Good catch Janet.
It's important to change the channel's timestamps when items change.
It's also a good idea NOT to bother changing the channel or the item
timestamps when they HAVEN'T changed. I've seen more than a few feeds that
use the time the feed was generated instead of one related to the items.
This makes for needless wasted effort as the client downloads it again and
checks the items only to find nothing's new.
This also touches on the issue of using good timestamps in the HTTP headers.
If you use proper timestamps and eTags you make it possible for an
intelligent client to avoid downloading entirely if nothing's changed. A
client can make an http HEAD request with the last date and eTag it has and
if the server's got nothing new then nothing will get downloaded. The only
network traffic is for that simple check. Works wonders for sites that have
a lot of subscribers, or even ones that just want to avoid wasting what
bandwidth they've got.
