Thanks to member "p85014" I was able to track down the following
information.
The old discontinued in the USA "Radio YourWay LX" was called the
TalkMaster II or TalkMaster 2 by its manufacturer and appears t still
be available for sale
The new CC Witness is actually called a "TalkMaster Slim BT" and in
Japan is available in White Red Silver Black(CC Witness) and 2 pastel
colours Light Pink and a Light Blue
go to www.suntac.jp/shopping and you can order either the Talkmaster
Slim (CCrane Witness) for $368 or the Talkmaster II (Radio your Way)
for $212. Their page says "free shipping" but that is probably
for Japan shipments only. I don't know if the software allows
switching to English. On my Pogo I can go to Languages on the menu,
and check Japanese, but it still displays in English.
They also have a remote for the Slim model....so you can operate it
without removing it from your pocket, backpack or purse. This
attaches to the slot in the bottom. So I doubt very much if that
slot is for any iPod attachments. The Talkmaster II had a cradle
that used contacts in the bottom.
Note that the TM Slim allows you to split files.....maybe this will
allow you to delete a portion after you have split the file.
Apparently, this model is very popular in Japan to learn English, as
they offer memory cards with English lessons installed.

I just found you guys while looking for a good MP3 recorder. I have a
few items to share.
1. The Korean source of the C.Crane Witness
2. Does the C.Crane Witness have plug-in power for external mics?
3. The DDR-5000 recorder
1. I don't know if this has already been posted, but I'm pretty that
the Diasonic 4300 is the Korean source for the C.Crane Witness and the
Japanese Suntac Talkmaster Slim. Check out: http://www.diasonic.com/english_re/product/ddr4100.php
I sent this message to Diasonic: "Pardon the small customer inquiry,
but the DDR-4300 has attracted my attention. Could you provide me with
information on any American retailer that sells the DDR-4300?
Maybe someone is selling the model on EBay under some re-branded model
name?" I'll let you know if I get a response.
2. I sent this question to C.Crane: "Does the CCrane Witness have
microphone plug-in power? I see that your 'Voz Stereo Microphone' is
coming soon, but will that need a battery powered pre-amp or can you
just plug it in to the Witness?" Does anybody on this list that
already has a Witness know the answer to this question?

CC Crane has a 08-12-08 note on the
Witness site talking about a "new
feature" one touch recording "coming
soon" Not sure if this means a
firmware upgrade, and still unclear
where one would go for this.
It would appear that any small plug
in MIC would suffice for recording
on the Witness.
As for the LS-10, I am one of the
reviewers on O'Reilly and elsewhere,
and the Olympus is now one of the top
3 small portable solid state recorders,
with the Marantz 620 and SONY PCM-D50.
Just an update on some of my search about the CCrane Witness.
1. I haven't heard back from Diasonic yet. Maybe that confirms they
collaborated with CCrane to produce the Witness and CCrane has
exclusive English distribution of the Diasonic 4300.
2. I got a message back from CCrane about microphone plug-in power on
the Witness. A not-so-helpful and not-so-technical response:

can find the answers.? If you were looking for more technical info, call the

I believe that the CC Witness is a Crane exclusive, just like the CCRecorder,
the VersaCorder, and the CCRadio -- it was designed by Crane engineers.? I'm
sure they researched all the other mp3 recorders on the market, but I don't
think they used them as models.? I think they took the best features and added
some of their own.? Anytime Crane precedes an item with "CC", it is generally a
Crane designed product.
Many of their products are made in South Africa.

Both the Witness and Talkmaster Slim are made by a Korean Firm (whise
name can be found in this forum) and the model goes by a confusing
name which is very similar to some types of PC memory

Right. I already reported C. Crane's answer in this group's Message 6606:
"Thank you for taking the time to contact our company. The CC Witness
is built from the ground up from design to firmware as an all new
experience for radio enthusiasts. It does have many functions that
people enjoyed on the Radio YourWay LX but it is not built from that
software."

I don't mean to be rude, but the Witness is most definitely not built
from the ground up. I'd bet the farm that it's made by the same
company that made the LX. The only way that's not the case is if the
designer of the LX sold the software/firmware and its rights to
whoever is building the Witness. Either that or someone downright
copied the LX functionality.
The software is so similar it's scary. Sure there are some new
features and the menus system is designed differently, but anyone who
has used the LX will immediately notice the many identical features,
functions, icons (compare the volume icon for a starter), etc.
I just hope they changed the mechanical design of the keypad (i.e. I
hope it will last for more than 1-2 years)!
Regards,
Charles

My *guess* is that the Witness was designed *for* CCrane. I can't
imagine that CCrane has such a large staff of hardware and software
engineers that they can design radios, firmware, flashlights, ...
There are design companies (e.g. http://idt.com/?id=5&source=aboutidt_menu ), semiconductor fab
companies, plastic molding companies, assembly companies, ...
I think that CCrane contracts with some group of the above - giving
them specs drawn up by Crane engineers - and then sells the resulting
product.
Perhaps the design of the Witness was done by a design company which
did the LX or one of the similar items.
When I say "design", I mean that Crane specifies pretty much exactly what it
wants?-- the features it must have and what other products it wants it to be
compatible with, perhaps even down to the layout of the buttons and switches.?
Crane does get very much involved in many of its products.? The CCRadio, for
example is not a knockoff.
Crane's Twin Coil Ferrite Antenna was designed and the prototype built by Crane
-- or more specifically by Chris Justice who worked for Bob Crane at?one time.?
In fact, until Justice left, it was called the Justice antenna.
Anyway, to what extent Crane was involved in the Witness, I do not know -- but
based on what I've seen in other CC products, I'd say it was more involved than
one might think.

I don't think we have any disagreement then. We were using "design"
in somewhat different ways. I was emphasizing such things as the
integrated circuit chip design - which is really specialized (I have a
close relative who does that type of work.)

This is something which is possible for a person with a small lab to
do. I'll stick my neck out and say that chip design falls into a
different category.

I'll give Crane full credit for the design you describe. I'm a long
time CCrane customer and have been very pleased.

Yes, I think we agree then ... no, I don't believe they actually design the chip
either.? Also, I was told once by phone rep. that they actually do their own
repairs (i.e. they employ repair people) -- they don't ususally send things out
to a 3rd party shop.? And from their flat rate repair prices, I believe it
because authorized dealers usually charge a lot more.
They have a few faults, but all-in-all, Crane is really a first class operation.

Please tell me about the Olympus and give me a link. Thanks.
s for the LS-10, I am one of the
reviewers on O'Reilly and elsewhere,
and the Olympus is now one of the top
3 small portable solid state recorders,
with the Marantz 620 and SONY PCM-D50.
