Another Innovation.......The Thermal Attic Refrigerator   Message List

In keeping with Thermal Attic Cooling, and my Passive Annual
Refrigerator System (which kicked off RefrigeratorAlernatives
The Thermal Attic Refrigerator, is for people in cool climates,
who either heat with Sunshine or wood (or to a lesser extent,
natural gas), and want to reduce their electrical usage. Or, for
those who live off-grid and really have to reduce it. It can also
work for anyone, if the refrigerator box is super-insulated, but
that can get more expensive than it is worth. The Thermal Attic
will function in the same way that Thermal Attics function in any
other usage, which is to store either heat, or a lack of heat, in a
thermal mass of small containers, above the conditioned space,
which in this case is a refrigerator box.

What this allows, is for the lowest temperatures of the night,
to freeze the water (or brine) in a quantity that will carry the
cooling effect through one, or multiple days. This will extend
the season that a smaller, in kitchen, vented refrigerator can
function, in its vented mode. For instance, in a climate, like
Topeka Kansas, which experiences average afternoon highs
that are well above freezing, every month of the year. But,
it also gets average nighttime lows that are below freezing,
for about a third of the year. A well designed Thermal
Attic refrigerator can optimally take advantage of those
colder temperatures, without exposure to the warmer.
In colder climates, the season can be much longer, and
the Thermal Attic can be vented with very cold air (for
brine) while the refrigerator box, can be thermostatically
vented.
