sent us a message via our web
site asking if we could set up some scopes Friday, 30 October. We would
need to start setting up about 5:30PM and they expect their event (a school
costume dance) to wind down around 8PM. The idea is we would show them
bright interesting objects (Jupiter, the Moon and a few double stars should
suffice).

Who can attend?

Best regards,

Hi folks,

The Boy Scouts rescheduled for October, so things didn't go quite as
planned. Chris, Tommy and Mike S. viewed a NASA presentation on Exoplanets
which Robert found a few months ago. It seems that it should be available
here:
http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov <http://planetquest.jpl.nasa.gov>
though I haven't found it yet.

After that, we went to the new semi-dark site over behind Karing Kennels
near Kadena Gate 3. It takes about 15-20 minutes to travel there from
Lester hospital and it is fairly dark. An alcove surrounded by trees blocks
all local light (and unfortunately a significant amount of the sky). The
sky from about 60 degrees up is good to at least magnitude 5. Parking is
readily available, both for those bringing large scopes and for large groups
of visiting star gazers.

Last night the transparency and seeing were very good - Epsilon Lyra 1&2
showed two diffraction rings in Mike's 11" SCT. We took in Jupiter, the
first quarter Moon and a variety of deep sky objects to include clusters,
planetary nebulae, double stars and even a couple of galaxies.

In all, this looks like a good location within reasonable distance for star
gazing after our monthly club meetings. We'll have a map posted on our web
site before the next meeting.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi folks,

Well, I spent the better part of this afternoon looking for a semi-dark site
in the central part of the island. Nakagusuku castle itself would be great,
but it is locked up at night. There are some areas on the Pacific side of
that ridge that would be good too, but there are no landmarks to help people
find them, the roads are very narrow and a bit treacherous (in the dark),
there is no parking and the land there is certainly privately owned.

So, then I got to thinking about the end of the flight line on Kadena Air
Base, over on the Gate 3 side. Most of the surrounding areas are farms and
undeveloped land so it is fairly dark over there. I found a nice little
area that has promise. It is back behind Karing Kennels. I'll sketch a map
for tomorrow night and if the weather cooperates, we'll find out how dark it
is.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi gang,

First off - I'm sorry I haven't yet had time to write up an account of my
eclipse trip to Amami. Robert - please go ahead and post those which you
already have.

This coming Saturday, August 22nd, we will hold our monthly meeting at 7PM
in the conference room at the Lester Navy Hospital. The weather has been
good lately so I'm hoping we will all have a chance to go out and observe
together.

For the meeting itself, would someone like to volunteer to put together a
presentation? Any topic is fine - another presentation on a prominent
constellation would be great. This time of year Scorpius and Sagittarius
are begging for our attention. Also, suggestions on presentations are
welcome if you don't want to make a presentation yourself.

Best regards,
Mike

Mike - great report! Robert - would you add it to the web site with the
author as "Mike B".

I thought Okinawa would get darker skies as well. I forgot to figure in
three things. It is the dead of summer, we are at a low latitude and
maximum coverage was very close to noon. So the Sun was high in the sky
providing very direct rays with little atmospheric scatter.

Regarding the pinhole viewer - maybe a good present to a school? With that
length, larger sunspots will be visible. If the Sun ever produces them
again... :-)

I was in Naha all day (really, ALL day) and will be busy tomorrow night.
Looks like Tuesday is the earliest I'll complete my report.

Best regards,
Mike

My Eclipse Report begins 2 months ago when I tried to get airline tickets to
Amami Oshima so I could see a 100% view of the eclipse. But after being on
a waiting list for 2 months and then failing to get either airline tickets
or ferry tickets, I decided to enjoy the 95% partial eclipse from the
balcony of my 8th floor apartment in Chatan. It turned out to be a lot of
fun because I was able to share the experience with my nephew.

The weather was slightly cloudy, but not too bad. There were bands of thick
clouds, but frequent patches of clear sky.

I was prepared with my pinhole viewer, solar filter viewer, my Skyscout to
locate stars in the daylight sky, my laptop computer (to watch the eclipse
live on the internet), and was even within a view steps of my TV where NHK
would show the eclipse.

My wife's job was to make the pinhole viewer. I told her that the image
would be about 1/100th the length of the cardboard box, so she created this
monster viewer that was 10 feet long! And it worked great (once we were
able to get it out the door!) All through the eclipse we had a perfect
image of the eclipse with the pinhole viewer. It worked so well, I hate to
junk it. Maybe I can sell it on eBay :)

The solar filter glasses also worked good, and although there were clouds,
the eclipse was easily visible through the light clouds with the solar
filter.

Prior to the eclipse, I tracked the moon with my Skyscout, which I thought
was cool (since I normally can't use it during the day. I actually had to
put cardboard across the front when the moon came close to the sun. I also
verifed the location in the daytime sky of Venus and the stars of Orion;
although it never got dark enough for me to see them (also due to the
clouds).

The laptop proved useless.... all web sites showing the eclipse were too
congested. I couldn't even get into the NASA site, and I have high speed
internet. The TV however was good. It was nice to see how other parts of
the world were viewing the eclipse; unfortunately it rained in China and was
cloudy in much of the Ryukyu islands.

My biggest surprise was that it didn't get darker. I thought with 95%
cover, the sky would be dark. Even without the clouds, I don't think I
could have seen any stars (maybe Venus).

Overall, it was a memorable experience and a chance to share my hobby of
astronomy with my nephew.

~Mike B~

My Eclipse Report begins 2 months ago when I tried to get airline tickets to
Amami Oshima so I could see a 100% view of the eclipse. But after being on a
waiting list for 2 months and then failing to get either airline tickets or
ferry tickets, I decided to enjoy the 95% partial eclipse from the balcony of my
8th floor apartment in Chatan. It turned out to be a lot of fun because I was
able to share the experience with my nephew.

The weather was slightly cloudy, but not too bad. There were bands of thick
clouds, but frequent patches of clear sky.

I was prepared with my pinhole viewer, solar filter viewer, my Skyscout to
locate stars in the daylight sky, my laptop computer (to watch the eclipse live
on the internet), and was even within a view steps of my TV where NHK would show
the eclipse.

My wife's job was to make the pinhole viewer. I told her that the image would
be about 1/100th the length of the cardboard box, so she created this monster
viewer that was 10 feet long! And it worked great (once we were able to get it
out the door!) All through the eclipse we had a perfect image of the eclipse
with the pinhole viewer. It worked so well, I hate to junk it. Maybe I can
sell it on eBay :)

The solar filter glasses also worked good, and although there were clouds, the
eclipse was easily visible through the light clouds with the solar filter.

Prior to the eclipse, I tracked the moon with my Skyscout, which I thought was
cool (since I normally can't use it during the day. I actually had to put
cardboard across the front when the moon came close to the sun. I also verifed
the location in the daytime sky of Venus and the stars of Orion; although it
never got dark enough for me to see them (also due to the clouds).

The laptop proved useless.... all web sites showing the eclipse were too
congested. I couldn't even get into the NASA site, and I have high speed
internet. The TV however was good. It was nice to see how other parts of the
world were viewing the eclipse; unfortunately it rained in China and was cloudy
in much of the Ryukyu islands.

My biggest surprise was that it didn't get darker. I thought with 95% cover,
the sky would be dark. Even without the clouds, I don't think I could have seen
any stars (maybe Venus).

Overall, it was a memorable experience and a chance to share my hobby of
astronomy with my nephew.

I went to the Megastar Planitarium in Tomigusuku today. It was pretty cool and
I recommend it to all. It is located in the Tomitan Mall just off Hwy 331,
south of the Naha airport.

Of course it is all in Japanese language, but the display of the stars is
wonderful. There are two different shows; each 1000yen. Here is a link:

http://www.okinawa-information.com/blog/megastar-ii-back-okinawa

The Megastar planitarium will be on Okinawa for only a month.

I'm trying desperately to complete my report this weekend :-) For those
wondering "did Mike get to witness a full eclipse in all its glory?" - not
really, the clouds got the better of us.

Hi Chris,

Sorry, no serious astronomy equipment vendors on the island. Do you need
assistance finding something online?

Hi folks,

Robert has written minutes for the 27 June meeting with the Cub Scouts.
They are posted at the web site:
http://www.nexstarsite.com/_RAC/minutes.html

Sorry for the delay in getting this on the web site - entirely my fault,
Robert was timely in producing them but I didn't respond back to him for
posting until last night.

Thanks Robert!

Reminder - NO MEETING this month. Our next meeting will be 22 August.

Best regards,
Mike

Hi,

The last time I spoke with them, AFN had not decided for certain, but the
eclipse story should air on the 6PM news on either 20 or 21 July. I'm not
too sure how it will turn out, the young Marine producing the story rushed
through it. But, the important thing I was trying to get across was safety
and for people to refer to the web page for details:
http://www.NexStarSite.com/eclipse

I believe the OkiMar will run a story in today's edition as well.

Best regards,
Mike

Several of you expressed interest in information about the July 22nd solar
eclipse. I've put together a page of information and links:

Tuesday I'll be at the AFN studio on Plaza Housing working on a story for
the local TV news. They expect to air it during their regular news program
on either the 20th or the 21st - I'll let you know when they decide :-)

Best regards,
Mike

Hi folks,

I've put together a quick page of info on solar eclipses and the upcoming
July 22nd eclipse:
http://www.NexStarSite.com/eclipse

After the actual eclipse, let's all write-up a short paragraph or two (more
if you'd like) about your own observations/experiences on the 22nd and I'll
update that section of the page to include our write-ups. Then we can make
this page a permanent part of our RAC web site.
